This shit actually happened in a Magic tournament once. Without getting into too much detail, a guy played a card that let's you name any card and then abilities of the named card can't be activated. He intended to name Borborygmos Enraged (a key piece of his opponents combo), but just said "Borborygmos" and because there is another card called Borborygmos, the tournament judge ruled that he named that card instead of the combo piece. They actually changed the rules after that, it's now on both players to be clear on what card was named before the game goes on, and you can always call a judge if your opponent is being shitty about it.
@JD-wu5pf2 жыл бұрын
The judge 100% had money riding on that game. I can't think of any other reason why he'd fuck over a player that badly.

@@JD-wu5pf I can imagine someone acting like a "computer" and trying to interpret the rules as strictly as possible. Guy was probably worried about their job.
@MrMeltJr2 жыл бұрын
@@JD-wu5pf Not really. Magic is very serious about it's rules, the designers put a lot of effort into making sure there are rules to cover literally anything that could ever happen in a game. Magic judges are supposed to enforce the letter of the law with no personal interpretations, so that no matter where you play and who's judging, the rules will work the same no matter what. Honestly I put more blame on the opponent, he definitely knew what card he intended to name but rules lawyered his way around it. It's a great system 99.9% of the time, but that 0.1% comes up now and then. They're usually pretty quick about changing the rules to fix these kind of things, though.
@imperiallarch76102 жыл бұрын
I still can't believe they changed the rule over this, it seems obvious to me that you should have to say the actual card name. If you named "Borborygmos" then you named "Borborygmos."
@MrMeltJr2 жыл бұрын
@@imperiallarch7610 I think the rule change was great. For one, it prevents stuff like this from happening again due to similar card names. It also helps players who don't speak English very well (or at all) with card names that might not have simple translations to English. Most foreign tournament players are probably going to learn English card names anyway, but this helps everybody avoid confusion. There have been other weird tournament rulings that came from non-English-speaking players saying something wrong.

Fun fact! One time in a MtG tournament there were two opponents: one of the player's main win conditions was activating a card named "Borborygmos, Enraged", and to counter this, the other player was playing a card named pithing needle to prevent the first player from activating his win condition. Pithing needle directs its controller to name a card, and then instructs that activated abilities of the named card can't be activated. The second player named the card "Borborygmos", which happens to be the name of a second card, that is entirely different from "Borborygmos, Enraged". The judges ruled that under the pithing needle that had named "Borborygmos", "Borborygmos, Enraged" could be activated to it's controller's heart's content.

I am reminded of Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy, one of the few Numbers cards to not have their title dropped when brought into English. For those who don't know, there's a series of monster cards in Yugioh called "Number" which, in the original Japanese, have a title in their card name, which goes with a "given" name (except for the Over 100 ones i think). When brought over, the English game dropped the titles for basically all of them, except for the Hope related Manga ones that werent Utopia. So, cards like the protagonist's ace, Utopia (named Hope in Japanese, as in "Houpu") was changed from "Number 39: King of Wishes, Hope" to just "Number 39: Utopia." These names aren't even that long in Japanese, text wise, as they're always in Japanese, written in Kanji, with the given name being in Katakana. So Utopia's Japanese name was writen as No. 39 希望皇霍普ホープ. Titanic Galaxy up there was simply No. 39 魁竜タイタニック・ギャラクシー (Kibou Kairyuu Titanic Galaxy), which takes up SIGNIFICANTLY less space than a direct translation. Yet they directly translated it. For some reason.

This is why MTG implemented a rule colloquially known as "That One Borborygmos Rule." There's a card in MTG that nullifies the abilities of any card named. Player A played the card and said "Borborygmos," which was the secondary win con of Player B's deck. Later, B played the exact card A was talking about, which the ref ruled in favor of because "Borborygmos" is a card that exists when the card A should have named was "Borborygmos, Enraged," even though the card "Borborygmos" wasn't used anywhere in that game being played and everyone knew what he was talking about. Later, Wizards of the Coast created the above rule to basically say "You don't have to say the full name of the card if everyone knows what you're talking about."

I liked the part where he played Supergalaxy Milk-Lord Bovicus and used his effect, White Hole Neutron Discharge to destroy all spells, field effects, and moonsters on the board Blew my mind when White Hole Neutron Discharge was changed to only require loading a Black Hole Trap by banishing ten Holstein archetype moonsters from play.

And this is why MtG has a specific rule about the fact you don't need a specific card name as long as both players understand which card is being referred to. That, and Borborygmus.

Hilariously something like this actually happened in an official tournament of Magic: The Gathering which resulted in one player using naming the game's naming conventions to create a loophole, netting him the win.

Oh yeah, the Pithing Needle controversy. Yeah, that wasn't fun for anyone involved.
@enlongjones23942 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There’s a card called Borborygmos Enraged. Which is a much more powerful version of the character first introduced in the card just called “Borborygmos”. So when someone just declared “Borborygmos” with a card that prevents the opponent from using any card you name, the player used Borborygmos Enraged, because “Borborygmos” by itself is a valid card. Even though everyone at the table and the spectators knew that he meant Borborygmos Enraged; it’s just shorthand.
@thewanderingmistnull24512 жыл бұрын
That's not a loophole, that's how the game works. You can scream about "shorthand" all you want, but the fact is there are plenty of cards whose names will be exactly the same when shortened. There's like thirteen Lillianas and eight Chandras. It's up to the person _naming the card_ to be specific. They don't get to blanket ban a name until they see what their opponent is actually using.
@HalcaeonArt2 жыл бұрын
@TheWanderingMist null I consider it a loophole because both players knew what the guy meant when he said Borborygmos. I don't think the original one was even legal to play in that tournament, and even if it was it'd be dumb to want to name it because its abilities doesn't work with the deck. WOTC eventually updated the rules to favor not needing to be exact when naming a card, both players only need to agree that there is no confusion on what card is being named.

hello from yugioh, where we have such prime selections as: "Gogigago Gagagigo" and "Zubababancho Gagagacoat" which lets you special summon it, if it's in your hand while you control a "Zubaba" or "Gagaga" monster (except for Zubababancho Gagagacoat). And it can target 1 "Gogogo" or "Dododo" monster in your graveyard and special summon it, but you then can't special summon monsters from the extra deck for the rest of that turn (except for Xyz monsters). And, of course, you can only use each effect of Zubababancho Gagagacoat once per turn.
