Sigh. This all reminds me of my mother--who was not a gardener. I had just learned that green beans, especially the young ones, are delicious raw and fresh off the plant. She was visiting one day and thought she needed to take the green bean in and wash it first. I insisted she eat one unwashed, but it's so sad when a person has phobias like that.

When I was little we had an organic garden and going down the pea row harvesting, my dad would let us shuck and eat as much as we wanted. It was joy. I never ate that many because I had a pretty horrible abusive life and it felt to me that if I had more than a little joy something horrible would happen. But still, I had that joy. As much as I loved (and love) it when the edible pods started showing up in the US, there's still something magical to me about shucking and old fashioned pea pod and eating the peas. Joy still fills me with fear and anxiety though in my sixties:( I know I'm worth it though. _That's_ a change.

I was surprised at how little he is. Usually he's framed up in the camera and looks as big as anyone, but when dad was calling him over to share the ground cherry, he was tiny! Just a little kid. I hope he never loses his love for the garden (well if he loses it for a bit when he's a teen and thinks he needs to know better than his parents he'll come back to it because of good roots and because a garden is such a refuge).

Winter squash are my favorite thing to grow because they ramble so much! There are varieties that absolutely will not produce here, but the ones that will are a blessing. I pull pumpkins when they get their color, making sure they have a few inches of stem and let them cure in the sun for a week or until the stem dries. They keep for a year and it allows the plants to make more before fall. So smart with the ground cherries! I love tomato season, too! I love when you say "I grew this!" I said that so many times earlier this season (I'm in zone 8b so it's too hot right now). My husband was amused with my joy from eating food I grew

A few years ago I grew so many tomatoes I went two years without buying a single one at the grocery. I've planted a ton this year and am just starting to see blushing in Virginia. Now it's a battle to the death with the critters!

What a PRECIOUS child Ben is! Hold on tight cause he will shoot up like that Armenian cucumber and be grown. I love your channel and love all things gardening. Family is so important and to have them happy and healthy is so special. The difference a day can make is so dramatically important in your garden...maybe you could harvest early and nightfall??? Stay HAPPY 😍🥰🙂😀❤️
