I stopped playing during WotLK. The entire feeling of the game disappeared for me. I knew it was over at that point, canceled my subscription and didn't come back up till classic launched in 2019.

For me one of the worst things about Wrath was 'Gearscore' and the beginning of judging people by an arbitrary ilvl number.

5:14 - I could see the direction WoW was going (what I thought was a decline) late into TBC when you could make cosmetic changes to your characters. I knew it'd only get worse.

I played WoW as a kid vanilla the most, then moreso leveling and dungeoneering in TBC, then more seriously raiding again in WotLK through Ulduar until during the ToC raiding patch I quit. I do think Wrath was the beginning of the end and Cataclysm was the chasm that most clearly marks the line in the sand Blizzard crossed.

I remember people complaining about homogenization of classes and welfare epics (badge gear) in wotlk. It's true. TBC was the last of classic

Badge gear is fine if the gear is interesting. The problem is everything turned into a generic stat stick. No need to figure out things like attack speed, or fun procs and just weird items that makes vanilla so fun

Ofc it is. Working hard for something makes the reward feel greater. Investing time into your character makes you feel more connected with it.

You're right that the sentiment of the games decline was widespread, mmo-champions forum was very negative about the game during wrath I remember.

I was exactly the same on Wrath. That's when I stopped paying attention, and shortly thereafter quit the game for a while. There were other things going on in my life too, but it just started to not fit my playstyle

Vanilla>TBC>Wrath>full reset>repeat. This is the cycle they should keep for classic (IMO)

10:06 Everquest... anyone whose a fan of classic WoW and searching for something new should try out the game that inspired so many of WoW's features. Project 1999 or Project Quarm are both great options.

Agreed, for someone who has always played WoW as their main mmo, EQ can be mind blowing when you play for the first time, especially on P99(Quarm became too custom imo), there are so many features that were clearly what inspired blizzard while making the original WoW that you may even find yourself at home right off the bat.

It's always wild to me when people talk about vanilla wow being hardcore/"not catering to players" when it was specifically made for a casual audience at the time. Compare it to launch Everquest, Ultima Online or Shadow Bane. WoW was super casual. Just having *instances* was considered a massive QoL change to make the game more casual. Shoot, Everquest in 1999 didn't even have an in game map. You had an ability called Sense Heading which would tell you if you were facing North. But you had to train it by spamming it non stop so when you started it would just point you in random directions. You also didn't have quest givers. You just would talk to some NPCs and they may have had something for you to do but otherwise it was grind city. It's just the bar has dropped below the floor in terms of catering to players now.

wrath was fun leveling, naxx was ok but disappointing difficulty. ulduar had guilds stealing healers from our guild - so we couldn't raid, ended up just running around dalaran bored out of my mind. toc was hopeful but really felt like a slot machine, very instant with lots of afk around resets. everyone in my vanilla guild quit in wotlk. tbc is my favorite expansion, it's 10/10. but vanilla is 9.9/10 - none of my characters were really strong so my success depended on others. wotlk would be probably 7/10 for me. cata onwards is all 1/10

Wrath would be a perfect expansion if they keep the classic feeling. Hard leveling, no raid difficulties, and no dungeon finder.

Loved yours and MadSeason video, but just a note: I don't ever think that the "spirit of vanilla" has anything to do with the world being brutal and dangerous. As a vanilla player, like you, I never thought the world was any of that because death doesnt matter in any version of WoW. I do agree that the "world" is the main character or rather you are just one more of those adventures who travel the world. Also, theres not lots of inconveniences, FPs are a godsend, lol. But the world to me was always a chill experience; as big as it was, was really fascinating to explore without any fear of losing anything. But I can concede that I might be too used to the inconveniences of P99 Everquest, because I'd point that there is the game where death matters and the world really doesnt care about you. Looking forward more vanilla wow videos/reflections!

2:50 - it promotes that the game "starts" at endgame - enough so that they are SELLING you a solution to the "PROBLEM" of not being max level with pre-bis gear.... the thing is - in EVERY OTHER GAME - not having the final weapon/armor is a problem THE PLAYER gets to solve for with what they find and in how to approach getting items.... that's why retail is a bad GAME/RPG -

If im in a well populated server vanilla is top. if im in a low populated server wrath is better cuz i dont have to spam lfg in chat all day. thats my perspective. If talking just pure gameplay, then vanilla is the best.

Since 2019 when we progressed through the golden era expansions I will say for me, wrath was the first one where I started to feel like I had nostalgia goggles for the game and didn’t really enjoy it the way I enjoyed revisiting classic vanilla and tbc. Played way more era than wrath at that point. Speaking of which I’d love a tbc server or even to copy my tbc snapshot to run a few of those raids and dungeons once in a while

Classic actually needs a new expansion but in the vanilla spirit where everything is brand new again with no RFD, Flying, xmog, hero of Azeroth etc. Where certain added QoL features are only enjoyed at max level. So many would be on board.

It needs an expansion of the world, not 4 new contiguous zones in a new continent that will be abandoned. Level needs to stay 60max, and all content should stay relevant. Items should be sidgrades or cater more specifically to talent builds as you add in more things.

I feel it's so bothersome.. just like 2019 I am sat here again despite they have all the ips without being able to play classic.. Are we doomed to be constantly sat here on the side lines.. asking blizzard to give us what we are as customers willing to pay for and accept.. A bad quality product is... Regardless of the backdrop it's built on like SOD will not encourage customers to continue to pay for it.. I mean it's f $15 a month!!! For what??! Utter tripe.. rehashed stuff or worse.. not keeping up dedicated servers for tbc and wrath.. Give us quality products and we will pay.. I'd like classic era for tbc and wrath. And classic plus.. The customer is always right! It seems the people running blizzard are totally incompetent and incapable of knowing their customers.. I was hoping after Microsoft bought Blizzard they would be forced to figure their sh*t out.. seems those fools need to step aside for more capable people..

My 2 week old baby just killed my HC character by hitting my mouse and I ran off a cliff in azhara. I was so disappointed but so inspired by your shaman gameplay Im making my way back up. Ive yet to complete a lot of dungeon/raid content which is my goal. (Hopefully before blizz makes so many changes to classic and ruins it)

You do have to admit, really difficult 5, 10 or 20 man dungeons and raids would have made classic more interesting. I do feel like being one of 40 really flattens any individual contribution and creates this buffer of averages that can float a raid and minimize mistakes. I rarely feel the thrill of serious enough danger in 5 man dungeons to warrant true collaboration and planning.

I hate to admit but I think is selfish to say its bad that they released Cataclysm Classic. Raiding numbers are high (even though now is a low point). Many ppl is enjoying the game, and we already did enjoy Vanilla re-release in 2019. Classic Vanilla players have their own servers to enjoy. The fact that we are loving classic or vanilla is because is in an horrible state, which sould be the game we should be playing if they had done things well...
