upgrading gear is always a good idea. When i wasn't playing guitar anymore because it became boring to me i bought myself a gibson, the guitar i always wanted, with a nice new amp. So i spend 1400 € but it was soo worth it. I started playing every day again and after 5 years i am still playing every day with the same gibson and the same amp.

This video was actually helpful! I was looking into some advice to "what to upgrade to" in terms of amplification, and there's a ton of "Amps for Beginners" videos, but not so much videos for mid-tier not-quite-professional amps. And this video does that! Thanks a bunch!

Orange and Marshall both make solid state amps that take pedals well. Orange even puts an effects loop on their Crush 35rt and above... Marshall's MG series from 2000- 2010 were particularly great with pedals (if you can find them). Have a MG15DFX from back in the day that pedals sound great on.

I am at the point of thinking of starting to add pedals, a tuner, looper(which should be last in line or in a loop), a drive, and a reverb or delay... along with that comes power and patch cables... The other option is somethong like a Headrush Gigboard.... Any input on the above would be much appreciated.... I'm also having me eye onnthe Crush 35RT, with it's small-ish size, but big and loud enough to keep me inspired a while, fx loop, etc... currently have a Marshal MG30CFX, and small Orange Crush 12... plan is to get some kimd of FX, and a second guitar , so I can play alomg with my kids, and we can learn together...

It's a general rule so he doesn't have to cover all the caveats. I have a vintage 1959 Fender Deluxe rated at 13W and with the EV SRO12 its louder than an AC15 since it will not breakup at any volume. There are always exceptions to the rule, so many that the video would run over 3 hours long just to cover a fraction of them. 20w is a good rule of thumb for tube amps and 35w, like the Crush combo, is a good rule for solid state.
@yargnad
@yargnad 5 жыл бұрын
@Ben Hackett Thats an awesome amp of course, but wont cut it for live gigs. I've use the AC4TV in the studio various times and it really shines for cranked up tones.
@bryand.5240
@bryand.5240 5 жыл бұрын
It also depends on the style of music and speaker paired with said amp, an ac15 is fine if you're playing in your bedroom or tiny gigs like at a cafe or something but anything bigger and you lose any headroom , I use my 6505MH for practice and sure it's a fun lil amp at practice, but for actual gigs there's no way that tiny 20W amp is going to be heard over a heavy handed drummer and so I use the big 120W 6505+
@yargnad
@yargnad 5 жыл бұрын
@@bryand.5240 And by headroom in this sense, @Bryan D likely means headroom of the venue, not to be confused with the clean headroom of an amp itself. If you play a tiny room, you can't get a loud amp setup how you'd like and not make ears bleed at the same time.

Solid state amps are notably cleaner than tube amps, and that is essential for the use of pedals and the main reason they work so well as a pedal platform. I have a 100w Peavey Wiggy plus the matching cab (look it up, cool as hell) and it excels for use with all my 50+ pedals.

This is the number one reason most new players give up. 80% of all new gear is sold to first time buyers that never stick with it and it ends up on the used market. A good feeling and easy playing guitar is the main determining factor in being able to progress and enjoy the learning process.

My mustang 1 v2 takes pedals well. If you turn it on while holding tap, it bypasses the preamp and is basically like plugging straight into an effects loop. There are some amazing solid state amps on the used market that are practically being given away. I advise everyone to pick one up as a backup if nothing else. Whilst I agree with what you said about amp wattage, and that 15-20w is usually the minimum you'd need to play live, pretty much all venues I've played at mic up the amps, and I've played on stage with a Marshall class 5 and it sounded great coz at 5 watts you can really crank it up. I also know a really good punk band that uses just a cheap 20-watt solid state amp and they sound great live.

Yeah man, Know Your Gear and you can get a decent sound out of anything really. But I have played gigs at venues with a PA and no sound guy. Dialing in live sound for the PA isn't as easy as it would seem since every room is acoustically different and you need to know its quirks and be familiar with the board. That's usually a tall order for the uninitiated.

I upgraded from the Fender Champion 20 to the Champion 100. Yes, the latter is a most excellent upgrade. You really get a lot for US$350: clean and drive channels, 16 amplifier voicings, 16 onboard effects for each channel, an effects loop, an AUX input, 2x12 speakers. Also a headphone out, usable for recording or silent practice. It's loud enough to be a starter gigging amp, if you're aiming to do that. I also run a Mooer GE100 multiFX pedal into the front -- that or something similar from Zoom/Nu.X/DigiTech is a great affordable option for a beginner/intermediate player trying out pedal effects.

Unless its pure analog modeling, like a Quilter, I would advise you to get a better amp. Like Robert said a crappy amp will always yield crappy tones, even with a good guitar, but a good amp will make a questionable sounding guitar sound much better. If you're satisfied with the tone of your amp then pedals are fun, but beware the rabbit hole where pedals lead. You'll end up with 50+ pedals once you've caught the bug. Not so say that is a bad thing, just be sure you're budget can swallow it.

Be careful with headphones, especially if they're closed back headphones or even worse ear buds. Blasting music directly into your ears, even at lower volumes, is far more damaging than standing in front of a moderately loud amp.

This is likely the exception and not the rule, but the new PRS MT15 is a wickedly loud amp through even a 1x12 for 15 watts. I play in an Iron Maiden tribute band, with a very heavy handed drummer, and I was able to keep up with him no issues while having my master volume below 9 oclock. Still had the headroom for me to put a boost pedal in the loop for solos.

Speaker efficiency will have a lot to do with this. I doubt you're playing that thru a cheap 112 cab. Having a good highly efficient speaker with the proper impedance for your amp goes a long way. 20w is just a good solid rule of thumb, not gospel.

Hai Robert, I play guitar now for like 6 years and play songs like green tinted sixties minds by Paul Gilbert and Lenny by SRV. I play on my Yamaha Pacifica trough a roland Cube. I've been saving up money for a while and started thinking about upgrading my gear. I started thinking of buying an amerian professional strat. Even though I feel a big difference between my yamaha and the fender, I do hesitate ALOT. Do you have some advice? Greetings from The netherlands😄

If you're hesitating for any reason you might want to keep looking until to find the guitar that makes you want to pull the trigger without hesitation. I am a Fender guy, through and through, but I know they're not for everyone and you should find the guitar that is right for you. Maybe try a Charvel, you can convincingly do both Gilbert and SRV on a super strat.

I would also like to add that a lot of these “practice” amps are let down by their crappy speaker. Usually a 6-8” junker. I took a Squier Sidekick practice amp and made a little head out of it and it sounds fantastic through 2 fender AlNiCo 10”.

@@haveadrumbeat The Boss DS 2 is not a good example to test whether or not the amp takes pedals well. Use some heavy fuzz pedal or high quality boost pedal. Katana 100 has me selling my 5150. The 5150 is better. But the Katana can get close to the 5150 sound and the 100 watts is enough to hang with anything volume wise. I've had marshalls, Peaveys, Crates, Fenders, Randalls, an EVH, and Mesas.... and It's more a snob thing than actually NEEDING an amazing Amp. The Katana is good enough. I know it's not the same concept but you can basically look at it as the budget Kemper.

Although Marshall purists like to poo poo on solid state options, those amps get a nice clean sound and offer the classic Marshall midrange grind that many are accustomed to. Its not quite as nice as the tube versions, but they hold their own. Go check out Dave Simpson on YT, he loves solid state Marshalls more than anything and he even has tube amps as well. And he is a pretty good guitarist to boot.

I think the boss katana 50 might also be in interest to you, it's about $220 and it sounds like a tube amp if you download some presets online, but if you ever plan on using pedals like a looper, external reverb and delay (you probably won't because the katana has some amazing sounding reverb and delay), or even some overdrive or distortion pedals, I'd recommend getting the katana 100 ($360) because it has an FX loop, on top of things like a larger cabinet, and some better knobs

@yargnad 5 жыл бұрын
You most certainly do need a new amp. Not to dog on your Spider, they're great for beginners to get started but you soon learn the limitations and when you play a true analog solid state or a tube amp it really opens your eyes/ears to the way an amp should sound, and more importantly, feel. Real amps feedback to your guitar, almost literally bringing it to life in your hands, causing it to resonate like almost no digital amp really can (minus Bias and Kemper @ $1k+). This is the best part about playing guitar and you will notice how much better you can play in this scenario.

@@ianmiller4195 Check out Craigslist and you'll find plenty. Many people are, unwisely IMO, eschewing tube amps in favor of digital modelers and software, which will eventually be obsolete for the intended purposes for which they were built. The Peavey Valve King line is very affordable, the Bugera V22 is decent as well, and sometimes you can find a good deal on a small Fender like a Pro Jr.

also, depending on how tech savvy you are, it might be worth looking into vsts, so plugins, first. It doesn't have the immediate satisfaction of plug into an real amp with just three knobs and immediately begin to rock, because you have to start a program first and depending on the set-up of your computer speakers it might suck anyways ... buuuuut I found that the inexpensive, accessable way was great for schooling my ears for the differences between the sounds of amps and speakers, so I could then even begin to make an informed decision what kind of tubesound I wanted in my life. It does not substitute a cranked jcm800 into a 1960 4x12, but it thought me why I needed one in my life. There are great free preamp plugins out there, assuming that nowadays aspiring guitarists probably don't feel half as overwhelmed by the way the software works like the oldfarts like me did 10 years ago.
