Have some tears in my eyes as I'm listening to this. My beloved partner is one of Mayo's oldest original pacemaker recipients (1960's). He has had so many surgeries since and now his leads don't work and we were told his next surgery will be major thoracic in nature and he has a good chance of not surviving it. We met each other later in life and know how precious life is. Glad you made it in one piece and I'll be thinking of your mom. It will all work out with great patience and planning for that blizzard. We are just now melting from the blizzard we had a week and a half ago. Be well.

Great news Robin that your mom is ok . I am 54 years old and in October 2018 had Open Heart Surgery. My heart was functioning 20% and didn’t know it. Thank God I was taking on time to the hospital. Now my heart function is 50% like it should be. Tell her to take it easy, keep active and be careful with those blood thinner meds. You be careful too with the weather out there. God Blessed 🙏🏻.

Take care Do you have any Ratchet Tie Down Straps or rope you can use to anchor your RV to the base of trees. Tie round any suitable anchor points on your RV the lower the better You can even use the front and back axles also remover any lose external clutter that can be blown at your RV Good luck You RV owners need to get on some 2 way radio system and start up mutual aid system using something like CB, Family Radio Service (FRS) or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)

Well, it's hard to top what's been stated by everyone, and it's nice to hear your mother came through her ordeal and you were able to get there safely. Also glad to see the rangers are vigilant of your presence and those of others. You're better stationary than moving in a blizzard. The weather's been extreme the last 2 weeks, with storms pummeling California all the way through to the Midwest. Although unnerving, I'm certain you will be fine. You were missed and hopefully all will be well. Looking forward to a tour of your new rig. Be well...safe travels.

I knew a man with a pace maker who eventually had to have it removed because it kept misfiring when his heart was beating just fine. Yes, he said it felt like a cattle prod was zapping him on the inside...very painful he said. FYI, if one is on blood thinners surgery is usually delayed a day or two so as to reduce the chance of bleeding to death from surgery. I work at a hospital and worked in the heart failure unit for 2 years.

I've lived in Colorado for over 30 years and I know how brutal the blizzards can be. We're now in Texas and experienced the winds yesterday 75 mph winds and rocked our travel trailer. So glad your Mom is doing well. I lost my Mom in October and a few days before, we were headed out of town for the weekend to do a volunteer construction project. As we were getting ready to pul out, I said to my hubby, i just wasn’t comfortable with leaving her. He had been telling me to stay. We had been so looking forward to this project. I finally decided I had better stay with her. We opened up the fifthwheel, i packed a bag and went to my Mom. So, so glad I did. things did not go well and she past away the next day. So, as you said, always follow your gut when it comes to family an illness. Even if things go well, you are still glad you were there. 💕

Hi Robin. So good to know those rangers are concerned for u and keeping a watchful eye. The wind brings up an interesting issue. When u purchase a rig, is it mentioned anywhere about wind gusts in relation to safety of your rig, or is it assumed people will just hunker down and ride out storms.....which in your case doesn’t mean much cause you’re still a sitting target. Very scary actually. Praying for your safety. As a ICU nurse of 26 years, your mom’s issue with the pacemaker is a first for me. Sadly, we need to somehow convince physicians we KNOW when somethings not right. Thank God she persisted. This is definitely a teaching moment for those who cared for her in that hospital and clinic. The outcome was positive but obviously, this could’ve been a much different tale. Can’t wait to see your new rig and how she fared during the storm. Take care. We got ur back missy!

A trick we learned to insure the leads seat properly is to wear a shirt with cuffs that button and pants or skirt with belt loops. Tie a string/yarn whatever... from the button hole in the cuff of the shirt to a belt loop in the waistband of pants/skirt so that it reminds her not to lift her arm too high. My father-in-law and mom found this very helpful in those very early days of their pacemakers. Glad your mom was persistent! Be careful out there!

picked up our little Casita travel trailer in Rice, Texas in January and spent the better part of two months visiting friends from east Texas to the Big Bend country. Absolutely LOVE the Casita. The weather generally sucked the whole time we were traveling :~) but the journey itself was blessed. Had to be back in Virginia by March 17th (got home on the 10th) and spent about two weeks dodging polar vortex, putting RV antifreeze in our holding tanks, thanking God for the forsight to add the propane heater to our Casita and watching three or four weather sites. Storm Tracker kept us out of trouble avoiding Alabama and skirting Atlanta. Glad to hear you are (so far!) safe and that your Mom did so very well. Keep us posted. I have a long "mother and pacemaker" story, but I won't go into that now. If you ever decide to compile a blog about pacemakers, let me know, and I'll be happy to share. Again, I'm very thankful that you are okay, and I will continue to pray that God will give you wisdom about when and where to drive and that He will protect you. Take care.

Hey, Robin! Glad to know you made it there safely and your mom is doing well. My Dad had severe heart problems, so I understand that urgency of, “I need to be there, now!” I will be praying for you this week. I am praying that the storm will shift away from you, but if it doesn’t, I know the One who can calm the storm. Sometimes He doesn’t calm the storm, but protects us through it. I’m praying for that calm for you. About 12 years ago, we were in South Dakota and got hit by a hailstorm (baseball sized) and 65 mph straight-line winds...pretty scary stuff. I know you said gusts to 80 mph. I can’t imagine! Do they have any kind of storm shelter? Please take care. Many prayers for you and your safety. See you Sunday! Thanks for this update. OK now, listen to me young lady. First of all, I'm so glad there was a positive outcome for both you and your Mom. Now for the advice! If you should ever have an emergency where time is of the essence and there is a potential for weather issues, throw together an overnight bag and get on a plane. I'm serious! This is why we have a credit card! When you think your rig could be lost, you could have been seriously hurt or worse, it makes me cringe. My daughter is in Denver and drove home from work in that blizzard with white out conditions, mid day going 20 miles per hour with her hazard lights on. Today, she's taking a snow day and will hopefully decompress after that ride home. Just like we prepare for other things in life, make your worse case scenario plans ahead of time so it will be easy to make the right decision based on logic. Ok, I'm done. So glad you're ok.

Some ideas for high wind camping: 1. If possible aim you rig in the direction you expect the prevailing wind. This presents much less cross section exposure to wind forces, and your rig is less likely to tip over end-to-end than broadside. Also consider letting the air out of your tires so you are lower and less buoyant, more hunkered down. 2. For next time, try to find 1 or 2 sets of some strong cables, set up to attach to the top of camper. Carry a sledgehammer and 2-4 1-11/2” steel pipes 1.5 to 2 feet long. Drive the spikes into the ground at a 45deg angle and Fasten the cables to the spikes, so your rig is “tied down.” If this requires more strength than you have, then ask your neighbors or park ranger to drive the spikes. You may alternatively cable onto nearby trees upwind. I don’t rv, but i have a lot of experience with high winds on land-stored sailboats. ps you should have a co2 alarm in any small living space thats heated. (Also a lesson from sailboating). I enjoy just listening to your stories even though im not ready to rv. On the positive side you will learn the wind speeds you and your rig can tolerate. Likely to give you more confidence.

Glad to see you are ok, and your mom is doing good. There is a website that I recently learned of (www.safetravelusa.com). It doesn't have an app so you'll just have to pin it to your desktop or bookmark it on your phone. That's one of the downfalls of it not having an app, you'll need internet connection/wifi. So when you go to the website, if you scroll down just a bit, you'll see the title of Traffic + Weather. You'll chose the state your traveling and it gives you a Trip/Route Planner and in the tabs of the Planner it shows an Alerts Tab and a News Tab. And it has a great Map Legend with great choices for planning your route. Then as you scroll down further on the main page, you'll see 3 separate maps detailing temperature, wind and weather. These maps do have a delay, but at least you'll be able to see and plan according. I do hope this helps you some. Again, happy to see your well. As for the blizzard, I do hope you'll get a chance to get passed this and get to warmer, safer temperatures. Safe travels.

@@janhoyle1462 So sorry to read your story. I really hope you aren't under a heavy load of guilt and blame and have found a way to accept the events and your circumstances at that time. You couldn't have helped it. Thank you for telling this, I still have my dad and need to see him much more than I do. Sure that a lot of people read your message and get a little wake up. Peace and love

Last year we decided to ignore other's warnings about NM, AZ, TX spring winds and we headed out. Only. RV. Out! There's a reason. The wind!!!! We were unable to even put our slides out. It really sounded like they would be sheered right off. We were stuck inside for days on end. Lesson learned. Glad to hear your mom is good.

Just a quick note to second your recommendation of the weatherbug app. Been using it for years, as I drive cross country many times. Weatherbug not only shows wind, it also shows how close lightening is as well as fire(s). It also has a nice radar feature to check out what (if anything) is in the area. Kari

Glad your Mom did well with her procedure. Hang on, and put your face into the wind! Hope everything is fine on the other side of this storm!

WOW! What a story. Check the web site WWW.WINDY.COM, which has layers with sophisticated weather information -- including amazing wind details. After you get used to using it, do a show about the web site. My husband uses it all the time, and I call him to assess the weather for me, wherever I might be.

So glad you were able to see your Mom and she is ok. Please be careful and stay warm. It's good to know that there are other people in the park with you. And I am sure the Park Ranger will look out for you also.
