One of the ONLY issues with the sterile, game-ified versions of "knife attacks" is the lack of the context that exists in every real knife encounter that changes how it plays out. Furniture, the "ambush" effect, the pre-fight work-up (if there was one, and its not simply a prison style assassination). Lots of moving parts when it happens IRL. The intensity, the physicality involved, the very primitive technical skillsets that are used, the chaotic nature and such are all really good and useful training though. It really shows that the knife man only has to get lucky once to kill you.

Gentlemen, stop thrashing each other in the comments! This video is just a way to explore scenarios that are unusual or worthy to discuss! We all agree that the best defence against a knife is either running or a gun! Thanks for the shout-out, my man!

Old FBI stat said that most fatal knife fights start as regular fist fight, and once on the ground one person draws a knife and stab/cuts the other guy. Victim never even knows about the knife until it is too late.... Cutting the leg would have sent blood everywhere, but is better than into the body. If they did a tourniqute after, might survive. Serious people carry emergency tourniqutes all the time. If they come to cut you, not much chance, but if they are only using knife to threaten you, there is a slime chance of getting control before they switch intent to stab and cut. When we played with this at my school getting a hold of the knife hand and never letting go was the best, but everyone got cut. Get a white t-shirt and get some sharpie markers.....hard to argue with all those ink lines on the arm and body.

The only real way to stop getting stabbed is to get a hold of the free-swinging arm and never let it go, just like you said.

As a FMA practitioner there is so many things wrong with this! First it is a game, change that marker knife for a shock knife and see how it changes the def guys reactions. Second in FMA we are taught to "defang the snake" which means in simplest terms take out the opponents hands, in this case the opponents feet, our aggressor just keeps taking the hits and trying to get in. A couple of good slashes to the defenders unguarded calves and his feet are going to be a floppy mess. Not to mention the guy on the ground will no longer be able to get up. then work your way in from there. Giving up your mobility to turtle up just seems so wrong!

These "sport-ified" self-defense scenarios are good for training, but they're not an accurate reflection of the real deal. Besides having protective gear, you KNOW your not going to get cut out stabbed. That has a HUGE psychological effect. Also, the fact that your NOT getting cut out stabbed means that not suffering the consequences of those injuries. This is the self-defense equivalent of Tai Chi push hands (getting turned into a competition.) Are these scenarios good for training? Yes, because until we can plug into The Matrix and run the scenarios with a "real" knife, or respawn like Tom Cruise in Live, Die, Repeat, it's as close as we can get, but they shouldn't be taken as anything more than that.

This is not taken into consideration of the knife attacker using a serrated blade, which would cut all your tendons and muscles. The victims wouldn't be fighting much once their arms and legs are fileted.
