Sorry to hear about that! There are 40 different pills and perhaps that pill had a progesterone your body didn't like. Talk to your doctor and try a different progesterone or perhaps progesterone only pill.

i heard you could gain a lot of weight when taking the pill for the first time. Since i'm someone who is quite sensitive to weight gain i wouldn't want this to be hard to get rid of. Yes. you can start your birth control pill on any day of your period. You just might have less breakthroughbleeding /spotting if you start on the last days of your period - like day 4-7. If you start on your period, theoretically it starts working within 24 hours. However, to be safe, we suggest you wait 1 week AFTER being on the pill to have vaginal sexual intercourse.

with the regular birth control pills (estrogen and progesterone) you can be late +/-5 hrs or more and you're OK. If progesterone only, if you are late by 3 hrs then you might need emergency contraception (if you had sex in the past 5 days) and to abstain or use condoms for the next 5 days.

Great questions. Yes with every method there is the chance for failure. With perfect use, the failure is 3/1000. With typical use, the failure is 9/100. If you combine condoms and pills, then much lower. It depends which birth control pill (regular versus progestin only) and when the woman is on her cycle. To be absolutely safe, best to wait 1 month on the pill. But theoretically, if a woman starts the pill on her period or within 5 days of the start of her period, then it should be effective within 1 day for combined pills and within 2 days for Progestin only pills. The greatest risk for breast cancer is immediately family e.g. mother, sister. Starting 5-10 years after you stop birth control pills, your risk of breast cancer goes back to baseline. If you are under 40 then the benefits if you are using it for pregnancy prevention outweigh the risks. At 40 or older, consider non hormonal contraception e.g. copper IUD, condoms, etc.

Since you haven't started going on the pill, you should take a pregnancy test. If you're interested in learning about the morning after pill, check out our video on that. In the meantime, try to "act" like you're pregnant. That means no smoking, no drinking, etc in case you are pregnant so that you don't harm the baby.

While some women prefer to take it first thing in the morning so that they won't forget, our doctor actually recommends you taking it at after dinner before you to go bed. Do birth control patches work with dysmenorrhea? I'm wanting birth control for really bad cramps but swallowing pills gives me anxiety. If not, are there ones that dissolve or are chewable? I want to avoid an IUD as much as possible.

Yes. they do. but we would recommend the ring. Check out more info here www.bedsider.org/methods/the_ring The patch works as well but the only negative on the patch is that it delivers higher estrogen than other pills and that puts you at risk of blood clots. It is better than nothing. Also, if you are NOT good at taking pills by mouth, you can take them intravaginally or you can also stick them in ice cream, yogurt, food, etc. they are really small. You could also consider the implant but 30% of women will continue to ovulate on the implant so that might not fix all of the dysmenorrhea. But most of the dysmenorrhea comes from amount of blood, and the implant, IUD, patch, shot, ring, pill ALL decrease the amount of blood you lose and thus, less cramping because less blood to get out. Pandia Health no no no. I can't have the ring. My anxiety is worse putting things into my vagina (which is why I only use pads). That's why I'm asking about patches NOTHING IN THE VAGINA.

Pandia Health I really don't think you've read my comment. I said I didn't want anything inter/intravaginally. That stuff gives me anxiety. I am not at risk for anything related to blood clotting so I'm gonna stick with the patch and go from there.

You should just continue taking 1 pill every 24 hrs. If you take more than 1 pill during 24 hours, that is ok. It's just might cause you nausea. If you want to stop the pills, you can stop at any time, just do not have sexual intercourse if you do not want to get pregnant, when you stop the pills.

Thanks Fjolla. Yes! you need to take the pill EVERY day and start BEFORE you have sex to protect against pregnancy. If you can't do that, then consider the IUD with hormone, the implant, shot, ring, patch, condoms or Emergency Contraception.

If you start the pill on your bleeding/period, then it should be effective within 2 days. If you start it not on your period, after 7days of medicaiton, you should be covered. However, to be absolutely safe, consider using a back up for 1 month.

Not sure your exact question. But if you start your pills one week after the last day of your period, you should use a BACK UP method (condom or abstain) for 1 month, just to be safe. If you start your pills, within 5 days of the 1st day of your period, then you should be covered BUT I would still use back up for 1-2 wks to be very very SAFE.
