I have a BFA in ceramics - the best thing a teacher ever did for us/me was have us make 50 bowls, and then when we presented them for evaluation (before we fired them), he surprised us and had us smash 45+ on the wall. Ceramics is an art form where a lot of things don’t go according to plan, and that first week or two was a great intro to what to expect. As time went on, it became very normal to cut pieces in half to see how well thrown they were, and to not get too invested in each piece because each firing can go an incredible number of directions. I ended up winning juried shows, showing in galleries, and making things I am really proud of, but that first intro into accepting failure/loss/editing was really helpful as a life lesson in art and in general.

Dear Dalia, how I love your storytelling! I feel like we (you and us) have moved from DIY Dalia - purely DIY content to DIY Dalia where DIY is a more holistic/all-encompassing concept, a shared experience into actually living life. And isn't life the ultimate DIY? :) Thank you so much for sharing your life experience with us. What you say, especially about not letting external validators define you, your worth or your values resonate so much with me. I cannot express how grateful I am for you.❤

You inspire me!! I am way way older than you, but can I just tell you that your videos speak to me and just make me feel like I am not alone in my feelings. I have a wonderful husband and daughter and extended family. There is love all around!! But your content and the things that you talk about go straight to my heart. You are a beautiful young lady and I only pray that I instill the qualities and thoughts that you have in my daughter. So simply Thank you and please keep doing what you are doing!! Much love from Birmingham Alabama!!!

Your last statement alone is why I subscribed. Besides your talent. I don’t even like being on KZbin much. But I needed some inspiration. I’ve been with out a home for a long time, and my kids let me turn an old shop into an apartment on their property. At 57 and widowed, I need all the help I can get. So thanks. And yeah, it took a long time for me to be okay with who and where I am. Im good. Life is good and when it’s not, that’s okay too.

The ceramic pieces are really great. You are wrong about everything you think isn’t right about them (except maybe the cracked handles, which is a bummer), they’re all lovely and nothing looks dirty. The bowl with the hearts may be my favorite piece. As someone who is super hard on themselves, I’ll say to you what I never say to myself: give yourself grace. You are really talented and this was no exception.

Pottery is a process and you did really well. My ceramics professor used to tell us that we had to work with the clay and never against it. It's not all about the final product, it's about enjoying the process. If you're using any of your vessels for food or drink, just make sure it's high fire clay and glaze. My personal favorites were darker clays because of the earthier tones and the high fire glazes can be so earthy and beautiful. If the cracks by the handles weren't there after the bisque fire, it might just be the glaze that cracked durian the last firing. For the inside of the bowls, try a little bit more glaze in the bottom center because it looks like it's just the clay peeking through.oh yeah, and the vessels will always shrink once fired.

Love your work Dalia. The way you humanize the DIY experience is wonderfully non-judgmental and brings a sense of excitement to realistically explore and just give it a go. I imagine all DIYers, including myself, have underestimated the amount of experience it takes for an artisan to achieve their beautiful works we aspire to. It can be disappointing, like Dalia shared in this video, but part of the DIYer charm is that we don't let it dissuade us from giving it a go the next time we dream about making something. I've seen on this channel Dalia achieve amazing DIYs and they have not been without their hiccups and learning curves along the way. One of the main reasons I love this channel is because it isn't the fake glossed over version of DIY. Keepin' it real is part of Dalia's charm❣

Welcome back!! Yes, happiness comes from within. Do, say, and feel whatever it is you want. Don't mind all the others around you. Most of the time people are unhappy in their own lives and like to spread that misery. U be u and people that love you for who you are will stick around! :) Glad to hear you are in the moment. That is very important.

On a very similar journey to contentment. I went back to work after being unemployed for 2 years. The new job was something that I didn’t enjoy, but had years of experience. I found myself in another rut and was so bored and uninspired. I felt so out of place. I think the universe has a way of bringing things to light because I was laid off within 3 months of my start date. I’m now going back to what I started a year ago, which was launching my Etsy shop. I feel anxious, but excited that I get to build the creative life I’ve always wanted. All my fears are coming to the forefront and it’s terrifying! Watching your videos, especially these very insightful videos, gives me a sense of hope and reminds me that nobody is holding me to these standards/timelines but myself. That you can overcome self-doubt and live in a way that is authentic to you. 💕 it’s been a couple months since I’ve watched your videos (very unlike me 😅) and currently binging! As always, thanks for sharing, Dalia! You give me the courage to be braver. 🫶🏼

Glad and relieved you're okay. As I was watching this video I felt like I was kinda bracing for bad news. Like some of the others said, I noticed your absence and I even checked your IG. But everyone needs a break sometime. I think a lot of us who watched your content regularly love you for you. Social media can both bring us together and also be toxic at times. I feel like your instructor/s should have prepared you to expect this. Honestly if I had paid for 4 lessons and they didn't even tell me things would shrink or that glazes don't turn out exactly how you'd expect.. I would ask for a refund or at least another 8hrs in there to make new things. And that's not to say I don't like what you made, because I really do think it's all beautiful and can be used in other ways even if not for the intended purpose if you choose. Like the mugs with unstable handles can be a pen jar or something, or even just for decoration.

dood....2 months radio silence from someone who was regularly posting kinda sucks. i know people were worried about you, i even looked up your name + obituary. some may say "you don't owe us anything" but i don't think it would have taken much effort to post an update (even just to say you were taking a break) on your community tab. glad you're okay.
@DIYDalia Жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry to have caused you worry. I know when people I have watched for a long time stop posting for an extend period of time I have also felt worried and that sucks. I wanted to give an update but also something just told me not to. I didn’t want to say something I couldn’t take back. And just taking a break wouldn’t have been accurate for me and how I felt in the midst of it. I wanted to express my truth when I landed on it with clarity and when my gut said ya ok it’s time. And before then it just wasn’t the right time for me. I know it seems simple to give an update but there are intricacies behind the scenes.
