I agree with what you are saying. Sometimes, I'll look at my collection and think, 'Why do I have this?". I'm going to start giving myself a rule that if I upgrade something to Blu-Ray or DVD then I will get rid of the old copy I have, unless it's a film I want to own multiple copies of or if the DVD has features that the Blu-Ray doesn't.

I whittled down my collection from about 3000 to about 300 because as much i as love movies there is only 24 hours in the day and 8 of those is used for sleep, most days 8 of that is used for working and that leaves me 8 hours to be social with my significant other and friends and watch newer things. There is no point in keeping things that have either 0 personal value or that you will never watch. You may think you will watch 6000/10000 movies you own but you won't, even averaging that out to 1.5 hours that's over a year in hours, it would take you 1 year to watch 6000 movies 24/7 so if you watched 1-2 movies of those every night you still wouldn't watch all of them before you go to bed and this is why i am starting to buy into digital. I can buy a vudu movie form blu-ray forums for $3 instead of $20. That's as cheap as a redbox rental and contrary to belief vudu isn't going anywhere.

I couldn't get rid of stuff like that. I have almost 2000 dvds and blu-rays. Things are almost always tight money-wise, so I almost never get anything unless I'm at least 90 percent positive that I'll watch it multiple times. I think, in my entire collection, I only have 5 movies that I'm 99% sure that I'll never watch again. But I can't get rid of them as they were gifts and it would feel weird to get rid of them.

I shrunk my DVD/blu-ray collection down by a lot, there are still a few things my mind won't let me get rid of, but for the most part I try to hold on to just the things I really, really love. Full season sets of t.v. shows are evil dust collectors, how many times are you going to sit down and watch a full season of something again? Even if it's a show you love, let alone one you just kinda like. You could probably put that money to good use - new clothes, new video adventures, think of the possibilities.

This is also where I get a lot of my dvds (I mean I get them for $2 dollars so why not) but the one thing I do (same with clothes I wear) if I can see myself watching it again or I know my fiancee nieces or nephews will watch it I will get it. I'm in the process of getting rid of a lot of my DVDs and Blu Rays. As I've come to the conclusion that many of the titles I'm not ever going to watch again. Along with that unless the title is from Criterion these movies lose their value fairly quickly. In some cases they are worth only pennies. Ideally I think my DVD/BD collection should be no more then around 100 titles. Currently I own about 200 DVDs and 400 Blu Rays.

I recommend selling most of that if you haven't yet. Think of something you could save up for and start purging your "collection". I've made about $1000 so far selling the majority of my DVD's and Blu-rays (and books, vinyl, CD's, etc.). I'm going to get a new video camera, a BMX bike, and the rest goes towards a new car. Keep your absolute favorite movies and limit it to one copy of each (with the exception of your all time number one favorite). That's what I've been working on and it's so easy. All my few movies exist on two shelving units, not hidden from view in random boxes that clutter my home. Just box things up and take them to a store to sell. Take the cash, not the store credit, and do something worthwhile with it. A small, well-planned collection is so much healthier than a huge pile of random stuff. If you're like me it'll be hard at first but once you get some momentum it feel amazing.

+Paul Kendrick If you have the same movie on both formats. Then go onto Amazon buy new blu ray cases which do not cost that much and that will accommodate the amount of disc that you need. You might have a 2 disc dvd set and a Blu ray so you would need a 3 disc case.. Swap everything out into the case including the blu ray artwork and there you go. You can get quite a few cases for under 20 bucks.
@ThePeople2C9 жыл бұрын
Exactly what he said, Me being obsessed with having both, Blu-Ray and DVD versions of movies, I was just gonna start doing the same. This way I can also weed out the eco cases and use the good cases for what I don't have on blu-ray or what isn't on blu-ray.

I used to hoard DVDs a while back. I did the same thing you're doing, going through and picking the shit out that I just don't need to keep. I recommend doing that a few times after you do it the first time. You'll be surprised by how much you'll pull out your third time going through your collection. I sold the crap on eBay for max value. I'm a collector by nature, so I just collect other things now. DVDs and Blurays just depreciate in value (not all of them, of course), so if you're not watching them, get rid of them while you can still get a bit of cash for them!

What I'd do is, Get rid of the DVD's, keep the Bluray's. Rip your fav DVD's to a RAID NAS media box. If the drive ever dies the second drive takes over until you replace the first so you won't lose them. You can rip them to ISO format so there's zero quality lose and software like SVP makes DVD's look better than any hardware upscaler. I know you said you like physical but view the average movies and TV shows on a stream in future before deciding if you want to buy them etc. Also DVD wallet's can save alot of space, I've thrown out all my blu cases and just kept the covers and disc's.
