I'm in the exact same situation as Marie. I've been in a beautiful and loving relationship for 10 months but we haven't said ILU yet. I think he shows me through his actions, quality time, and physical touch that he cares very much but he isn't using words of affirmation. This is my love language though and i've been meaning to say the sweet words for a while now but didn't want to rush things. He's very slow, but consistent with me too. Tonight though i said i had feelings for him and he didn't say it back but looked nervous and flustered. I will give him time hoping he'll find the courage to say it back to me soon. Hi Susan, well said. I think saying "I love You" is assuring. But actions will convey feelings much better. In certain circumstances saying the magic words may allow you to open up and express yourself better, now that the 'cats out of the bag". I remember I girl I dated and never told her that I loved her. I cried profusely when she dumped me. And cried hours more when I got back home. At the time I thought that our relationship could never work out, she had some serious personal issues. Still today after many years I still have some feelings for her.

Also different people have different love languages. My aunt when she was in her early 20s had been dating a slightly younger man and his love language definitely was not Words of Affirmation. Their first fight which ended in a breakup (for a couple of weeks haha) went along the lines of "you never say you love me" "I thought it was obvious that I do" etc. This gentleman may express his love through acts of service, quality time etc. whereas the lady may be a words of affirmation person. If that is the case, then she needs to communicate it.

I am 34, dating a 54 year old woman who divorced 10 years ago from an unfaithful husband. Although she would never admit it, I can still see a lot of hurt from what she went through. I said it first and he didnt say it back. I was patient and about a month later he finally said it. I was patient and kind and saw in nis actions he was showing it but not saying it. If actions dont show it and he doesnt say it its not there.

Im skeptical to say it because what does it really mean? It's fluid...people fall in and out of love all the time. Are you happy? Yes or no? Than what else actually matters? While reading each their book on the balcony during the Corona lockdown, I spontaneously told my 16 - years younger flatmate/lover, that I love him very much. He made me repeat it three times (intentionally or not) and then he told me, that he loves me too. I then said nothing, continued to read and 3 min later went to finish my baking. By mistake I did close the door so that he couldn't get in the next 15 minutes :) our ways parted as planed since then but I still recall this occasion in to my mind with smile on my face. It was so profound, easy, natural and deep experience that is capable to shake us up to call us to our true self of loving human beings. Susan, wow! What a bombshell of an answer you gave to this question about timing and telling someone you love them. Here are my thoughts: Without first taking the time to know him/her, how can you expect to love or be loved in a meaningful way? And therein is the answer: (know him/her) before you give yourself permission to open up for love. Unfortunately many people confuse repeated physical satisfaction with the same partner to mean love. Wrong!!! Let me repeat that again. WRONG!!! If real communication doesn't take place between the two individuals; it will spell "into-the-blender" for your emotional feelings. Dear, you did say, "personally" you are willing to put it out there. No harm no foul. Q. What's the success rate for that approach?
