The only way to change our leaders or our companies is to change the environment around us. If we can create a loving, trusting, high-performing team - other people (including our leaders) will start to take notice and slowly but surely, the culture will shift. No matter what, it has to start with us.

Great video and so true Simon. When I was a company commander in the Army, I became successful when I realized that as long as I provided an umbrella over my company by providing clear vision and direction, letting them plan, protecting their time, providing them with the resources they needed, and just letting my subordinate leaders lead their part of the organization, we could achieve anything.

Leadership is simple in theory. Give people Support Tools Skills Accountibility In that order. The issue I see with most leaders is thry are short on the first 3 and ling on the 4th. That's not how people grow. We didnt learn to walk or talk by being berated and put in a competitive environment. You also can't hold people accountable if you don't give them the tools thry need or train them well. It all goes back to leadership. If people are not being held accountable while others are resentment grows. You want to test how you are doing as a leader? Look at the culture of your team/company etc. That is your mirror.

As a mid level manager, I like it when new people to get group ask questions-Ben if they are just clarifying something I told them: -When do you need this? -So, X and Y are the most critical care abouts, right? -Is there a good template or example project that I could use as a reference? -If I have detail questions about tool/process/product Z, who can I ask to show me? I love it even better if, after giving an assignment or task, the person or team has starts looking into it and they come back to ask things like: -I’ve started an outline/draft/part 1 and I wanted to make sure I’m doing his right before getting too far, would you have time to look over this to let me know if I’m on the right track? -At there any background reference materials for W? -Is there a source for how to do X? -Do the entire project steps 1-4 need to done by Y deadline? -Why do we do it this way? -Are there any parts that you’d like to review before I work on the next steps? And, best of all-especially for big new people OR complicated team projects OR fast moving/urgent events or work environments: -I’ve got J & K work also to do for Boss/Project J, and I don’t think I can get hose and this new one done by T day: what do you want me to work on first? -I’ve got this finished, who all needs to review it before I send it out? -I couldn’t reach you/other help, so I made the decision to do it This Way b/c of X & Y reasoning. Is that okay, or do I need to correct it and resend it? -I might need help with task part B-it’s not my strength. Is there anyone I can go to for help on it? ... Overall, good bosses should set the team priorities & task requirements & goals, make them clear, but allow as much freedom within those defined priorities & tasks as reasonable given their team and situation. Junior and highly technical workers should be shielded from excessive/unnecessary outside distractions-although the whole team needs enough occasional high level awareness/news to appreciate the team priority list.

From personal experience, and just this week it got worse & worse for everyone on my team... What if they don't leave us alone? If they take advantage of the good job we're doing, sell it as their own and just keep asking more and more of us... I'm afraid we'll eventually get to a point where we all break, as a team and individually. And I don't know what to do about it.

I think Dr John Maxwell once had a great analogy, too, for how Leaders should change tactics depending on the morale of the team: -Low moral: A Leader gets out in front, harnesses up, and leads by example how get the job done. -Mid morale or starting a new project/team: A team lead needs to find good people and put them in the right jobs (this is actual from Good to Great: “Put the right people in the right seats on the bus”) -High morale: Imagine your team and especially your top performers as go-cart in high gear going down a hill: a good Leader gets the the rocks & sticks out of the way (eg bureaucratic hurdles) or fills large potholes or helps unstick from mud holes (eg finds outside help or resources when needed) and generally gets out of the at to allow the team to stay in high gear. Of course, making sure they are pointed in the correct direction with clear high level priorities & requirements/goals is still ever critical. All that said, I think any person looking to be a good teammate, a good Leader at any level, can have this mindset, too: just keep an eye out for what kind of help your tam-and leader-need .

Looking at my company, I suspect that the finite mindset won't change in my remaining career - in fact I suspect that the twenty years old in my team, however much I build the safe haven and future proof them, may never see the failings that the company is repeatedly bestowing on senior leaders. Perhaps one day someone will wake up and thing maybe we really should leave and look at the small pocket of leaders like myself who build uniquely interesting teams that always deliver.

1:55 I asked in my company if a process has to be done this way and if I can try to change it. I told them I would do all the work and it won't effect anyone in a serious way. Maybe slight changes, but nothing new that they didn't already deal with in the past. Oh boy, what an idea that was! I was told that it's nice that I'm interested in this topic, but I should rather look for a snadbox and play there, because literally nobody except me cares about this. All I'm doing is to inflate everything until it's a balloon. Many people are occupied by shuffling things around because of the profit that exists only in my head (actually more people are occupied than in this section qork in total). It's playing kindergarden and nothing but jacking and fuzzing around. That sounds like I would requested to change about everything that exists and works, right? In short: I work for an EOD team and my idea was to document the things we find in the field a bit better with images to improve internal training. The crux is that the person who went completely bonkers is the person responsible for the company internal training. I have asked other workes if they think my idea is that bad. Many said no it isn't, but the training chef just does not want to have extra work. Another said I highlight all the things he is too lazy to do and that pisses him off quite a lot. Others said that it's written in the conduct of our company that new and unknown ammunition has to be documented and shared within all workers. The end of the story: The training chef is now super pissed at me and already tried to get me thrown out of the company.

What if there are two sets of the games. The boss' infinity game and the employee's infinity game. Then there's a stalemate and no change right? It's either the boss backrupt or the employee leaves. The former has no use, becoz you'll have no company to change.

Having heard Simon say "leadership has nothing to do with rank, it's all about taking responsibility" is so misleading and irksome. Having spent a long time in the corporate world I have come to believe that rank & designation is a prerequisite for anyone to take up / show leadership at any level in an organisation. Even in semiformal training workshops organised by the HR periodically, those with seniority in the organisation tend to be adopted n accepted as leaders far more easily than those lower down the ranks. But that's not to say that every top manager is also a good leader. In fact, most superiors in the corporate world in particular are merely managers empowered to lead a team, but so often demand respect and not command respect of their team / subordinates. Those who do command respect are the ones who are perceived as good leaders, yet their rank does play a big part in this. So ond shouldn't undermine the importance of rank in pursuit of leadership. This often applies even to our family system.

Leaderahip is tanking care of people around you, that's what he always says. And it has nothing to do with ranks. Ranks might help to boss someone. But you do not need to have rank over someone to take care of them
