I have never worn a belt or dropped my deadlift. Always controlled on the way down and gently set it down. Seems to have made me pretty strong. I’m 180lbs 510PR deadlift.

My body weight is 63.5kg. Yesterday, I did a 200kg conventional deadlift and lower the deadlift under control. I always do that when I have my deadlift training. I think this is better for me to build up my strength.

Was interested in the topic because I used to power dead lift in college for track and we did drop (barely any resistance on the eccentric) with pretty much everything. I'm getting back into deadlifts some years later at a LA Fitness and I'm only playing around with 2 plates but I'm trying to control that drop A LOT more and it is KILLING my back solely on the eccentric portion. I can see the benefits of a more controlled eccentric portion so I'm just really gonna reduce the weight significantly. There's a point of riskiness I don't think is wortrh it in regards to heavier lifts tho. But like you guys said, it's all about your intention in regards to the lift. I will say a mofo that's slowing their eccentric on a 500lb dead lift IS A STRONG MOFO.. significantly more than one who's only dropping that.

Some disagree that controlling the negative will build more muscle because it will fatigue you faster, not allowing you to do as many reps, and the positive builds way more muscle than the negative. This is only in the case of deadlifts because they are so highly fatiguing

very good point. I care about cardio/endurance and stuff so I always do negatives but this would be argument for someone who is targeting strength

If dropping the weight at the top of the deadlift added weight to the bar, then it wouldn’t disqualify you in competition. In a multiple-decade era of PEDs, bench shirts and squat suits, this should be obvious. None of the great deadlifters dropped the weights *intentionally*, even before they were the greats and when they were just getting started. That’s how training works. Jim Schmitz coached in two Olympics and he knew many of the great American Olympic lifters of the last 50 years and he said that it isn’t necessary to drop the weights from the top in the snatch or clean & jerk; those are just essentially bad habits. Ken Patera was the greatest Olympic presser in USA history, and he kept his hands on the bar from the top of the press until the weights hit the platform.

Just starting back into weight training after a long long break. I have some injuries that I have to work around, but my question is, my glute medius is weak and I’ve never really done any serious weight in dead lifts. I started doing light weight dead lifts to work my way in. I’m doing wide stance because I’m 6-2, and I’m doing toes out to target medius. Am I doing right?
@Chinpou_2 жыл бұрын
Do the deadlift in a way that allows you to slowly progress the weight. If you want to work on your glute medius, then isolation exercises are preferable compared to using the deadlift to work that specific muscle

@@Squats200 it's pretty relevant lmao I mean if you were an experienced lifter you'd know that putting the deadlift down slowly just fatigues you and fucks up your set, there's a reason Romanian deadlifts are a different exercise. Straight up bro people need to stop looking lmao everyone's so busy watching everyone in the gym that nobody's allowed to workout now. Obviously exaggerating but don't go yelling at people for deadlifting loud, that's literally what every elite powerlifter does, it's not like your really doing anything wrong except hurt older folks ears, and even then bro there are specific gyms like planet fitness that cater to beginners and doesn't let you drop weights or grunt.

You drop the lift when the fatigue kicks in but obviously if you can control the weight down then it's good. Both are good techniques.
@Stuke512 жыл бұрын
I don’t drop the weight, I prefer a slow eccentric to maximize hypertrophy, but there’s real merit to dropping the weight on in heavy DLs - you obviously lack education on the subject.
