I live in Australia. I've tried every colour imaginable, eyes, shapes, you name it. I have one drone that is almost entirely red due to blood from birds getting clipped hitting the blades over the years. All you can do is aggressive manoeuvres and land instantly. There's no trick that works. Unless you're willing to hurt the birds, in which case your drone can sustain many hits and they will bleed to death before your drone is grounded (and insurance is only $70). I'd never do this though, because even if they're right pests and you're mad at them, they're innocent critters just trying to survive.

That's a great tip Stephen! Barn swallows seem to be the only birds that take too much interest in my drones. As you know I fly at the Snake River Canyon often and am around a lot of raptors. They never seem to give a second look when I fly.

Hey Marcus. Thanks. Yeah, Snake Canyon, on my need-to-fly list with you. I never seem to see much birds in your videos, so your lucky.

Kinda makes sense, colour has its own language and in the animal kingdom that is heightened from a survival perspective. One slight twist though, if birds are nesting or rearing chicks, prone to deserting nests and chicks if they feel under threat, please beware of SSSI’s, find out why they’re designated as such, it’s often because of nesting and migration of birds and other animals such as sea lions…. These SSSI’s show up on apps such drone assist, and it’s often only a timing thing, certain times of the year which you need to be extra vigilant. I was flying inland in a class G non-SSSI’s area recently, and my drone was attacked or buzzed out of the blue by a buzzard, luckily it was a warning pass, I simply landed the drone and the buzzard just moved on, it seemed to make the relation between a human and the drone once I brought the drone in close to me, a few moments later and it was hovering a couple miles away, it was simply protecting its hunting territory, I just flew lower and nearer and maintained a heightened awareness, it didn’t return. A beautiful creature btw.

I put red reflective stripes of tape on the rear of the arms and battery compartment to see the drone better, and I have noticed birds keeping their distance. But every time birds get too close, I always fly around the 80-metre mark so I can shoot up in height to get away from them as that's the only angle birds can't fly at such a sudden increase speed of rising up.

Great to hear Gary. Higher altitude helps, but difficult in a production environment.

Magpies in Australia absolutely can keep up with mini 1, 2 and 3 upwards max acceleration in sport mode. They might lag behind a little but they'll get you. I just wish we could descend way faster, the controlled descent is so bloody slow the birds always get me! You should be able to drop like a stone - it should use it's altitude judgment to know how much space it needs to brake before 1-2 m above the ground. That way you could have an oh-shit button for magpie and crow attacks, which is how a lot of us lose drones down here.

A few weeks ago, i was flying my mavic 3 pro on a out of signal range waypoint mission. When it came back, the gimbal was pointing toward the drone, and the left front propeller was damaged. The video stopped after the impact, but i watched the video before the impact. There was absolutely no sign of birds or people in the video. It was flying in a totally straight line and a constant altitude of 72 feet. There are no signs of it being hit by a rock, and there were no wires anywhere near it's path. I was hoping if i could turn the gimbal around it would work ok. But i was finally able to do that, but then there was jello in the video, so i had to send it in to DJI a few days ago. I fly a lot, and see a lot of birds come surprisingly close to my drone, but they've never hit it. So i will try you red tape theory. Thanks a lot! Steve

This is a great idea! I can say that I had a dope green yellow and black skin on my original mavic pro ( old school) and I never had birds bother me. I sold my OG Pro for a Mavic Pro3 never added a decal or anthything and the birds swarm it every time. I’m going to try your tape method before while i wait on my skins for the pro 3 to come in. PS I like this Pro 3 but man do I miss my Mavic Pro OG!! 😃

I always have a white strobe on top, and red and green ones on the forward arms. Hawks and ospreys where I fly. No trouble yet. I don't know if the strobes protect my drones (Air 2, Mini 3 Pro) but I use them anyway.

One thing I found to be very helpful is a red strobe light and adhere it upside down so it flashes downward which will absolutely annoy the ever living crap out of any bird flying towards you and they will not attack or go anywhere near you 👍🏽
