Kemal vegeta No, his casualty numbers are pretty accurate if he used the same source that I presume you did [wikipedia] and exclusively from the battle [September 12th] and not the siege regarding the ottomans, where their numbers were reduced from 170,000 initially to 140,000 at the time of the September 12th battle, automatically implying they took a number of losses [~20,000] prior September 12th since the siege began in mid July.... Keep in mind that these numbers are only rough estimates, to begin with, and so it appears disingenuous to try and nitpick the exact numbers while only using wikipedia numbers and throwing in a profanity for good measure; furthermore, he never said that the 12,000 defender casualties were excIusiveIy "civilians" but did mention that civilians were IikeIy counted within that number since, as you should know, civilians become "soldiers" very quickly in such desperate situations.

Tolkien was told by a relative that this Hohenzollern led a raid against the turks and captured the sultan's banner, for which he was dubbed Tollkühn, meaning "Fool-hardy", and thus the origin of Tolkien's family name.

Awesome video! I especially appreciate how You went into details about the organization and equipment of the husaria (and using that term, as well as other Polish ones!). A thing about the wings though: modern researchers such as Radosław Sikora pretty much disproved all the theories about their practical roles beside looking cool, and they could also be strapped to the saddle, or even not put on at all (especially in the battle or a march vs. a parade), also paradoxically the inspiration for husaria's wings came probably from the Turkish deli cavalry. I also like how you briefly mentioned that there were some Tatars fighting in the Polish-Lithuanian army. If anyone wonders - yep, they were Muslim. History is usually far more complicated than we expect when we look at it closely.

@Artur_M.6 жыл бұрын
Saoirse del Tufo Well, Ottoman sultans actually did claim to be Caliphs. How much did that claims meant to the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar community? I honestly don't know. Just for clarification - we are talking about the so-called Lipka Tatars, who settled in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since the end of 14th cent. (so in the same period it entered the union with Polish Crown). They enjoyed religious freedom and special legal status, with many families being recognized as part of the nobility, in exchange serving as the light cavalry. Meanwhile their Tatar brethren from the Crimean Khanate - Ottoman vassal state - were pretty much a constant threat for Poland-Lithuania raiding its south-eastern Ukrainian provinces for slaves even in times of peace and official good relations between Poland and the Sublime Porte. Getting back to the Lipka Tatars and their relation to the Ottomans - there is an interesting document from 1558 “Risâle-i Tatar-i Leh” (Polish Tatar Account), a description of the Lipka community for Ottoman court by its representatives visiting Constantinople while on the hajj. It does suggest that Lipka Tatars recognized Sultan's caliphal religious authority, but this source was technically written down by the Ottoman court scribes, so it's debatable how credible and representative it is. In 1672, during an Ottoman invasion on Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, there was a major incident of Polish Tatar troops defecting to the Ottoman side, but it was at least partially motivated by their wages being delayed and cut (while the famous climate of religious tolerance in PLC kinda started decline at this time). Even then most of them eventually turned back to the Polish side, when offered amnesty and confirmation of their freedoms and privileges.

An Interesting fact: the word "Hussar" has entered the Polish language via Hungarian but in it's origin it is a South Slavic word and the actual translation would mean "pirate". South Slavs still to this day use the word Gusar for pirates. Anyway. After the fall of Belgrade during the 15/16 century. Most of Serbian nobles and knights moved to Hungary and offered their services to Hungarian king mainly against Ottoman threat. Since Hungary was the last fortress of christian Europe at that point. They were mostly orginized in two types of irregular of units : Šajkaši (the river navy that used small fast boats, perfect for quick confusing attacks and deversions around Danube, similar to piratesand privateers) from which derived the Gusari ( they would later end up to be a fast light cavalry as the war progressed deeper in Panonian plane). This type of cavalry would later spread during the 16/17 century to Poland, Prussia, Russia and elsewhere, since it was perfect for confronting Ottoman and Tatar armies in the wast planes of the Eastern Europe. But the west only heard about Hussars after the legendary Polish winged Hussars crushed imperial Ottoman force at the gates of Vienna.
@HCforLife16 жыл бұрын
That's true. The origin of this unit in Poland comes from Balkans. But there is one difference. The hussars been formed actually in XVI century in Poland. And later reformed. After reform The husaria unit was later extremely elite. Anyone who would try to sell technology of creating lances (6m long) or trying selling horses (the horses were special polish breed which unfortunately already extincted :/ ) would be sentenced to death. All know-how was under that acts. There was not any unit similar to them that time. All been developed by polish-lithuanian commonwealth. But everyone should now that origins comes from Balkans :)
@tamaszlav6 жыл бұрын
@@HCforLife1 It's actually kind of wrong, the word is an original Hungarian word (húsz = 20). It's true, the original huszárs were south Slavs in the HUngarian army, but the word it self is 100% Hungarian. Except for the last 2 letters, "ar" is probably Turkic..

I'm very impressed with your Polish pronunciation Hilbert, but you made some mistakes regarding to the meaning of those words nonetheless. Well, even such a great work as this video isn't without it's flaws. For one "poczet" does not mean "lance" in the literal sense, but only as a military unit - a knight (or husarz) with his retinue of two or three people. The Polish word for lance as a weapon is "kopia". The word "chorągiew" also literally means "banner". "Bandolet" on the other hand is more of a long pistol than a full-fledged arquebus, which in Polish is called simply "arkebuz".

Minor correction: You still mention the Janissaries as "elite" troops, but at that point in time they really weren't :/ Not to say anything about their corruption, they at this point were a lot less disciplined and armed than their european counterparts. They had long lost their superority.

Janissaries started becoming less professional after the 1700s
@ardaaslan19236 жыл бұрын
@@foughtstatue1023 No they had already lost their power beginning from 17th century. After seeing the irregularity and disobedience among the Janissary troops during his campaign of Poland in 1621, Sultan Osman II decided to replace Janissaries with the Sekban army as the main infantry unit. That's why Janissaries for the first time in Ottoman history dethroned a Sultan and killed him. Later Murad IV tried to control janissaries and was actually successful for a certain period thanks to his cruel control but when he died in 1640, Janissaries became totally useless and only focused on politics rather than battle.

A month ago i was in Vienna and i visited the Museum of Military History. In one of the halls they had a massive painting about that battle and there was also a small map with all the units that fought in the battle. You definitely have to visit it, if you haven't already

There is an interesting person in this story and his name was Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki. He was a polish nobleman and trader. He was the one who delivered the message about the rescue to the city what prevented the city's capitulation. He knew Turkish thanks to his experience as a merchant. Due to his crucial role in victory the king allowed him to be first to chose the loot from Turkish camp. And he took all coffee storage. Everyone thought that it was camel's forage so none protest. Later he opened the first cafe in Vienna and in all of the West.

The Hussars were the most heavily armed Calvary in history too. Lance, Estoc, Hammer, Sabre and pistols depending on their fancy.

They carried a very long heavy lance. Supposedly a Hussar skewered five Turks during a single charge with his lance.

That's great that you didn't forget about our Tatars ;) For Poland-Lithuania fought our tatars (That live even now on our lands) They told on this time a really great thing. I can't rememer it exactly but it was like " We will never join Crimean Tatars that fight on Ottoman site. They choosed the way of bandit life and lost their way. We can not call them brothers anymore." That's the greatest proof of being our people :)

The Ottomans faced the Alps to the west and the Carpathian mountains to their northeast. Vienna guarded the pass between the two mountain ranges. If they had taken Vienna, they could have gone north into Germany then west into France and taken all of Europe.
@apotato62785 жыл бұрын
Well let's not get ahead of ourselves. In the west were the British, the French and the Spanish empire. To the north laid the cold, barren lands of Scandinavia ruled by the legendarily ferocious Carolean kings and their elite armies. To the east laid the Russian empire. Maybe the ottomans could have pushed further into Germany but after that they would have without a doubt been stopped
