When an NBA player's shoe falls off, chaos reigns

There’s no rule in the NBA to address what happens when a player’s shoe falls off mid-game. So when one does, it’s a free for all. You can chuck your opponent's shoe into the stands, you can just pick it up and carry it around, you can kick it at the ref’s head... well you might get a tech for that last one, but you could argue it afterward.
Boogie Cousins once got a tech for merely throwing a rogue shoe off the court, but it was later rescinded. It’s Air Bud law, If there’s no rule that says you can’t, you can!
Directed and edited by Will Buikema

Imagine if there was a stoppage of play if you lost a shoe. All of a sudden guys would be losing shoes all the time "on accident" in the last 2 minutes. Or somebody goes on a breakaway so instead of running him down you just take off a shoe to force a whistle

I think the obvious next evolutionary step for basketball to take is to incorporate losing a shoe into the game more proactively. Maybe make it not a foul to remove a shoe from an opponent if they are not on their feet. Then any time someone flops, their shoes are up for grabs and a secondary keep away game ensues. Game within a game.

Talk about exploits. There was a rule in a Seattle, WA co-ed soccer league that made it illegal to kick the ball from behind and in-between a player's legs. So one season I constantly dribbled the ball into the 18 yard box, turned around with the ball in front of me and spread my legs - ball clearly visible from behind. The result of doing this got me a good dozen goals that season on top of the other ones that I scored - easily placing me first in the league of scorers. If you are in such a league in your city/state - I highly recommend this exploit. It's great to rack up points but the joy from doing it is beyond measure!

Hey, I have an idea for an MLB Rule Loophole video. In a recent game, Chicago White Sox vs Milwaukee Brewers, the bases were loaded for the White Sox and a runner was attempting to go home, wasn’t tagged, and was called safe at home. Although, upon further inspection, it became clear that the runner had missed home plate and should’ve been called out. But the Brewers manager didn’t challenge the play because he didn’t have enough information to challenge. So what does he do? He calls timeout to make a mound visit, where basically him, the pitcher and catcher, and the whole infield meet around the mound and talk about whatever they’re talking about. Now, there’s a rule that you can have no more than 20 seconds after the end of a play to challenge a call, and at this point it was over, so the Brewers manager used a pretty clever loophole. He had the players appeal the play, where they basically just threw the ball to home plate and tagged it in hopes of calling the runner out by the umpires after the play, and when the runner was called safe again, he then challenged the appeal, which ultimately had the same effect as challenging the play. This clever trick worked in his favor and the runner was called out, end of story.

I'm reminded of the Roller Derby rule in WFTDA ruleset about what happens if the jammer loses their helmet cover. If anybody touches the helmet cover other than the jammer or pivot, they're given a penalty. So when the cloth cover falls into the middle of the track where everyone is skating, only two players are allowed to move it out of the way. And even then, there are rules about what they can and can't do with it. It's not unheard of for the jammer to zip through, lose their helmet cover, and the pivot decides to helpfully get it off the track for when the jammer comes back around by throwing it into the referee lane. Because y'know, if referees trip over the cover that's not their problem.
