Bit late in the season for me but due to HOA I am replacing the SOD in half my yard due to original sod being dead when I moved in and never took last season. I ripped up all the grass and debris lying under the sand. I plan to put down a thinner layer of Black Kow on top of the sand and placing the SOD on that layer. The other half I plan to do your other tip of half black kow and half sand to do a top treatment to fill in some dead areas there. Thanks for all the information!

Thank you for the information that you just provided. I have a question. I have a saint Augustine lawn daylon. My namy neighbor drained his salt waterpool. My lawn is turning light green. Would I have to resod the lawn?

Probably not. It's showing chlorosis from stress. Add potassium and humic acid. After about two weeks. Give a light fertilization with 10 10 10. Once it starts growing, you will mow away the damage. It should recover.

Hi Chad thank you for your video. It has been 10 weeks since I laid new St. Augustine sod in north TX. It has started to turn brown in areas. Would you recommend I put a starter fertilizer on it now? Unfortunately I haven’t done anything to it yet. Wish I had found your video earlier and done a safe/mild fertilizer and insecticide earlier. Thanks!

I don't like the started fertilizer. I would a stress blend. Make sure the brown is not grey leaf spot fungus.

Hey Chadd, can you explain why no nitrogen or P when installing new sod? Also does it matter if you apply it to the soil beneath the sod or on top? Which is better? Thanks!

The soil underneath is the best. No N because it purposes heat when it realses and can burn the lawn. No need to add P. You want the grass to focus on the root system or the first 30 to 45 days. K is all you need for that.

The St Aug sod I laid down 3 weeks ago, I'm in the Jacksonville, FL area. Should I put some Scott's starter fertilizer to give it a kick. It just doesn't seem to be growing fast enough. The sod is rooted to the native soil.

I don't recommend that. You would be better using a 10 10 10 fertilizer.

Insay never even consider it before 30 days. After that, you can cut it once it starts to get tall.

@@bettercallchadd Ok. Today’s marks 2 full weeks since I laid sod. The whole lawn is doing great. Everything is green and growing. But it’s not growing consistently. Many places are already 5-6” tall. Many places are around 3”. Some less. This is why I ask. If I wait another 2 weeks some of this grass, like at least 1/3rd or more of the lawn, might be VERY tall. Still wait another 2 weeks?

I just got a pallet of St Augustine sod and majority of the pieces are brown and dark yellow. Is this acceptable? It looks no where near like the pallet of sod at Lowes/Home Depot the day they get a delivery. Their sod is dark green and looks healthy and you get a good feeling it's gonna live and thrive when you lay it down. The pallet that I got looks dead with very limited green blades here and there.

That's not acceptable. Never take bad sod. It needs to be in good shape to have the best chance of taking well.

Yes, every day. You only 15 to 25 minutes when the sod is new. After two weeks, switch to every other for 30 to 40 minutes.

Hello Sherry this was back in late April (prime time here in North Texas). I did take my time with the preparation process by prepping the soil in my opinion helped the sod to take faster. I would say to fully root, perhaps 4-5 weeks.

I was able to fire my fertilizer guy and save cuz of you. Thank u so much. Grass is looking good. Some bare spots... but overall its looking good. I need to top dress it and see how it does. Its only a year old. Figure it'll continue to fill in with proper care.
