"The potential to move into this position." Actual Meaning: We already have an outside higher for this, but they can't start for at least another 2-3 months so we just want a temporary patsy before we bring in this new person at 2-4x your salary.

But the people they will interview externally for 90 days don’t have to prove themselves. And when one of them is selected instead of Veronica, they will make $20K more than Veronica and she will be expected to train that new manager, who will then give Veronica a lukewarm “meets expectations” review. You know it’s true; Veronica knows it, too.

My former employer had this weird rule where you got paid for the work that you did. If I covered for my manager because he was on vacation for 3 weeks, I would get the same pay as he did for those 3 weeks. It was only because I chose to retire early, or else I would be still working there.

In California, that would be considered a discretionary bonus. I would also have to go back and recalculate overtime pay for the new average regular rate of pay for the entire year. No accounting software supports that, so it would have to be done manually. Probably also have to amend all the previous quarter tax totals with the state and feds with number that don't match the accounting software. It's a good policy but California has made it way too difficult to implement.

Oh yes, the annual review... I (and others) would send back the annual review not filled in with the comment that 'waste of time doing this because we all know what the situation is'. Our manager's response was 'I know, but it's part of your contract'. We never filled in the review before the one-to-one with our manager but during the one-to-one session we'd figure out what upper management at HQ would want to read, fill that in as the employee and then our manager would fill in his bit. Of course, it never made any difference whatsoever but we carried on making our life easy for quite a few years like this. Yes, we had a damn good management team in our office.

Heres another way to handle this: "I will work as an acting manager, but if at the end of the period i do not gain the manager position, you can consier this my notice period." Years ago, I was subjected to the mandatory career planning discussion with my manager. It was mandated by Corporate. I asked: “Okay, what are the possibilities here at this company?” My manager replied: “Everything is possible.” So I threw out an answer; “Within the next three years, I’d like to see myself as . . . .” He replied “Well, perhaps, maybe, down the road, we could look at opportunities and possibilities . . .” Seriously, that was his answer. I asked: “If that’s not on the table, what might be?” His answer: “Anything.” So, I offered up another idea for my career development. He replied: “perhaps, maybe, down the road, we could look at opportunities and possibilities . . .” We went one more round of this circular, pointless discussion, before I tactfully brought it to an end.

Um, isn’t this how a lot of organizations work? It’s how the army worked. Usually before getting promoted to a Sergeant, a Specialist will serve as an acting Team Leader, which is normally supposed to be a Sergeant’s job, but people are always leaving so they are sometimes short on people of that rank for that position. So they make a Specialist step up and learn the job and then they eventually just promote them. And so on with every rank going forward. Even if Veronica proved herself at her job, that doesn’t mean she’ll do good at her manager’s job. This is a chance for her to learn her manager’s job and put it down on her resume. If she does well and this company doesn’t promote her, couldn’t she just start looking for another job and tell other employers how she did this managerial job and she could get hired as a manager with them? This attitude here just seems like she’ll forever be stuck at her position. And I’ve seen those other videos of her reacting when the company just fires her. Or her apartment decides to not renew her lease because she doesn’t earn as much as they like and they want to increase the rent because they know other people can afford it.
