The reason I struggle to label Lionel Messi as the GOAT (me and a lot of people, including experts) is because everything he does looks so simple, yet it's flawless. His ability to sprint with the ball seemingly glued to his feet appears almost trivial, yet it’s nearly impossible for defenders to tackle him or for goalkeepers to anticipate when he’ll strike. Messi may not have been as magical as Ronaldinho or as universally brilliant as Pelé-nowhere near, in fact. But the way he performed those basic skills with near-perfection is something we may never see again. He was probably the most efficient player to ever grace the pitch.

Ferguson made a joke of a tactical setup in both finals. You cant open up against prime Barcelona, but he did. We all saw what happened next. And no, he was not a dogmatic coach who only went for "attack, attack, attack". He played on the counter in many games. So why not in those finals? It is indeed quite odd. Specially after Hiddink and Mourinho showed how to play effectively and win against them.

I think the win over Barcelona 2008 made him think that they were simply manageable. He still had his world-class players in the squad and the reigning Ballon d'or winner. But Pep giving Messi the freedom he needed along with relentless pressure, movements and passing in midfield was what Barcelona needed to win. For 2011 I'll admit I have no idea how SAF got it so wrong. He got completely outplayed.

@@SombreroFlicks Eto'o won that 2009 game. Not Messi. Sadly it all had to be Messi because of the big business showtime crap but it was Eto'o who unlocked the match. After that, the midfield just took the ball and hid it from United. The second goal was a huge distraction from center backs and keeper.

Just like Eto'o's movements helped with the 2nd goal, Messi intentionally drove Iniesta's marker away with his movement to allow for the space to dribble forward and find Eto'o in the box. Messi shouldn't be getting all the credit but you make it sounds like he wasn't even important in that game. :)

Yet everyone speaks of Messi as MOTM because two elite defenders allowed him to score a header, alone, in an already decided match.
