A "war on joy" ...it's hard to even conceptualize what this would feel like. You make such a great point about how when joy is restricted, so is our essential coping mechanisms for the hardest experiences in life. I truly believe that joy is resistance...it has saved me time and time again.... and I thank you for reminding us of that! Reminding us how expression and the choice/ability to savor is revolutionary. Joy is care. And as Audre Lorde says.. "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." Loved this talk! 🔥 ❤️ 🐐 💃🏿 🎉

Thank you, Ari. I deeply resonate with your work in spreading savoring pleasant moments and joy as a healing tool and a way through trauma. Joy & sharing joy saved my life. As a Narrative Therapy Practitioner & Storyteller and survivor of abuse who works with survivors of abuse and trauma, I've personally & professionally lived how joy and savoring pleasant moments can heal and through neuroplasticity rewire our brains. Thank you again!

This is such a thought-provoking invitation: Let us practice and become well-versed at summoning joy. And as we engage in savoring joyful moments, we can then allow ourselves to be more present with suffering-so we are not denying either. We are present in ourselves and with others. And with the awareness that the oppressive forces mentioned are not isolated to the Iranian regime, but present themselves in many forms. Let us resist with savoring. Thank you.

Ari has done such an amazing job of educating us not only about the plight of Iranian woman who must face the morality police but also of allowing us to see this outward expression as a reflection of what might be happening inside of us. Are we reigning in joy because we are listening to our own "morality police"? I appreciate, too, her drawing attention to the "negativity bias" we harbor. A zen teacher once said something similar. He said, "We are wired to suffer". It takes courage and focus to draw attention away from the mind's propensity to find only problems and instead notice all the tiny little moments of delight that we feel. Delight may feel like an inappropriate feeling when we see so much suffering in the world, but as Ari demonstrates here in her work with refugee children, feeling our own delight and helping others tune into whatever pockets of joy are available helps all of us develop the resilience needed to heal--to change our focus from negativity and fear to connection and joy. And, we don't have to swing the pendulum over to "toxic positivism." When we look closely, we discover that a moment of delight is simply the experience of being completely present in the moment, attuned to the senses, noticing, noticing the vibrancy of life itself. It does not require us to adopt a positive mindset. Thank you Ari for this powerful interwoven talk that brings us from outward atrocities to the joyful heart of life. As I sit here, I allow myself for five seconds to feel this joy, to allow an "inner smile" to pulse from my heart outward and upward, reaching my cheeks, reaching you.

So well put! We are wired to suffer but we can rewire ourselves to transform the suffering too. I had to look up "inner smile meditation" that I'm going to start practicing. Thanks for the introduction.

Growing up in Iran, we have so many practices to resist the oppression and strengthen our soul… we use any opportunity to dance, any opportunity that we can get together and forget the difficulties of life and restriction of living in Iran and dealing with morality police. instead we get together, we dance, we sing, we have mixed paries of men and women, we make wine and share it with friends… all of these are illigal in Iran because being joyful brings hope and the oppressive regime does not want that.
