An experiment to study the nature of gossip and ostracism suggests both serve important roles in small social groups and society as a whole. It actually promotes cooperation and reforms bad behavior. In contrast highly anonymous groups, like on social media, lack accountability, allowing antisocial behavior to thrive. So gossip and trash talk actually have a positive impact in our day to day life.
@TimTimmeeeeeeeh3 жыл бұрын
@@DominationRotation of course they do, to a certain degree - its different however, if you constantly gossip about your "friends", that's just toxic - tell someone if something annoys you or get new friends
@lukeschilperoort99343 жыл бұрын
@@DominationRotation How does gossip even remotely dissuade bad behavior when the apparent “offender” doesn’t know their being talked about behind their back? Also whose to say gossip has anything to do with bad behavior and isn’t just connected to general pettiness and jealousy? That doesn’t create cohesion within society. It just multiplies and pits subgroups against each other. Healthy criticism is one thing. There’s nothing positive about gossip because it’s excluding by its very definition.
@DominationRotation3 жыл бұрын
@@lukeschilperoort9934 Obviously the right context is very important. What you say is correct of course, the moment one does not perceive the ongoing ostracization, desired effects seize. And I'm not referring to gossip which connects to jealousy and pettiness or other abject motives. Luckily those aren't exclusive reasons behind gossip. What I initially meant was gossip targeting people who actually partook in antisocial behavior. Now how exactly does it have a positive impact? Groups that allow their members to gossip, sustain cooperation and deter selfishness better than those that don’t. And groups do even better if they can gossip and ostracize untrustworthy members, that have been indulging in socially unacceptable behavior. The researchers found that when people learn, through gossip, about the behavior of others, they use this information to align with those deemed more cooperative. Those who have behaved selfishly can then be excluded from group activities, based on the prevailing gossip. This serves the group’s greater good, for selfish types are known to exploit more cooperative people for their own gains. At the same time, when people know that others may gossip about them and experience the resulting social exclusion, they tend to learn from the experience and reform their behavior by cooperating more in future group settings. So yes, of course social exclusion is involved, but in the right context it often leads to socially desired outcomes.

When the other roommate left, Jane would talk crap about her to me. Acted like she hated her. They both talked shit about each other endlessly to me the second the other one left. That's when I realized they were both doing it to me too. They both acted happy to see me. Who knows what they said when I left.
