One aspect I really liked when it came to Miss Martian's growth was how her sibling relationship played out. When her younger brother called her out for abandoning him on Mars so she could flee to Earth, her defense was that she was just a kid. Later, during her argument with her older sister not defending them, she in turn replied that she was just a kid, too.
@dumbidea1007 Жыл бұрын
I find it too easy I would have preferred a more grounded conflict between sibling. Something like their parents overcompensate and protected her against her siblings reproche making her an entitled brat who was never at fault. Because of that they never even tried with the younger brother. Then John after having her steal his ship (which seems to be important for Martian more than just a simple car for us) would have put his foot down and said you are terrible parents i am taking her to earth with me because I can’t trust you idiots. Then it would be an actual family issue like the sister is the only one even talking to her which would also explain her changing her name because she never forgave her parents. Then the question is who is guilty the kid that was plainly hated by his family and turned to Martian isis The sister that made his family hate them for being green or the parents for being too lenient and making her a brat and ruining her Or society for starting it all. Or something as simple as white Martian telepathy being incredibly irritating to hear to regular Martian making peoples plainly not enjoy talking to them. The writer never once had a deeper view of familiar conflict. They put all the blame on the society

@@dumbidea1007I like ‘that’ conflict between the green and white Martians better, where instead of skin color it’s their types of telepathy. The greens discriminate against the whites due to the white’s form of telepathy being irritating to them; it’s not right for fair to the whites, as it’s something out of their control, but it’s completely understandable why the greens wouldn’t want to associate with them (would you want to around someone who irritates you or causes you mental discomfort?). Because the greens outnumber the whites, the whites’ telepathy is discriminated against, being seen as bad, and treated poorly because of it. A far better allegory for ‘racism’ without having to resort to the all too real/close to home ‘skin color discrimination’.

"He did not simply learn tolerance--that is insuffecient. He learned acceptance, empathy." That's a huge thing when it comes to preaching about co-existing with other people, cultures, races, and creeds. People always say you need to learn tolerance, but tolerance simply means you "put up" with others. There will always be an undercurrent of misunderstanding and prejudice. What we don't teach enough of is empathy, the ability to see the world as others do. Not only does this help us with accepting those who are different than us, it also helps us understand why those who can't accept others think the way they do. There has to be a shared set of values where certain actions and behaviors are deemed intolerable in order for a society to coexist. This is why people mocked the "coexist" movement. Not only because the people who preached it were often blatant hypocrites who exploded at anyone who even mildly disagreed with their opinions, but it was in the midst of cultural background of the "war on terror," specifically the ongoing conflicts between the Liberal West whose morality is based on Christianity, and radical Islam, which by definition must literally kill anything that is NOT radical Islam... It was a movement that insisted on ignoring the most extreme example possible of everything wrong with that way of thinking. It's no wonder those same people have , decades later, gone far, far further in completely rejecting any reality that conflicts with their beliefs and desires, even to the point of openly embracing fascist practices like censorship, political violence, and imprisoning their political opposition... My only issue with M'gann's character arc throughout the series is that, while I buy that she changed as a person and recognized her mistakes, there was never any amount of consequence towards her actions in season 2. Lobotomizing people and erasing a partner's memory are tremendous crimes, yet there's never any serious consequences for her. Geo-Force lost his friends over his action and was branded a villain. Roy Harper was humiliated and kicked out the Team despite saving them. Yet M'gann gets to keep her good standing with her friends and colleagues? She gets to keep her boyfriend and even marries him?
@starrsmith3810 Жыл бұрын
Nobody branded Geo-Force a villain. They just simply didn’t agree with him killing his uncle what’s so ever. Megan literally made Conner break up with her, didn’t earn his forgiveness easily, and she saw first hand what damage she did to Kaldur and sought out to fix it. Roy was literally putting the team in danger multiple times, one of which damn near got them all sucked into space, just so he could avoid capture. And Megan didn’t actually kill anybody so there’s that and her actions didn’t put the team in gigantic peril.
@sabrina21797 Жыл бұрын
@starrsmith3810 They basically denounced Geo Force immediately and made no attempts to reconcile with him. He felt so alone he let the doctor who betrayed him and his sister back into his life. Geo is misguided but I don't think he's irredeemable, especially then. But he definitely got a lot of consequences. M'gann, I'd argue, did NOT face consequences proportional to her actions. She LOBOTOMIZED people who were in opposition to her, which is essentially killing them when they're in such a catatonic, brain dead state. Conner rightfully broke up with her as an ultimatum, and she proceeded to immediately hook up with Lagoon Boy...so I wouldn't really count her being broken up with as a consequence that made her regret her actions. Especially because once she finally learns how wrong her actions were via Kaldur, she pretty quickly gets back with Conner... I'd also argue that she did put her team in peril. More specifically, Kaldur and Artemis, even if she didn't have a reason to think they would be (I get she wouldn't care for Kaldur, and Artemis was "dead"). Just because she was able to undo the damage she did to Kaldur, it didn't mean she didn't put her team in harm's way or that she wouldn't eventually with the way she'd callously and ruthlessly rip through people's minds in the name of justice. I really really wish they showed her growth and redemption with that more...it would've made it easier for me to stomach her and Conner getting married. I had to try my best to pretend S2 didn't exist for me to get invested in her storyline in S4...would've also liked for Conner to have made her work for forgiveness a little more and still show the lasting impact that trying to memory erase your partner would have, especially when she was dishonest with him in S3.
@thunderlion6909 Жыл бұрын
I'm mean connor didn't fully forgive her because one in the newer seasons they had argument and think connor brought up her abuse of her powers again and she told him she changes but Connor told that forgiving is not forgeting so it safe to say that he totally forget nor fully forgive her.

Megan's journey is... incredible. I think that her and Connor have the most "visible" maturing from all of the team, mostly because how unique their respective circumstance are. Megan isnt exactly young by human standards, sure she is young by martian standards but the years she lived on mars, the trauma and escapism... they did a number on her. Second season was when we truly saw they true M'gann, and it wasn't a pretty sight, she retreated in "pragmatism" and bitterness, trying to rationalize her actions as necessary, knowing how much she was hurting those close to her. To then understand herself, accepting that she may never be forgiven for her wrongs but to keep going and being a better person, being a beacon of possibility and hope. And Connor... GOD, i think it is offensive from my part to try to resume his journey, from that angry and lost state fearing not having the right to be alive, to becoming a teacher, a guide, a partner, a hero, and with hope... a father, he will be an incredible father. Connor is amazing, M'gann is amazing, this show is AMAZING.

I honestly don't think that Miss Martian can be considered a villain during season 2 of young justice. Despite the clearly wrong things she did in season 2, Megan was neither evil nor was she a villain. She definitely did the wrong things for reasons that weren't necessarily right, and even using her powers on Conner wasn't enough to make her stop. It literally took Megan using her powers in anger to hurt Caldur because she thought he killed Artemis, only to learn that it wasn't true that Megan finally realized the consequences of her actions. Artemis was also forced to make Megan confront her mistake or risk the villains finding out the plan of Artemis and Caldur undercover. It was here that not only did Megan think she deserved to suffer for her mistakes, but she started to try to make things right. As misguided as she was, Miss Martian was neither evil nor a villain. i know im late here but i love miss martian as an allegory. idk how intentional it is, but being ashamed of yourself and trying to "pass" as something else is a story lots of people can relate to, be that hiding being queer or natural hair

This was fun. However, in the interest of encouraging you to branch out from comics-related media, I suggest you check out the class series Reboot from the 1990s and early 2000s; I think you might be surprised by the characters, and it would allow you to take a look at themes that you were probably considering but didn't have the right material to use. That said, I recommend avoiding the mass of tropes that comprised Netflix's Guardian Code; it was an insult to the original series at best. Also, I think you might have fun trying to spot and catch all of the little references to other series, and like, some of them are a bit more subtle than others. The series pulls from a lot of different places, but still manages to do its own thing. And if you know where to look, the series has managed to not only establish its own lore but also have some episodes, especially in the latter half of the series, that not only build on this lore but also build off of it a comments for those episodes. And you might also spot some interesting parallels to some characters you've grown to get a better understanding of over the course of this channel. Also, Reboot is a classic series that a lot of people that spent time watching really do want to see get a continuation or sequel done right; as mentioned prior, Reboot: Guardian Code was not this, almost none what it had going on was Reboot, and what little it did have that was ironically Reboot was incredibly poorly managed to the point that fans of the original Reboot felt like they were being insulted and disrespected along with the source material. And before that trainwreck that was basically nothing more than a collection of tropes slapped together in the laziest ways possible was even announced, there was a rumor going around the internet a few years after the series finale, which was a cliffhanger ending, that there was a movie, or series of movies, that would officially cap off the series; I think you can still find the teaser trailer for the Reboot movie on KZbin somewhere.

My point guys, is this: the "dignified position" if you know *anything at all* about anything of this kind of situation; you know that to be in power, especially in the Eastern Bloc, or its "eternal equivalent" as it were, really is a death-sentence, it is a LOT like being a manager inside the USSR under "Comrade" Stalin; and if you don't know the deadly danger *that* means: buddy: you better RUN and find out from studying history, especially the "Stalin Purges" real fast! It is the *furthest* thing from safe! In that kind of situation; you want to be a commoner, as destitute as it would be, you're far better off far from power than you'd be close to it: that kind of exposure to it will KILL you, literally; so would her head foe in that kind of a mix of universes.

Big problem with the show is how it doesn’t really feel like M’gann learned the right lesson. Honestly, she got off relatively Scott free despite how honestly bad her actions were. Like the only one who addresses it is Conner. The show either didn’t have time to delve into the consequences of her actions due to the bloated cast and numerous plot threads; or it didn’t think more needed to be said about it. She cares about lobotomizing and abusing her powers when it came to affecting people she cared about, to say nothing about abusing it with enemies, which was a point Conner brought up but all but dropped. I love YJ but maaaaan. Season 1 was peak. A
