Hi Michele, I’m so happy I’ve found your channel ❤ Your “kindness and love” attitude to training a puppy is just what I do too 🥰 My 15 week old Cavoodle, Ruby is doing so well with the help and confirmation of your techniques ❤ A few years ago my 17 ½ year old long-coated chihuahua passed away, and he had dreadful separation anxiety. Luckily I don’t work , so he was able to come with me to most places. But it was not a nice feeling knowing he was not being his best self 😢 Now that Ruby is part of the family, I’m determined to build confidence in her (although she already has that in spades). The puppy camera I bought was the best $100 I’ve spent, as it allows me to keep an eye on her , even though I’m in the same room. I don’t have to get out of my chair to see what she’s up to. She can settle herself already. I’ve been going into the bathroom alone and Ruby has been contented to stay in her play area too. We got her home at 8 weeks, and built up to where she’s at today. Using your training methods, I’m so happy to say that Ruby is my Dream Puppy 😊 With thanks & best wishes from Julie Spratt, Australia 🇦🇺 ❤

When puppies are young you often have to find ways to meet their needs through pet sitters, dog walkers, etc. But once they are a little older and training has taken hold, you can leave them home alone for longer!

Hi Michele, great video, so much useful advice! I'm trying to build up my pup's resistance to crated napping on her own during the day (she's totally fine at night) but she'll wake up as soon as I try to leave the room...what steps can I take to do this?

Is it okay to be using a puppy pen as opposed to the crate? We are puppy pad training so I like for her to have access to a pad. Should I bring a crate into the pen? Thanks!

We do not recommend using a pen instead of a crate. The pen is for puppies who are awake. Unfortunately pee pads will teach your puppy to go potty on soft and squishy surfaces for a lifetime. You can put the crate in the pen if that works best for you.

Hi Michele! thanks for the video. were about to bring a 9 old week Corgi pup into our home. thing is we work from 7 a.m to 4 p.m. we bought a crate and toys for the pup and even an automatic food dispenser but we will have to leave for work and we can not take vacation. i will be able to return for 1 hour home for a play and stuff but other than that we want to have a happy pup as much as possible but with these restirctions. what should we do?

It is definitely possible to work full time when you have a puppy, but the first few months might take some creative problem solving on your part! As you can see from the sample schedule in the New Puppy Starter Kit, puppies have a lot of needs! Puppies can hold their bladder approximately an hour per month of age when they are resting, so you’ll have to arrange for someone to take him or her out for potty breaks. But puppies also have needs for human engagement, enrichment, mental and physical exercise and of course… cuddling! As they grow, they can be left home alone (always in the crate) for increasing periods when you are away at work. But for the first few months - even up to a year - you’ll need some additional help from friends or family to meet all of their needs. We have a great video on this topic!
