Sure, this _Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego_ PBS game show version of "The Lady in Red" is her at her evilest, but in most iterations, she's only the villain purely for the thrill of the chase ("Oooh! The Chase!" ~Rockapella) rather than some selfish motive like monetary gain or world conquest. Sure, she wants to be recognized as the "greatest thief of all time", but she's like anime thief protagonist Lupin the III in that, although she's still a thief, she's a thief with moral values (This is further expanded upon in the 1994 FOX cartoon _Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego_ [Rita Moreno voices her in that incarnation], where her gentlewoman behavior is apparent for all to see, as she occasionally teams up with ACME Junior Detective siblings Zack & Ivy against worse threats, such as Maelstrom & Lee Jordan. because unlike those two, Carmen isn't keen on letting her pursuers get killed, nor is she really stealing just for her own personal satisfaction or to avenge some vendetta). The Neflix reboot of 2018 ages Carmen's character down & even makes her a noble anti-hero (meaning, she only steals from other criminals & actually returns the stolen loot once she recovers it), as she leaves V.I.LE behind (much to the chagrin of her teachers [villains psychology professor Gunner Malestrom, mad scientist Sarah Bellum, Coach Brunt aka a reworked & much more competent Eartha Brute, clean-up crew The Cleaners, etc.] & her former classmates [Graham "Crackle" Gray, Tigress, Mime Bomb, El Topo & his life partner La Cheve, etc.]) after realizing that the school for aspiring crooks/crime syndicate's underhanded, illegal activities are putting innocent people's lives at risk and filching the iconic red trench coat & fedora ensemble from V.I.L.E's resident accountant Cookie Booker (who is voiced by Rita Moreno, as a bit of torch passing between the aging Hollywood dame & the younger Carmen, as voiced by fellow Latina actress Gina Rodriguez of _Jane the Virgin_ fame) whilst getting remote assistance from Player (instead of just representing the viewing audience as a live action child shown from the backside playing a Carmen Sandiego computer game [this was how they were seen on the _Where On Earth_ cartoon by a pair of uncredited child actors], this new version of Player has a face & is living life as a child prodigy from his bedroom setup, who acts as the proverbial Wade to Carmen's Kim Possible to make the appropriate comparison, since the reboot's art style mimics that of the once-popular Disney Channel series [which in itself is about a "basic average girl here to save the world" by living a double life as both a high school cheerleading teenager & a world-protecting super spy, alongside her hapless comedy sidekick boyfriend Ron Stoppable & his pet naked mole rat Rufus]) as well as physical backup from her "partners in crime" Zack & Ivy (Yes, instead of working for ACME as Junior Detectives [as they did in both the Junior Detective editions of the classic computer games or the _Where On Earth_ cartoon], the rebooted Zack & Ivy are instead vagabonds on the run working for Carmen) whilst the younger Carmen's surrogate father figure (former V.I.L.E instructor/master ninja/regretful killer of Carmen's real parents Shadowsan, who formally adopts Carmen as his daughter after they both leave V.I.L.E together) watches from afar/dispenses sagely advice whenever needed. All this, meanwhile ACME still considers her a threat, simply because she's still breaking the law & isn't up for joining the law enforcement/hired detectives tasked with pursuing her (Chase Devoneaux & Julia "Jules" Argent).
