And when the topic of age comes up in the context of dating and sex, every person agrees it feels incredibly gross and inappropriate to be intimate with someone that young. Legally, it’s fine, yes. But 19 is still a kid. I have clients who are 19 and 20 years old, and while I can acknowledge they are attractive, I see them as kids. The way they talk, the way they express themselves - even the most mature has that youthful sense to them, and that what makes it feel kinda gross. And my view isn’t just anecdotal. How much different do you think a 16 or 17 year old is developmentally from a 18 or 19 year old? The very reason it’s illegal to engage with underaged people intimately is because we know they lack full comprehension to give consent to an adult, and can be easily manipulated by one. That doesn’t magically change on their 18th birthday, dude. They are still young minded. Even college aged guys and girls can be manipulated by someone just 10 years older. And yes, I am that there are grown adults who are immature and young people who are very mature. However, as a mature minded adult knows very well the most mature youth is still not mature and can still be manipulated. It’s just a psychological and physiological fact. Saying things like “Oh it’s just age and they are both legally adults” just falls into the creep mentality of those who count down an attractive celebrities 18th birthday so they can openly drool over them without being shamed. It’s disgusting.

Even if it's easier to be manipulated, doesn't mean that you were. In fact most people I know genuinely would LIKE to have a sexual relationship with someone more mature than people their age. I don't find it gross or creepy at all, but maybe that's also a cultural thing. Here, it also isn't illegal to have sex with a minor so maybe just more open minded here (not saying that's necessarily a good thing, nor bad).

Therefore the same logic applies to someone who is 18 or 19. They are still developmentally young, so there is still equal likelihood they were coerced into sex since they are literally hardly any different from a teen mentally in their ability to make decisions, regulate their emotional impulses, and factor in future planning. Again, it just a developmental fact. Now, I am not one to disrespect a culture. But just because something is the norm in a culture does not make it right. No matter what culture it is, it is a CHILD. They are not fully developed mentally and it is just plain inappropriate; the power dynamic is completely one sided. Having sex with a child who is too young to genuinely consent is not "open-minded." It's predatory.
