As an American Desi person, I think a lot of us who grew up with desi parents recognize the British English since that’s how our parents be referring to things whenever they speak English lol ( most likely because of British colonization) Ex.) Petrol= Gas Rubber= Eraser Chips= Fries Biscuit= Cookies Mobile= Cellphone Pavement= Sidewalk Indicator= turn signal Lift= Elevator And probably a lot more

This reminds me of when I had a British person come through my line and ask me about the rewards program at our store. When I replied with "it's for gas rewards" he tried to correct me to petrol, and I'm just like, you're in the US right now, it's gas here.

That was such a good accent! You only lost it on a couple things. • No one in any state of the U.S. says fuel, they all say gas. I mean, they know what fuel is, but they rarely say it. And true, most don't know what petrol is. • "Y'all" isn't really a NY thing. "You guys" is more NY. (But "y'all" has spread like wildfire, so in fairness, they are saying "y'all" in NY now adays, too.) Anyway, well done! That was funny!

So why do Americans call this ancient rock-oil ‘gasoline’? Petroleum as a word was around in Europe back when the North American mainland was being filled with enthusiastic European settlers and so it’s likely those first English-speakers were aware of the term, but it’s only when this ‘rock oil’ was started to be split into different compounds did the term ‘gasoline’ come about. In a lot of organic chemistry, -ene or -ine is used (think benzene/benzine), and so the part of the petroleum distilled-off and used in motor vehicles was the part of highest volatility, and in time was dubbed gasoline. Until recently it was thought the ‘gas’ part of it was due to it’s nature of being quite gas-like, however, it may have actually come from a brand name of Cazeline (a product sold and imported into the UK by a Mr John Cassell, and so named after him - Cassel + ine), which, when made by others who were not allowed to use the brand name, began being sold as Gazeline - or, in time, ‘gasoline’
