So strange to hear. After growing up with Fred range of a 5 mile area starting at age 4 in a large city in 80s. All you had to do was be home by dark. Everyone knew stranger danger etc. we were always in packs anyway. Even daycare let anyone over age 5 go play in the woods without adults. You definitely don’t need a phone. They are a handy tool but not a necessity.

CJ Holt yes, but if you child goes missing there’s a bigger chance they will be found as you can track the phone, or they can use the phone to call for help, really in 2019 if you don’t give you kids a phone (if they go out alone) that’s not safe, these things were made to make life easier, and u don’t need to give them an iphone, a basic £20 one will do the same thing.

Kim Hoffa me too, but I wish he would just write or call his mom and say “I’m ok - but I don’t want to come home. I’m sorry.” Or something. So she knows he is alive and ok at least. I just cannot imagine, as a parent myself, not knowing. Having no closure. I’d be crushed if my teen daughter wanted nothing to do with me- because she. Is. My. World. Always. But I would be more crushed not knowing what happened or if she was alive or not or in pain/suffering, needing help. I hope he sees this video if he is alive, just sends her a letter or *something* . This case has hit close to home. My best friend was in a similar frustrating situation with his parents. He was meant to graduate in the next year. He excelled at school, was meant to go to med school. His parents controlled him whenever they could. Our friend group played WoW and he wouldn't be allowed to play on school nights, only on weekends. I remember when he would talk to us about how excited he was to get out of there and flee like his siblings had. The last night we had ever spoken to him, his mom was mad about his track and field results and destroyed his computer. She tore it from the wall, threw it, just total chaos. He spoke to one of our other friends about it and said he wouldn't be able to get on for awhile. The following week, his dad found him dead in his car. He had shot himself. It'll be four years next week, and this case just makes my heart ache for my best friend. I hope Macin is happy in the life he lives now, if he is still with us. If he isn't, I hope he rests easy and has found peace.

That’s so sad and such a loss of life - and somebody who was probably going to do great things for others. Sorry for the loss of your friend. This is what happens when parents control and become overbearing, but cruel, sometimes you back somebody in to a corner and they feel powerless to do anything but take the power back by taking their life. So sad. Sending you hugs and may your friend be playing WoW and have found peace.

The only thing I worry for is that Macin was simply a child, maybe he was older mentally than his young years of life. Not only that but human trafficking is so big right now. This doesn't seem to be a case of bad or abusive parents though. Lots of parents limit their kids media/gaming, even if the parents share the same passion. This kid seems to just have a bad mental illness. Did he think he was going to get more anime and gaming on the streets than he did at home? And he only had one year left before he was off to college. There was no reason to risk his life, his security, his access to the amenities, food, and the passions he says he loves, etc. Unfortunately if he hasn't come back by now he is probably either dead or in a really bad situation he can't easily get out of.

I don't think any of that is that weird tbh. My parents never saw me off to school in the morning. I wanted to sleep in as much as I could, got up in just enough time to get dressed, brush my teeth, do whatever to my hair, and walked right out the door. They let me just do my thing. As for the siblings, it could be a sign for sure, but also remember Macin moved from Canada right before his senior year, so all the other kids were adults, maybe in college, maybe had jobs. I can see them not wanting to uproot if they didn't have to and then also have to deal with visa stuff, which can be a huge pain. Their dad also didn't move with Macin and his mom right away so the siblings could've been with him still. Like I said, it could for sure be a sign, but I don't think it's much of a red flag.
@LucyLynette

@@walkinginthewild It's the contrast that's the red flag for me. The parents were trusting enough to let their teen manage his morning routine independently, but not trusting enough to let that same teen manage his bedtime routines and habits. Most parents tend to lean one way or the other. The mix of the two is the oddity.

Julz XD I don’t mean that the mother was a bigot, just that my parents told me it was a sin and that gays go to hell growing up, and that they’d never have a gay person in their house. That affects someone when they think their parents don’t accept them, even if their parents do. The church of Latter Day Saints also doesn’t have a great track record with supporting the lgbt community either but that’s besides the point because I know not all people in that church feel that way!

I think each situation is different. My teenage son has ASD and ADHD and his internet usage now has to be closely monitored after he was bullied online to the point of trying to take his own life. We thought we were helping him manage his online life responsibly, but didn't see what was hidden. He is slowly recovering, but the internet can be such a dark place. Some people may think we are strict, but he simply didn't understand that he was being bullied because of his ASD. Too much screen time also affects his sleep so we have to be careful about that. There is no one size fits all solution here.

Absolutely, even if they restricted his use for his own good, coming down on kids by taking away all choices is destructive in the extreme. And, having expectations that are unrealistic is the most destructive thing you can do to a child. Studying psychology, this is considered more harmful than most abuse because the child has nowhere to go, because they feel they are not good enough no matter what they do.

It’s absolutely INSANE to me that the dad wouldn’t be apart of the shows or televised interviews involving the disappearance. We don’t know what happened to Macin, but what we DO know is that he felt trapped and felt so much like a disappointment that he wrote about it AND had already previously tried to run away. It’s super clear that his dad didn’t understand him. The dad was very much a “man’s man” and was athletic and went to the gym often, but Macin was sensitive and creative, liked to keep to himself, and loved anime.. Macin was more of a mama’s boy. (I don’t mean that in a bad or insulting way) Because of all this, you would think his dad would make it a point to go on tv and show Macin that he isn’t disappointed in him and that he accepts and loves him for who he is. But instead, if Macin is alive and saw that his dad isn’t participating in the search, it sends the message that his dad doesn’t really care that he’s gone and is still disappointed in him.. which is why he wanted to run away in the first place.

When I was Mason's EXACT age (17 and in my senior year of HS) my parents were so controlling I ran away from home. They took my car away and I had never had a cell phone before. They took my car away because I had to take my sister to school (who's four years younger) and her school started at 8 but (I was so advanced I could have graduated of my junior year and my parents didn't let me) I didn't have to go to school until 11 a.m. but my parents expected me to wait at school until my classes started. So one day I was so bored I went to the Catholic Church across the street to pray and my parents (who had a tracking device on my car) found out and sold the truck my grandfather had given me. I felt so depressed and I had no control over my life so I ran away from home and got married at 17! Just to escape them. (In my state 17 is an adult and I'm allowed to do whatever). I was a good kid who never went out at all, never drank, got straight A's, cleaned the house and did all my chores, never partied, never argued or talked back to them, I wanted their approval so badly I literally never did anything wrong ect. I felt so suffocated and unfairly persecuted for no reason. So I called my guy friend up to see if I could live with him and if he would have said no I was secretly determined to kill myself, but he said yeah I could stay with him and we ended up married. My parents ruined my life. I had a full ride to university due to my grades and credits and ACT score my junior year but they wouldn't let me go. So I left that night. I legitimately would have killed myself if my guy friend wouldn't have been able to let me live with him. I didn't want to live like that anymore. I felt I had nothing to live for and no matter how perfect I was it was never perfect enough. It was my parents fault. Not saying it was Mason's parents fault exactly but....... If they had treated him with respect like the adult he was, he wouldn't have run away or, God forbid, have committed suicide. Hindsight is 20/20. Don't smother your kids. You will drive them to do ANYTHING to escape. Let them make their own decisions and own mistakes at that age. Learn a lesson form Mason's story AND my story. Don't be a smother. Be a supportive parent who allows their child to be themselves.

Parents also hear left, right, and center how abusers can access their kids and are under huge pressure to protect them. They also were taught values that matter and know more than teenagers in one aspect or another. BUT: restricting internet access that severely for a good, almost adult student without any reason is way too much. That moved towards coercive control. His depression should have been treated more extensively, too.

It's so kind, loving and thoughtful of Tracie to put an anime/manga-style drawing of Macin on the bench they had put up in his memory, it honestly brings tears to my eyes. I made a report on a potential sighting and will say I’m disappointed with the conversation. Not sure if they were busy but legit feel like they rushed me off the phone. I had more details to give and she just asked me what city and state. I live in Ventura County, ca and work for human services agency and know how important reporting is. I even reached out to the mom and offered to give details but didn’t hear back from anyone. This was a year ago same week of the comicon convention. I understand the possibility of false sightings but this guy stood out to me.I remember this case when Danielle covered it and it hit my heart bc my son has a speech impediment. I explained to the officer that He caught my attention bc he was super tall and wasn’t dressed for the area. Very pale skin and seemed like he was red tanned around the nose and cheek area. Like he had been walking in the sun a lot- like a transient. Made his blue eyes stand out a lot. I was driving and even turned back to do a double look but was on a one way street and took some time to get back. It was near a bus and train station. I pray he is found, his family and mom are in my prayers. 💛

It sounds like he used anime and internet to supplement the social interaction he wasn’t getting in the real world. Having that taken away from him must have caused a lot of stress. My first instinct was that maybe he was talking to someone, and maybe he went to meet them. I hope that’s the case, because voluntarily running off without his wallet, phone, belongings, and no ability to drive would have put him in a very difficult place. But voluntarily running away to be with someone you met on the internet can be really dangerous if you’ve deleted all record of it, too. It’s possible he met with foul play.

This hurt deeply to watch. As an abuse survivor myself also raised in a cult, there are so many red flags in this story. The quiet kid, who doesn't connect well with others, well behaved, his family moving countries. The anime character on the bench dedicated to him is really a slap in the face to Macin. This FB group posted at the end is a huge phishing scam filled with abusive parents. Never give ANYONE you don't know information about someone. This video seems to focus a lot on the internet being shut off bit, but I can assure you that this sort of control goes way beyond a parent taking their (not child's) internet away. He has run away before, and has been hospitalized with depression. He is not feeling validated or loved. I hope Macin is doing well, and managed to get his identification and get his life to e he is truly free, and I hope that people will let it go, and let him go. I hope he has found a new name, and a new life.

It was the 70’s so there wasn’t anywhere for my parents to go to get me help. I know it was hard for them because they didn’t want to push me in the wrong direction if that makes sense. Another thing I realize he was 17 but one of the parents should’ve checked on him in the mornings even if it was to just tell him good morning. Maybe that’s old fashion but I don’t know. He’s still a kid. I definitely think he and his dad didn’t mesh well together. Two men in the same house wanting control with the father being a man’s man and very dominant. Not a good mix at all.

I live in Los Angeles, CA & everytime I encounter a homeless person or just see random homeless out on the streets especially in downtown, I always try to look closely to make sure they aren't a missing person. Majority of the time it is very hard to really observe though because yes like you said, their looks can change. Also, i'm not sure why, but Macin's smile looks really really familiar

One thing I found sus was that the mom found the suicide note AFTER the police had already searched the wallet. If she was involved with his disappearance, she could have faked the note to try to throw the police off her trail. Just a thought.

Macin running away and taking *nothing* with him makes no sense. Darrin being angry with his son, losing his cool, punching him and causing Macin to fall and hit his head then Tracey helping cover up the death however, makes perfect sense.

@@sharpedge3355 I will say, my husbands wallet is just a basic one from Walmart but has DO MANY POCKETS. I’ve had to ASK HIM where his money was in it bc i couldn’t find it 🥴 I think it has like 7-8 different pockets. ^but that means nothing towards any theories other than it is possible to miss things in wallets (or I’m just dumb AF lmao)

This. I had a pretty rough childhood and had issues with anxiety, depression and was diagnosed with PTSD in my teens, and my mother found great pleasure in taking away the things I used to cope with her controlling and emotionally abusive behaviour. Music and reading were what kept me from spiralling into dark depressions. She used to confiscate my CD player and take my books away to "control" my behaviour. I was a straight A student, I raised my brother and sister while she was getting drunk every night and weekend. My only real behavioural moments were when she tried to psychologically terrorise my siblings, she didn't like that.

I find it so odd that the bench in his honour has dates on it. I get that they want to get his name out there but the dates make it seem like he’s passed on, not that he’s a missing person that people need to keep an eye out for. Super weird to me.
@purikiss9912

The anime-style art of him distracted me at first but when I saw the dates, that makes me feel really weird. Also the idea of a "final search". In some way I can imagine feeling so hopeless that you do just want to move on, but also, I feel like that could be a sign that they already know he won't be found and are tired of "fake" searching and keeping up some kind of act. Really can't judge without knowing the parents, though.
@x271295

Dea yeah it all points towards them knowing he won’t come home alive. Very weird, but that could just be their way of coping I guess. As you said, we don’t really know the parents so it’s just guessing games!

That really rubbed me wrong. Why is there at death date there? Why didn’t they write Missing date: ____. It seems to me that she might know he’s gone and that bench is to ease her guilt and feel that a peice of him lives on. I hope justice is done if that Dad did somehting and Mom knows about it.... I found their story about the day he went missing to be really suspicious. Also finding all his stuff “later” including ID and note in his wallet. I feel the Fam planted ALL OF THIS! I just don’t trust the circumstances being presented. Doesn’t add up to me. I felt it as soon as she started talking about his final day and that neither of them physically saw him that day but they assumed he made the bus. THEN it starts coming out through interviewing bus driver and school that he never made it that day. I feel a hundred percent that they already KNEW he didn’t make the bus or school that day. How do BOTH of them hear him but not see him? It’s just way off to me. I felt it right then.

Exactly. Is this one of those things that’s hiding in plain sight? You would surely put ‘missing since…’ not what looks to be a death date.

Almost every man in Utah is at least 6' tall. (hyperbole, but close :)) It's an antidote my dad loves to tell and it's quite true. My dad was born in Salt Lake City. He is 6'4" and over 200 lbs. Anytime he flies an airplane to any city outside of Utah, when everyone stands up in the aisle, he can see above the heads of everyone on the plane. But everytime he flies into Utah, when everyone stands up, he can't see past their heads anymore. This has been true for decades. I find it quite quaint. 😊

I don’t think he was murdered tbh It sounds like he wanted to escape and ran away and start new. Maybe things didn’t go as he planned and he ended up homeless or not fully aware of where he is and that he’s considered missing?or he’s just great at hiding.
