I quit my job 2 months ago. I was a photographer/videographer national brand franchise restaurant. Now, I am in my first month of plumbing apprenticeship at open shop. I love my job. This is the best choice I have ever made.

I'm thinking about it, the only reason I'm still there is out of a sense of obligation. That's what I need help with, how do I tell the part of me to shut up and move on?

I’ll say this about plumbing, I took the exam for the local union the guy supervising fell asleep and the guy next to me looked up all the answers on his phone…I literally stood up and walked out. Went to a company that swore up and down they’d properly train me and proceeded to put me on my own truck(0 plumbing experience but very mechanical) in 6 weeks. Next company I interviewed for 1099’d everyone. You brought your own truck and tools and they pay you a set rate kinda like a mechanic(which for an inexperienced guy like myself gets screwed) man if there was a company I could work for that would train me properly I’d work there forever. I feel like I was born in the wrong era.

Im thinking about plumbing school. Im another tradesman (butcher) but hard to find that work local....should i change trades and plumb? I have most tools and an interest after working on my own jet pump well system. Id want to learn as much as i could - wells - plumbing - heat pumps - is it worth it at almost 35 with 4 little kids?

What about nepotism or your boss putting a note up stating they aren't paying overtime this year 🤦

I've been working at a bike shop as a mechanic and intend to go into plumbing mainly because I stopped learning and progressing in the industry. The only things slowing me down are the need to maintain my current income and the lengthy waiting period to be enrolled in my local union. I might default and go the nonunion route to get experience as soon as possible.

Don’t they pay you as an apprentice if you got through a union?
@Boblol126
@Boblol126 4 күн бұрын
@@Monkey-boyo_0 Kind of. You do get paid as an apprentice but only once you become accepted to the program and are assigned to work under a contractor of the union's choosing. In my locals, they place you on a waiting list and it can take years before they pull you off of the list and enroll you. On top of that, the type of work my unions do is very much seasonal so you're not even guaranteed employment throughout the year. At least that's how it is in my area.

@@Boblol126 where are you from? Bc what I’ve heard is that they are hurting for people to stay in the industry
@Boblol126
@Boblol126 4 күн бұрын
@@Monkey-boyo_0 Bay Area. I've heard the same but it boils down to what sector you're talking about. For instance, around here, the nonunion service plumbing guys are pretty much always looking for competent workers while the union guys as I mentioned can afford to be picky because they have a large sway in the new construction sector.
@Monkey-boyo_0
@Monkey-boyo_0 4 күн бұрын
@@Boblol126 that blows bc it probably mean you’d need to go to school for it while working for nonunion to actually get a firm understanding of the trade if you want to start your own business/company

Just started my 1st electrician job in commercial. There won’t be hours of work for the 4th of July and the following day. Any advice on what I can do to improve from here?

I'm a first year union electrician apprentice. The contractor that I work for is on a 4 - 10 hour schedule. We got July 4th off. It's a four day weekend for us. Most of my classmates are working a 48-60 hour work week. Paycheck is nice, some get copper scraps worth hundreds, but they got no time to spend it. 😂 I'm going scuba diving this weekend and the next. Going to get my scuba diving certification on my free time.
