I always do the side quests until I am forced to do the main quest and get an item or weapon that would have made the side quests way easier, almost trivial in hindsight. So the side quests giveth and they taketh away. But seriously I will attempt side quests multiple times just to complete them all before going back to the main quest.

The truth is that you have to bring the flowers first so that the old man heals and leaves the bed, and only then can he pick up the egg, if you take too long, the old man will die, the house will be closed forever and the quest will still be incomplete after finishing the main quest 🙂

Something even better happened in Fallout 4 for me. There was a quest given to me where I had to save this person's kidnapped sister who was being threatened as a hostage, and I didn't do it because I had some other stuff I was focusing on. Randomly as I was walking through the wasteland I got a message in the corner that said "Quest Failed: Save (Her name)." It took me a moment, then I realized what happened and was like WELL OOPS SORRY LADY I WAS BUSY DOING DEFINETLY IMPORTANT THINGS UHHHH

Little did he know, if he completes the grandpa's sidequest, he will puke out the 24th egg gem and a key to retrieve the most op weapon in-game. Failing to help the old man will unintentionally digest the egg and the key with his remaining lifeforce.

TES: Daggerfall did this, kinda. All their quests where time sensitive, so if you don't complete it then return to the quest giver before time runs out, you fail the quest and lose reputation with the quest giver's faction.
