Can’t say I ever worked in a factory that practiced lockout/ tagout. One even wanted me to operate a mill drill stuck in automatic feed. They said just be quick changing parts out. I said no. They found one of the senior citizen male employees that was willing to operate it like that. I worked in a foundry, injection molding, and a hydraulic cylinder plant. Not a single one trained or had any safety protocols. The foundry is still operating. They still have no safety protocol. The injection molding place closed. The hydraulic cylinder plant did finally take steps to ensure safety.

Just wanted to add, my dad has worked in a plastics facility 30+ years; where they make trash bags (in rolls) for places like McDonald's. I can definitely tell you that your garbage bags are made with the blood of many. Dangerous equipment like rollers, 5ft long blades, 30ft hot plastic balloons, 6ft rolls of plastic, forklifts, stacks of boxed product and that's not counting having to climb the cargo trains in all weather conditions to have the hoses suck up the plastic beads when they're delivered. Everything from chopped fingers and hands to scalped people, getting run over or crushed and deaths from falling off the trains or balloon scaffold all happened to make trash bags. Not everything is preventable, some of it depends on the way the material reacts to the manufacturing process, some to machines getting stuck, clogged misaligned etc, and only seconds to fix it or lose a ton of product. Those moments are the ones where things get dangerous. Thankfully my dad has only ever had minor injuries like cuts, scrapes and small burns from hot plastic. But he's seen some horrible stuff happen.

When I heard them say loose clothing, I thought to myself, "who in their right mind would wear loose clothing when working with moving parts equipment?" Same thing for loose hair and it getting caught in machinery with moving parts. These folks must have gotten there brains, from a BOX of CRACKERJACK!!!! I guess not everybody has the good sense/common sense/knowledge to know that machinery with moving parts are very dangerous and can pull your body in by anything that is loose and it can get a hold of, snag onto, and the like. I knew a young man that was working on a farm and had the top of his head ripped of. He live and functioned normally, but literally had a lopsided head and his glasses always sat on an angle. The same rule with loose clothing, and unrestrained hair goes for working with fire (and things that can cause fire), like cooking in a loose armed house coat and etc!

My friend worked as an engineer in the printing industry in the 90's. He would be on call for when printing presses went down to go and fix them. He always said that the worst incident he ever saw was when he was at XXXXX company and was fixing a machine and was only about 100meters away from where a woman got both her hands cut off by a guillotine. He said the lady had pushed a stack of paper to be cut and the holding bar came down and locked both her hands down, he said you then have about a 4 second wait while the machine works out the cut. Imagine having both hands trapped KNOWING that in about 4 seconds you will not have any hands.!!! It turned out that it was sunshine hitting the safety clear beam return, so the machine thought it was ok to lock down. A one in a billion chance of this happening and not the poor ladies fault at all. Needless to say the factory changed the way and type of sensors it used.

I would make sure that I had a damn good understanding of the LOTO system in place and "MY" locks would be on the controls before ever entering the line. Having worked in a large tool and die plant that also had its own forge operation, I cannot express how important tight fitting clothing and short or covered hair are. Mainline industrial machines will snatch your sleeve or pony tail in an instant and at the speed they are operating at, no safety shutoff will save you from horrific or deadly injuries. The blender would probably be more gruesome although a press would be a bad way to go too depending on the tool sizing =(

I had one close call in shop class, on the table saw. I was making a dado cut and to accommodate the thicker blade stack we had to swap out the metal blade cover for a plexiglass one. I was pushing my material through and when I was pushing down hard enough that the plexiglass was flexing down and i didn’t see it. The blade stack caught the cover and sucked it and my workpiece down into the table. I pulled my hands back so fast. Damn. My friend Brian hurt himself on the table saw. One day I just happened to notice he was walking round, like in a circle, holding his hand. I walked over to see if he was alright and he showed me his hand. It wasn’t bad. Apparently the blade caught his finger nail and pulled it off. Not a severe injury, but he was clearly in shock.

I worked in a factory and like many places there was inadequate training and a focus on speed above safety. An eighteen year old was working near a glue press when one of his co-workers turned the machine on when he still had his hand inside the press, he would up having his hand crushed and melted by the glue. Not surprisingly management came forward immediately putting the blame entirely on the victim. I left shortly afterward but I hope be sued and won.

A 17 year old girl in my town had almost her entire right arm torn off when she reached down between the chains pulling a car into the car wash where she was working. A piece of trash had fallen under the chains and there was a car already on the line, but instead of pressing the stop button, she reached down there and immediately became stuck. Before anyone could react, her arm was wrapped into the chain and torn almost off. The EMS actually had to finish amputating her arm to get her out of there. She lived, but at what cost?? I worked in a meat packaging plant as part of sanitation. We had to pressure wash the equipment after production. They updated all the equipment and didn't give us proper training on how to run and operate the new machines. Because of that one of my co-workers was cleaning out one of the blenders, which had a chunk of meat stuck in one of the blades, so he stuck his hand in there to dislodge it, which triggered the sensor and cut the machine on and the blade grabbed his a and pinched it off from the elbow up. Hey carl. Answer to your question. That all depends on if your going into either machine feet or head first and what type of industrial press it is because some move very slowly while some are quick and over in an instant. Ive seen, on my first day of kindergarten back home, a man being sucked into a woodchipper feet first after trying to kick free a blockage. While at the same time, i had to have a metal plate put into my head at the age of 8 when a new guy my dad hired failed to properly connect the cuplinks of two air compressor hoses and the force with which the compressed air moved through the lines when the air nailer was discharged caused the unsecured lines to violently blow apart and one of the solid brass cuplinks caught me perfectly between the brim of my hardhat and my safety glasses (dad owned and operated a home renovation/construction contracting business) and shattered my right eye socket, gave me a knarly scar, and knocked me out without me ever knowing what had happened. When i came too in the hospital two days later, our family doctor and the surgeon where both chuckling and smiling at me (out of relief) and our family doctor started off the explanation as to what happened and why i was in the hospital with: "Thanks the Gods for your hard head, little one." (He was an Egyptian-Canadian immigrant, hence the "Gods" instead of God) So, id rather not know what happened and, ultimately feel no pain, if i where to die in an industrial/workplace accident rather then know, see and feel myself being ripped apart.

I was a welder in a factory a few years ago. Alot of factories hire you and by your second day they throw you on heavy machinery. One of my friends was working a big factory saw with a conveyer belt and the safely guard on her saw was broken. And even I had operated her saw in her absence. The saw blade snagged her glove and pulled her and under the saw blade. The saw blade cut 3 fingers off i had to dig thru a bin to find her fingers but due to them landing in saw dust and scraps the risk of infection was so high they couldn't reattach them. Please if you work in a factory ensure your machine has an emergency stop button and don't run a machine if you feel you're not ready for it or not trained well enough speak up it could save your life.
@TheTheo58
@TheTheo58 2 жыл бұрын
A question I have is why this saw was not taken off line? The safety guard was broken, that was a big safety hazard an accident waiting to happen. If a machine is broken or unsafe needs to be locked out until it is properly repaired.
@brittyvegas9482

@@TheTheo58 i am not sure but they got fined by OSHA...they did an investigation the company had numerous violations and settled out of court. They did shut the machine down for a little while after the incident and had the guards repaired and they are actually still using that saw today. I'm a mover, A few years ago we were on this job & the lady had a 12' long granite marble table. I was with 2 other guys normally we wouldn't take a piece like this by the time we lifted it & got it to the ramp, I had been thrown off balance & tried to put my end down. My left pinkie got pinned under the corner. I almost passed out in the customers driveway. There was tissue explosion & loss, the bone was exposed. The Paramedics gave me morphine when they arrived,, one of my crew almost passed out from seeing it. My other crew guy was able to get a pressure dressing on it. I had over twenty stitches in the finger. It was broken & crushed in two places. The tendon never healed properly so it drooped when it healed. I will get it fixed one day. Just glad I didn't loose my whole finger. Cold days are brutal though on it. I was off work for a good 6 weeks. If I ever encountered another massive piece I'd call for more help or use our dollies lesson learned I tell ya what.

My mom worked at Hershey's in Smiths Falls, Ontario before i was born. She was sitting on a stool on the reeces pb cup line which was on a platform 2 or 3 feet high. So she was about 5 or 6 feet from the floor when the weld on the stool gave way. She fell backwards to the concrete floor breaking her jaw and causing a major concussion. She suffered yrs until finding treatment and pain management that makes her life tolerable. She got a large settlement from Hershey as well but it took decades of litigation.

Back in 1974 I worked tat ARMCO STEEL machine shop in Houston Texas. There was a guy that had extra long hair that worked on a Lathe. He had stopped the lathe to check his measurements but had the machine in neutral. As he leaned over to check his work his hair was touching the steel piece he was checking. While leaning over he accidentally hit the gear causing the lathe to spin. His long hair got entangled and half of his scalp was ripped off. What a horrible bloody sight it was and naturally he was screaming in pain. Fortunately for him they were able to stitch his scalp and long hair back on. The hair on that side fell out but eventually grew back. What a sight I’ll never forget. If you happen to be a long haired lathe operator I would strongly suggest tying it up while your working 😲.

#3. I remember when that happened. The raisin plant is located in the county, where I live. They Will Kill You should create a second part of this video. Here's a video about a man who was cooked, alive, at a tuna plant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZyriIRvrLOlZ6M I worked at a plant that produced baby food. Some of the jars, filled with baby food, had to be cooked, with boiling water. One man, burned the skin, on his feet, by the boiling water, because he had opened the door, that cooked the baby food, before all the scathing hot water was drained, from the cooker. When he opened the door, some of the hot water landed on his feet. Even though he was wearing shoes, the hot water melted the skin of his feet. It was his first day at work.

As someone who has spent years in a factory, may I say one thing. Rarely is the issue a machine malfunction. In all of the worst accidents I’ve seen or heard about, it’s human error. The machine is predictable and has a limited range of motion. People have an unlimited supply of carelessness, complacency and outright stupidity. Form fitting clothes, hair up and back in a clip, no hoods, no jewellery.
