Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

I was salmon fishing just off the Farallon Islands in 1997. Three of us on a 25 foot Albin and we had caught near limits by 09:30. Suddenly, a very big White breached and hit a seal full on about 50 or 60 feet off our starboard side. It was hard to tell the length of the fish but it took the seal in two and came back round for the bit that was left bobbing on the surface. I gained a whole new level of respect for Mother nature that day.

William Kuelker Yep, they are already showing up and sometimes 10-15 at a time. That’s why I only fish from boats or shore here. The biggest shark I have seen in my boat was a 16’ monster. It made the 12’ shark that I saw on an earlier trip look like a minnow. It was so wide it looked like a submarine. I was in my 21’ Cuddy cabin and I still moved away from the side of the boat. No fishing pressure? Those are my stomping grounds and that place gets hammered every single weekend during fishing season! Not to mention there is a fleet of rental boats that come off that pier behind you. When the wind starts to blow here, that spot is usually the most sheltered and all boats go there. If you want to see 15 great white sharks at once, paddle a mile to the north east. They are there every single day.

You are brave to be out on a small kayak, with big sharks around you. Even though you don't see them one can feel they are there! I personally have had a shark encounter while surfing, right off of Huntington Beach pier, California. The waves were beautiful that day. I can repeat that encounter over and over again, and still get cold sweat. Luckily I came out alive of that attack, but I just can not seem to get back in the water again... I totally respect those who have also been attacked, even lost a leg, or arm and STILL have it in them to get back in the water!!! Some years have passed and I still can not get in the water yet... "You be safe out there bro", and when your gut tells you get out, simply do it!!!! I should have done so when I got that instinctive gut feeling to get out, but didn't, and when the wave intervals stopped for 3-minutes, is when got attacked... I love fishing, but need to be on a big boat to feel more at ease... Take good care

@leftymadrid4 жыл бұрын
@@Gmark25 Ollie, nice to hear you are from that area. This happened in 79'. Yes, I'm that old! No gore story here, and the ONLY marks I had was from the sandpaper like shark skin, along it's whole body length (from top fin to tail fin looked like 6 feet) so the total length was more, easy to see at night because of HB pier lights it passed under me, rubbing my leg making it bleed from the speed of that turn pass on my lower leg! I talked several buddies who dive and they said "it was bumping you to check you out" also went on to say good thing I remained calm with no crazy splashing when that occurred. I was wearing a spring suit that night. And the reason I mentioned that I was lucky to come out of the encounter alive was that if it weren't for the wave intervals right after that happened it would have went for me WITHOUT a doubt, I took the first available swell. When I reached he sand, there were people from the pier talking down to me, saying it was huge and following me as I belly boarded in. There were plenty of folks on the pier that night, screaming, SHARK!!! I remember just getting out of the water, dropping my board on the sand, and sitting pretty much in shock still of what just happened, that's when I noticed the bleeding of my leg from the shark skin rubbing against it... what surprised me was the size of the shark! I know it wasn't a blue shark, this had some width to it! Stay safe.
