When Your Sporran Isn't Enough

As we all know, the sporran (gaelic for ‘purse’) is a leather pouch worn with the kilt to serve as your one pocket. Sporrans are incredibly handy: Durable…always right in front of you….easy to access (even when sitting down)....holding plenty of items comfortably.
But what do you do if you are carrying more than you can fit into your sporran? The lads chat about good options such as belt pouches, leather sachells and backpacks.

As a life-long wearer of a so-called "photographer's vest", I swear by them. Their utility is unsurpassed. However, I would not likely wear it with a kilt.

I’ve learned to only carry what I absolutely need. Billfold and keys and cell phone easily fit in the sporran.

I have a leather belt pouch that I got from an Etsy seller in Cyprus just for all the USA Kilts business cards I've received. That way if anyone asks about my kilt I can hand them a card and shill. I even did so at a market on my way back to my hotel in Limerick from Philly. 😉

Agreed with Eric - messenger bags work very well. There's a great leather bag maker called Poetic Earth - they make the Renfest rounds

I can barely fit my keys, phone and wallet in my sporran. There is a little pocket on the back wall inside my sporran, and I can kinda shove my wallet in there,. It doesn't hold very well, but it does keep my wallet from falling down farther in my sporran. If my phone doesn't sit exactly on the bottom of my sporran, I can't get the flap shut, and my keys and car fob push the phone up too much, so I found I need to hang the keys on the side of the sporran with the car fob outside the sporran to make room for the phone. I probably fit a pen in there too along the other side. But that is about it.

I have the same problem with my phone .It has to go in first so it gets right down to the bottom of the sporran . Some of my sporrans is still a stretch to close over the top of the phone .

I have deliberately worn a messanger bag low against the pleats im the back because its very windy where im from and the casual kilt is extremely light, so that helped keep my modesty

I am allergic to wasps so I always have to carry medicine and EpiPen with me all the time. Have an old ammunition bag as an everyday bag I found in a second hand shop a few years ago. Loves it😊

I needed something for EDC and didn't like most of what was available. Everything was either too big or not big enough. I finally settled on an old-timey option, a classic Possibles Pouch that in days of yore folks would take on a walk in the woods. It's called a possibles pouch because it carries everything you could possibly need for a walk in the woods (without carrying a backpack). It's large enough to carry what I need without being too large. After *a lot* of searching I found one on Etsy hand made by Jay Smith whose store name is Gilmore Creek. It's oil-tanned, supple leather with a wide shoulder strap which I wear cross-body. A lot of what I carry does fit in the sporran, but my sunglasses are no-go, and I also carry a Stop the Bleed kit. If you recall, in Las Vegas we had a shooting on October 1st a few years ago. I got certified after that event. If I was going out for an evening I could leave the bag in the car (hidden of course), or not depending on what I'm doing and why. The closure on this bag is cool (and old-timey!). It's got a large button made of walnut about 2 1/2" in diameter, with a loop of leather that get's wrapped around the button several times. Never had any issues with my pleats because of the bag. Only when the dry cleaner messed up.

You don't need to carry any luggage, that is what your ghillie is for.

My band uniform includes a police officers long sleeve shirt. It has two breast pockets with flaps secured by a piece of Velcro. I find this arrangement to be invaluable. My cell phone and business card go in one side and my car keys in the other. I keep my wallet in my sporran and that's it. When I am not in uniform my sporran gets kind of heavy.

The sporran has led me to carry less with me. I switched from a full-sized wallet to a minimal wallet and a money clip. I carry fewer keys. Add in a couple Kleenex and my phone, and it's full, but not stuffed. My challenge is with prescription glasses/sunglasses. If I'm out during the daytime, I like to have the option of switching back and forth. During the cool months, jacket (or waistcoat) pockets work. But I live in a warm climate, so there are only about 4 cool months during the year. If I'm carrying more stuff, my next size up is usually a messenger bag. Mine is large enough to carry a laptop with some room to spare.

Well, I carry lots of stuff, so my primary hauler is the Mexpedition sling bag, holds all the "extra" stuff I don't carry on my person. The Sporran changes with the kilt though, Kiltman kilts I use their pockets, USA Casual Kilts I use the DNKE Sporran, nicer USA kilts (or casuals dressed up) I use the smaller USA Kilt Sporrans. As the sporran is paired down the overflow is stowed in the Mexpedition bag and the bag goes everywhere I go.

I sometimes hike in a Great Kilt, sometimes with traditional Jacobite inspired type gear. Depends how long I expect to be away for?.
