Yeah, Pro tip: if you're a manager and you treat an employee like shit, and then that employee becomes higher ranking than you...don't go back to treating them like shit because then it's their words against yours and they might have evidence, and even not, I feel like a "Chief of Staff" would have authority to fire you.

OMFG! The Inept manager story was a part of one my long form answers exam on HR when I was studying Marketing. I can't believe this story brought this memory back. And the goal was to explain as an HR director on how we'd handle the situation with just the basic premise of him laying a complaint over her getting the office and him getting kicked out of it.

@@ClonedGamer001 Most probably yes. The exam is based on a very well known and very old case that happened at IBM. The original case was like this: On a floor dedicated to filing for the whole building, next to one another, there's 2 enclosed areas: one is an office with a door, the other a kitchenette. The floor manager has the corner office and then the cubicles are occupied with mostly female employees who do the filing on typewriters. A high seniority employee, developed health problems: Mobility issues and wrist problems. Now, that employee is a critical employee due to her seniority, what she knows and her clearances. She gets accommodated into the corner office as it has the largest cubic area and gives her more space for her wheelchair. She also gets upgraded to using a computer.(dates the case) Now, the complaints that HR received were about: 1- The manager requesting that her office be installed in the kitchenette, as it is undignified, that a glorified secretary has a better office than a floor manager. 2- Another employee complained that it was unfair that she was getting access to a computer while they were forced to continue working on outdated typewriters and requests to have one.

@Gamer001 I don't know if she twisted an already existing case to make her story or not but it was about a real case that happened at IBM in the late 80's and the start of the case was this. On a floor with a corner office, a kitchenette and office cubicles. The floor covered corporate filings. Then an employee developed health problems leading to mobility and wrist problems. As her seniority lead to making her integral to the division and the company due to her knowledge of the inner workings of the company. So they decided to give her the corner office as it was the most for her mobility problems and an office computer to alleviate her physical strain. This kicked off a set of complaints, the two main one being: The manager complained that it was inadmissible that he was loosing his office to what amounted to a glorified secretary. And the solution should of been to place her office in the kitchenette. A female employee complained that it was unfair that they didn't also get access to a computer. That they should also get their typewriters replaced with computers.

8:52 I understand narcissistic abuse from a parent, unfortunately. My mother was narcissistic. I had no idea that was what it was called...and even ended up marrying a narcissist. I learned a LOT when my mother passed away. Things I didn't necessarily want to believe, but it was one of those things where it's right there and you can't deny it. I then realized what was happening to me and in my marriage. I knew how he was wasn't right, but I didn't attribute it to what it really was. After growing up with a mother who was very similar (but without the physical abuse), I thought this was normal. Gaslighting is actually a thing, and I learned that's something he was doing and something my mother had always done. NGL, it was trauma that definitely causes me to handle things or react to things in certain ways now. I've started therapy, almost 7 years after my divorce and 9 years since my mother passed, but it's a slow-going process. I don't trust people, so it's extremely hard for me to open up to a complete stranger. My mother, and subsequently my (now ex-) husband, had their ways of making me feel weak. Crying was a weakness, and they both took the chance to degrade me further for any emotions other than giving in to their nasty ways/comments/demands. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get through it fully and heal, although I know it's going to take some time. I hope the person in this story is able to start healing appropriately and can go through the rest of his life without feeling like he does, because I know how that shit feels. It hits you deep in your soul. Something that latches on and feeds off your happiness, causing you to go into these months long depressions that make you feel worse because you know you need to do A, B, and/or C, but you have little energy and you're barely taking care of yourself because your energy is spent making sure the tiny humans in your life still receive the same care, love, and energy as before.
