That’s the opposite of what my old teacher told me, she always said to use as little bow as I could with those parts in a piece

Other than one specific instance regarding a particular orchestra excerpt, I never had a teacher tell me to use less bow. It's more like this Heifetz Masterclass where the guy is playing Tchaikovsky 3rd movement and he keeps yelling at him incessantly to use more bow. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmTTfaqMndJqrrssi=-aWjGkNCVhGaubmp&t=2638 Using less bow can make things FEEL cleaner in the short term, but doesn't often produce the best results for a performance. You can learn to play clearly with more bow, even in fast passages

@@MurphyMusicAcademy it always made sense to me to use more bow, but I guess not to her🤷‍♀️ I should talk to my current teacher about this topic, he definitely disagreed with my old teacher about a lot of other things, and I’ve had to re-learn a little bit because of both my teachers drastically different teaching styles. I agree with you though, more bow sounds quite a bit better.

Thats it. Precision is necessary but the attitude and feel is what makes the audience gasp.

I think this can be achieved, without sacrificing accuracy, by aiming for better bow placement. We often default to the middle of the bow for fast passages; but, the attack is often watered-down mix of spiccato (further towards the tip) and detaché (further towards the frog) Making a purposeful decision between the two and refining the attack would help this passage a lot. Also, phrasing through the scale on top of refining the attach would be perfect.

I love when classical music has a messy part. A good example of it is in the start of Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Sadly the technical perfection is what is praised in competitions, and doing good in competitions is necessary to get that career boost. Which means messy but emotional will lose against perfection and blandness.

A lot of yall are being silly and clearly have never taken a private music lesson before. Critique like this is basically a free lesson. She’s young and still learning, I’m sure she greatly appreciates the critique.

I'm not a musician and know little about the technique of it all, but the way I see it is that the violin is a very emotional instrument, and I can definitely see how sacrificing some accuracy to embellish the emotion would add to the raw feeling of the piece... Again, what do I know though

Showmanship is preferred over accuracy if in a public setting. If you wanted pure accuracy you would just listen to a CD

I see what you're saying expression wise. Smaller amounts of bow is a better choice for clarity. Why would you use detache on a passage that fast? It has an unsightly muddy quality. Completely disagree with your assessment of that passage. I'll listen more careful to the concerto and see if I hear what you're reccomending. Great food for thought.

Critiquing for clicks is why he is doing it. He knows a lot but he's dining out on her popularity. Very distasteful. Overall he sees her as quite accomplished but he dishes out flinty praise. He must think that flinty remarks spice up the clip and give him more clicks, thus make him more money. Pretty low-class. I think he would have made just as much money if he had given the same critique in a little more elevated manner.

Have you ever heard of Giuseppe Gibboni? Winner of the last Paganini Competition? I saw him perform with the Detroit Symphony last year. Not the cleanest player by any means, but he absolutely brought the house down because he was flashy and entertaining. I of course, advocate being both exciting and accurate, but while YOU may not forgive messy, the audience at large will

As my teacher says, a wrong note with conviction is an interpretation. Music first, than the notes, not the other way around

Critiquing for clicks is why he is doing it. He knows a lot but nobody asked him. Instead, he invited himself to the table to dine out on her popularity. Overall he sees her as quite accomplished but he dishes out praise sparingly, even reluctantly? He must think that flinty remarks spice up the clip and give him more clicks, thus making him more money. I think he would have made just as much money if he had given the same critique in a little more elevated manner. Not euphemistically, just a little less harsh. But maybe that's not part of who he is. In the end, I think we learn more about Murphy than how well she plays. As the Spanish would say, this dude isn't very simpatico.
