I don’t know that. Any city with declining revenues and increasing costs for even basic things like fuel and asphalt will find it harder to service their population the way they once did. It’s very likely in my experience that some homeowner has a crushed culvert drain pipe under their driveway that is causing a lot of backups and they are either waiting for the government to fix it because they aren’t legally allowed to do it themselves or because they also can’t afford to fix it. This is where people need to pull together and fix their own problems.

This is 3rd time I've seen this story recently, including the Guardian UK. I live in nearby St. Louis and work for the sewer district there. The reporting on this is terrible. In the first few seconds the reporter says "geography is not the problem." That absolutely is part of the problem. Centreville, and many other St. Louis suburbs, were built in low lying areas with poor drainage. This is a nightmare for designing sewer and storm water systems that need to drain downhill. You end up needing pump systems, which need constant maintenance. It looks like no one has been maintaining this system and now it needs to be replaced entirely. I don't know how these things are funded in Centreville, but they are generally paid for by the people who live in the area effected, either through a rate paid to the utility or taxes, maybe a bond issue. But even after it's replaced it will need to be maintained. This is not a $1M job. I don't know the extent of problems there, but I can tell you in nearby St. Louis $1M doesn't go very far. Please reporters, next time talk to some civil engineers, talk to someone from MSD in St. Louis to get some actual knowledge instead of just saying "oh this a majority Black community, so that's no one will help." That might be part of the story, but it will not be enough to get the situation fixed.
@dexdigi3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm the reporter in this piece. Right after I mentioned that the issue isn't the geography - because, as you mentioned, there are other places in low-lying areas that are doing better - I went into the 'drainage and sanitation systems, which are outdated and constantly overflowing' - which seems to agree with what you're saying here. And, I don't think anyone suggested that $1M would fix anything, nor did we suggest that even $22M would be a complete solution. And yes, we did talk to experts, including people who have worked on these same sewers - that just didn't make the cut, unfortunately. Anyway, I'm glad you gave our video a watch, even if it didn't hit the mark for you. If you've got a more detailed analysis that you've posted anywhere, or if you're able to hop in the car for the ~20 minute drive and give things a look over and post a video showing your own findings, I'd love to see your take! I'd be happy to tweet it out to give people an extra perspective.
@stevevalli64253 жыл бұрын
@@dexdigi Hey full respect for your profession. I sincerely apologize for calling the reporting "terrible". Not cool. If you talked to some experts I would be very interested to hear that part of the story. Did you talk to any engineering firms? Or other utilities? I know that part of the story is not sexy, and so probably why it got cut. But that's the story! Cut it back in! That's what KZbin is all about. Take as much time as you need. But I'm sure you have constraints in what you can do with this. To me, a sewer guy, that's what I need to hear. Who worked on this system? Who built it originally? Was it the Centerville public works department? Was it originally privately owned? What happened to the maintenance? Was someone originally performing the maintenance but then stopped at some point? Why? There are so many historical questions here that should be easy to answer. And that should provide some insight as to where things went wrong and how to fix it. I don't have a more detailed analysis, unfortunately. I would be willing to drive through and check it out, but I'm sure better people have already done this. I really just have the questions mentioned above, as I'm sure you do too. Again I apologize for calling this terrible reporting. Completely out of line. Did not mean to call you out personally, although I did do it on your video. The Guardian and St. Louis Post-Dispatch have recently reported on this as well and I had the same problems.

I sent a polite but firm email to the mayor of the city, if this video effected you emotionally I would urge you all to do the same. Please don't be vile though, or the officials responsible won't take the outreach seriously.

Those ladies blaming the sewages not being repaired on racism, but the mayor that doesn't do anything according to them, is a black Democrat. And those ladies most def voted for him.

We should've never built any towns in low laying areas but since we have we need to take care of these towns. And obviously these officials aren't. We need to keep pushing for these changes so we can live a normal life in these types of towns. And I hope these people vote all these local officials out cause obviously they don't care and need to be kicked out.

Once again something that happens several times a year in rural Kentucky, makes news when it happens anywhere else in the country. We have the same types of drainage outside of downtown areas. It's very normal and just accepted as how it is here. My home we live in currently, we inherited from my grandmother in law and it floods every 5 years for the 60 years she lived here. Now it's more like every other year we have enough water buildup from the creek behind us that it destroys the yards and all out belongings.
@laurenjulia18773 жыл бұрын
And the snow in texas.. everything but the purposeful blackouts happen here every winter for decades. The systems are outdated and snow, ice, hail, and rain usually take the power out every couple months. And it usually takes 2 to 14 days for it to be restored in our tri county area. Rural kentucky has been exploited and now that the coal industry has sucked its supply dry, we're purposefully forgotten and overlooked.

This area needs a “waste water basin” basically a system that pumps flood waters into a big bathtub when it heavily rains. Water infrastructure is so important yet no one ever sees it. Yes they should be sued
