Exactly. This is the thing dumb people don’t understand. Seat belts and air bags are not to prevent injury, they are there to prevent fatalities. It is quite common for people to break collar bones from seat belts or get a broken nose from an air bag BUT they are alive to tell the tale. Without these devices, the chance of death increase dramatically.

(sorry if the writing's a bit wonky, english isn't my first language) my father was in a pretty bad car crash back in 2010, it was my sister's 10th birthday and i was 7. car caught on fire and was left pretty much unrecognizable by the end of it, everything had to be scrapped. i still remember the very large red streak he had on the left side of his chest from the seatbelt. i remember it taking so long to go away. fortunately no one involved suffered lasting injuries from the accident but sometimes i catch myself thinking what could've happened if he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. i'd much rather see the scar it left on his chest now, 14 years later, than have to live the rest of my life without him. wear your seatbelts, everyone.

This is the best thing to take away from this video, and should have been talked about more. Not wearing your seatbelt is most likely gonna kill you in a serious crash. Wearing your seatbelt INCORRECTLY is gonna give you debilitating injuries. Wearing your seatbelt CORRECTLY is going to give you recoverable injuries. Seatbelt design seems pretty crude when you think about it. it's just a flat narrow strap that can be twisted and can slip from the intended position with ease. Given the force they apply on the body, they should have a larger surface area and have more than a single anchor point. But I guess a redesign won't happen because people are stupid and "only nerds care about lame stuff such as safety".

I have extensive training operating various vehicles being not only a CDL holder but also various professional services (LE/EMS). When I was taught to drive I was taught the triangle of death. Top of the triangle, cranial deceleration injuries (brain bleed), because of where the shoulder belt sits, a snapped clavicle can puncture the aorta causing you to bleed out internally. Lap Belts are usually safer because of the speed and force needed at impact to cause injury or abdominal laceration are crazy high. You actually learn how to drive and pay attention to what's around you (classes are out there) you'll see it all starts on how you position yourself in the seat. Seated appropriately, upright, left foot braced against the footwelll adjacent to the bottom of the a-pillar, right heel down between the pedals so yer foot doesn't leave the floor when driving you don't need belts.
