Played rhythm/lead guitar in a band for years. Then we lost our bass player and couldn’t find another. So I volunteered. It took me almost a year to learn the discipline to ‘think’ bass and NOT play bass like it was the lead guitar. Gained a lot of respect for bass players and the bass line that leaves room for other musicians to contribute.
@andreasrademacher57152 жыл бұрын
That's fast. Especially for a guitar player... I think, I never mastered that :) So, after about 15 years of bass I moved on for being the singer...
@ckmoore1012 жыл бұрын
@@andreasrademacher5715 Indeed. Sounds like you were a bass player pretending to be a guitar player all along. Run with it. I have tinkered with guitar for literally 35 years. Charles, I have a challenge for you. I’m completely blind, zero vision at all. I love the sound of slap bass and am only a lowly guitarist, so I have no idea how it’s done other than pulling on the strings like you’re going to shoot a rubber band at someone, which doesn’t seem possible to do so fast. Can you explain with words and sound alone how to play slap bass? I’m not a bassist. In fact, I can barely play guitar. This is not some covert, pathetic attempt at a free lesson, but I know enough about playing musical instruments to find the mechanics of it extremely interesting. Would you make a video explaining how to play slap bass, not free of visuals but such that visuals are not necessary to understand the explanation? assume that the listener already knows how to do a normal pluck on a guitar or bass. Thank you for your killer videos. Listening to you whack away at that bass so expertly never ceases to be absolutely thrilling!

How in the world does someone get so incredibly good at an instrument? It’s almost impossible to fathom. Nobody should be able to do what he just made look so incredibly easy. Looking through the comments for the hell of it one dude said he’s been playing for 35 years and he still can’t learn to slap. I believe it, I tried it once (even though I haven’t played for any significant amount of time) and it was a train wreck. I love that bass he has, the look and especially the sound of it.

The popular rule of thumb is it takes 10,000 hours of regular practice to become a world class master of a skill such as being a musician. So if you practice about three hours every day for 8 years, for instance, that’s around the level of work it takes to be really exceptional. Charles’ bio says he seriously started studying music about 10 years ago, so that timeline fits.

I played bass for over a decade and that was way before the internet, no teacher, nothing. So, my approach was to be always as clean as possible. I didn't know bass players played with their fingers, so I took up a pick and trained myself to be as smooth as possible with it. No harsh sounds, no clack or much attack at all. The sound of hitting the frets to me was a sacrilege... I was a big Iron Maiden fan and thought Steve Harris is just sloppy... I would never have identified Mark Kings playing as bass guitar, just because I didn't know it could and was used like this. Later I looked down on slapping as "showing off" (of course also because I couldn't do it...), never liked the sound. With that mindset this clip is difficult to relate to. Later in my "career" I learned about it, needed to use it in bands, but never really got a good hold of it. But nowadays I can definitely appreciate what you are doing. It's mind blowing technically, but I'm absolutely stunned by the musicality you are showing with all your compositions and interpretations. In addition you have a great sense of humor and a nice personality, despite being the best out there. Keep it that way, you are amazing at playing bass guitar/music, but the latter makes you great.
