My reaction to the Arthur episode about bullying when he continues to bully Sue Ellen even after she asks him to stop as her "friend". Let me know what you think about this type of bullying and if you can relate. Please don't forget to comment, like and subscribe. Thank You!!!

I appreciate when writers make the protagonist “the villain” of the episode because it forces the audience, who already relate to the protagonist, to reflect on their own actions and how we treat people.

Yeah but he already had that lesson of “people’s feelings can get hurt”way back in Season 2, twice. Picking him again years later to play bully again(this time more wild) just seems too much. I know Arthur got flanderized but that doesn’t mean they should write him so abysmally. It’s like he’s a completely different character now.

I actually think this episode’s premise was quite good. It was intended to show that some people can become bullies without realizing it. They may have been just joking around, but then took the jokes too far. It’s just another case of unintentional bullying, and I actually thought the episode hit most of the right plot points for it to work. But the problem with using Arthur is that he has already been bullied for very similar reasons in the very first episode of the show (his glasses in “Arthur’s Eyes”), therefore he should already know how Sue Ellen feels about her sweater. That’s why he was the wrong character to convey this message.

@@martingargaro4855Honestly I feel like Arthur from the 1-15 season is different from the Arthur 16-25. The old Arthur was compassionate but flawed, lost his temper, relatable, etc. The new Arthur just is mean-spirited for no reason like it's a different show. And there's also Sue Ellen. In the older episodes, she would have never actually fought Arthur but been far more forceful. I feel like shows like WordGirl grew up and developed when shows like Arthur became too childish.

I haven’t seen this episode, but it’s interesting to see how subtle bullying can be. I’ve seen things like this happen in real life. And, usually the victim is gaslit into being told they’re being too sensitive. Now, I see that bullying doesn’t have to be extremely malicious or aggressive to still be considered bullying. But of course we all agreed when one of us said "stop" [with the jokes], we all stop and focus on other topics like video games or stuff we've seen on tv. Because we all know that there's a limit to poking fun of something to the point it becomes bullying and/or harassment.

Omg this episode was so weird to me as a kid, I remember hating it. Now as an adult, I do sort of like the idea of a normally nice character unknowingly becoming a bully who takes their teasing too far and has to learn a lesson and realize bullying isn't just beating someone up or stealing their lunch money. I really like how this episode shows the escalation; I just don't get why Arthur (one of the more mellow characters who's usually the one getting picked on and has been hinted to have a crush on Sue Ellen) seems to become a completely different person to teach the episode's lesson. Sue Ellen herself was super out of character: she's very outspoken, headstrong, can kick butt, and is ready to confront bullies at the drop of a hat. I think this plot line would have made way more sense with other characters, like Francine or Buster pushing the jokes/teasing too far towards someone like Fern or George who are established to be shy, self conscious, and nonconfrontational.

i kind of like how sue ellen was a bit more vulnerable in this ep. it shows that while she is head strong she also has a softer side that few know about. a lot of head strong people get lumped together as ¨the groups of people who never seem to get upset and are always happy¨. the episode shows that she is just very good about hiding her insecurities.

I think the SpongeBob episode ripped pants did this premise of over telling a joke way better because in that episode, SpongeBob himself ripped his own pants and felt embarrassed by it. But when he saw people like Sandy and scooter talked about it like he was making a joke, SpongeBob continued making ripped pants jokes to the point where everyone got annoyed and took it too far by pretending to drown (which led to a famous SpongeBob meme). This caused everyone to just ignore him and he realizes his mistake. So, along with several other beach goers, makes a song about what he learned, gaining back the respect of everyone in the process.

That is SO true! I've had some "friends" who were bullies to me. I used to make WAY too many excuses for people. It sucks because if you hear something repeated enough times, you start to believe it. I thought I was stupid and weak because of what ex-friends and ex-boyfriends said to me. It hurts more when it comes from someone you care about. But you're right! Keep your head on a swivel. Some people's cruelty are in it for the long con. Playing nice until they feel you have a strong enough connection to them and then they let loose. The best thing you can do is block those kinda people across all platforms and find people who actually care.

I find it good that Arthur and Sue Ellen were chosen for this episode. Arthur is the constant victim who should know about it. But, when he does it, he can’t see it because it’s not something he would normally do. And he’s doing it to a friend, so of course he still can’t see it until Sue Ellen finally is pushed too far in feeling hurt. And Sue Ellen normally stands up against the bullies. Which is why it works for her because she was still standing up for herself, but her usually kind friend was being a jerk. When it’s someone who is usually nice to you doing that to you, it hurts all the more. Going with Francine or Muffy as the bully and Fern or Jenna as the victim is too easy because they’re already established as mean girls and shy girls. That’s why it wouldn’t work with them being the subjects of the episode, it’s too expected for the mean girls to upset the shy girls. This was an episode about a joke going too far it becomes bullying and someone not recognising that even they can be at fault of such behaviour. Using the least likely kid is why it works for that very reason. Arthur probably didn’t even mean his remark as a joke either but as more like “hey, that looks really fluffy on you” but then with the others laughing and Sue Ellen taking it as a joke, it accidentally triggered something. As for Sue Ellen, we know she’s a tough girl who can stand up for herself. But that’s against the established mean kids. So, what do you do or feel when it’s one of your least likely to be a bully friends being the one bullying you? Of course it’s a shock, of course it’s hurtful and of course it’s harder to handle. If it had been Fern or Jenna on the receiving end, it wouldn’t have the same impact of “even tough kids can be hurt when it’s their friends doing the teasing”.

These two are the most notorious bullies in their friend and peer group. Two immediate instances that comes to mind is the episode when Francine was being an absolute witch to Fern for no reason and then got all sad when the tables turned on her and everyone was making mean caricatures & comics about her. The other is the germaphobe episode where they pressure Arthur into telling Buster how gross he is & then later getting mad at ARTHUR for making Buster a clean freak 🙄🙄🙄

Since we're on this topic, can we discuss the episode called Draw, where Francine was rude to Fern so she and the others started drawing pictures about Francine? While I agree with the ending message of treat others how you want to be treated, I dont like how it's never pointed out to Francine how SHE treats others, which is WHY the other kids had no problem having a laugh at her expense. It doesnt seem like she actually learned the lesson. Yea while she admit she shouldnt have been nasty to Fern, she still wonders why the others "have to be so mean". Girl, you are the meanest one 80% of the time! You cant dish it out all the time and then cry when you get it back. That's wild to me. There's actually an episode of Franklin that has a similar plot to the Arthur bullying episode. Its called Franklin's nickname. The kids come up with nicknames for each other and Bear is bothered by the one they give him.

My boss is a bully, a bad enough one that we've had people leave specifically because of her. She starts rumours, spreads them, gets people to start disliking that person... I work nights so I only ever see her in passing, but she likes to make comments to me about how I "don't have much of a personality" or that I "always sound so serious and harsh, guests don't think you care about what they're saying". Which is actually way more hurtful than the direct bullying I got in middle and high school about being overweight and having frizzy hair. Luckily though, like I said, I don't interact with her often enough for it to really get to me. It helps that the people I do see more often think she's nuts for saying those things.

Friendly reminder that the only bad thing that Sue Ellen did was in the Desk War episode, where she threw Binky’s rubber ball out the window, though I don’t think that’s fair because that was out of retaliation. She’s one of those characters that’s not mean unless you provoke them. Any other times she’s hanging with Fern, George, and Alex (one of the background characters that was always there didn’t speak until the back to school episode). My point is, Sue Ellen hardly ever does anything wrong that hurts anybody else. She’s not a Mary Sue perfect character by any means, but she’s not a complete jerk like Muffy or Francine, or even the Tough Customers before a certain point.

Arthur was the character that they shouldn’t use to be portrayed as a bully due to him experiencing it so he should know how it felt like. If they picked someone who is like muffy or Francine characters who tend to be mean it be more fitting. Also I’m also a bit confuse on why sue ellen was picked because she’s like one of the toughest kids at school and even binky doesn’t want to mess with her lol it was a very badly executed episode.

That’s probably why they went with those two. Arthur didn’t see his behaviour as bullying because he’s usually not the bully, and Sue Ellen is being able to show her vulnerable side because her usually kind friend is suddenly treating her like a joke because of something she’s wearing. Whereas if it was Francine, it would immediately be seen as bullying because of how she has a history of it, and using a shy character like Fern just feels too easy. It would be one of those episodes that just feels overdone if going with the obvious.

ESPECIALLY since children's TV has an extra important role in what they convey to children, and specifying when something is wrong / not okay.

So this show I recently rewatched the entire series on Amazon 😂. Something I noticed in the newer seasons is that Arthur loses his edge. It’s kind of like they babied him up and made him more agreeable. That snippy side of his personality is pretty much nonexistent in the later seasons. I watched Arthur all through school but the show I watched until I graduated high school was Word Girl (that’s a great show I watched it again as a 26 year old woman and I laughed my but off) you’re right people don’t give some kids show enough credit. Sometimes the humor or the writing or subject matter is so well written you’re like, this is a kids show?? Arthur, Word Girl, and Martha Speaks were my go to shows as a kid.

As someone who had the ""friends"" from elementary school throughout high school, who btw completely dropped me two weeks before graduation, and me being the autistic person that I am who honestly didn't understand at the time that they were being mean to me.. it sucks. Especially when it only all comes together as one big picture after the fact. Protect your hearts loves, bc as he said, even the people you love the most can hurt you.

What sucks is that the ones going too far with jokes and overly telling them and bringing them up are often family members and these family members expect you to tolerate it accept the fact they're never going to let it go because they're family. They often are completely oblivious to the fact they're being bullies and engaging in toxic behaviors and fail to compute it even when told. Fortunately not all families are like this, but this type of bullying most commonly takes place in the home. Often it's parents. And it hurts more coming from family than anyone else.

Me personally I think this is one of the worst, more than Arthur's Big Hit. Mostly because they chose Arthur, who ABSOLUTELY would know when to stop, to be an accident bully. I feel like Buster would fit more since he's an actual jokester
@pinkdiamond1847
@pinkdiamond1847 5 ай бұрын
Exactly. I get that the message is supposed to be that anyone can become a bully if they're not careful but the thing is Buster is usually a good kid but he is the kind who would take a joke too far without realising until it's too late whereas Arthur is usually sensible and would know when to stop.

when this episode first aired I was pretty shocked how arthur was the bully,like WTF,it just felt out of place,out of character for him,I can't remember if this ever happened to me,cause the main person that bullied me has bullied me since 1st grade,yes he was in all of my classes and went to all of my schools since the day we graduated,and that asshole finally went to jail a year later after he graduated,but I can't remember if any of my friends has made hurtful jokes,cause I had a friend that would always protect me before she moved away

I went through something similar, like Sue Ellen, back in 8th grade with a group of girls. The main girl whl started the bullying, wasn't my friend at all. She had a reputation of being mean and harassed ppl. If she did not like u, then she wouldn't make it and would make it her goal to make u feel bad about yourself. I saw her fatshame ppl she didn't like at every opportunity she got. She would make fun of my friend for being an overachiever. Trip ppl in the hallway and make fun of ppl appearance. In 8th grade she was in my homeroom. She always left me alone in the classes we had in the past since there were ppl she hated more than me. However, in 8th grade homeroom, I was number one in her hit list. At first, it wasn't so bad she would make fun on how I talk. It started to get bad when she saw me and said gross and told ppl I was so ugly that I would be an unknown creature to science. She will touch and pull my hair even after I told her to stop and will laugh at me when I did. What made it worse is ppl who I thought were my friends were amused by this and even joined in expect for one. She found it funny at first but when it continued after I told her to stop that when she found it unfunny and felt bad when it happened. However, my other "friends" still find it funny and gave her ideas on how to bully me. Like stick pens in my hair. Try to break my glasses. They invited me to a fake halloween party. What finally got me to tell a teacher was when they started to draw on my back. Nothing was really done other than just that one of them had to talk to the principal, and I was my seat my change. However, they still want me to sit with them. When I told them no, they asked why. When I told them that Im tired of being bullied, they told me that isn't bullying they just like to mess with me. Messing with someone and bullying are two different things. The main bully got hit by car and sadly died a year later. When she died, it was very mixed feelings. Many ppl who she bullied had very unkind things to say about her when she died. Some of her friends understand the rude remarkes. Other ppl didn't feel comfortable writing her letters when the teacher ask to write on how u rmr her by.

@@tranatkikomi6873 but that’s the point, this isn’t Arthur’s style of humor. He would make more subtle jabs or witty retorts. These over the top jokes aren’t the kind he makes. If the jokes were more subtle than it would make sense how Arthur doesn’t see what he’s doing. It’s so over the top, everyone can see it but him. It feels like a complete character departure and not a natural progression.

Anyone remember when Arthur became obsessed with the Love Ducks and Francine lead the charge against Arthur. Yet, all of the kids were low key obsessed with the show too? This cartoon has a tendency to engage in moral inconsistency. Like, when D.W destroyed Arthur’s Bell X-1 model. He got punished, but, nothing happened to her? Same with the kids who roasted Arthur but they were only hiding they’re own insecurities.

I was gonna say that this episode made it seem like Arthur deserved to have his toy model plane broken. But I get the message. When I was in middle school, there was this Vietnamese kid who I would bully. It started off as small harmless jokes, but it eventually went too far to the point where I became the one thing I promised to never become. He eventually called me out and I had a talk with a teacher about what I did and I never bullied him again.
