One of the best Star Trek episodes ever. Brings back a lot of good memories. Star Trek the old series is my favorite. The new stuff cannot compete with or be compared to the original.
@cjones37102 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Next Generation and Deep.Space are good, So.was Enterprise. But this new alternative liscense Star Trek is poorly written , and often immoral bases on how the crew treat each other. Just a mess that discovery show and picard that cartoon one is low brow humour
@luthermcgee37676 ай бұрын
@@cjones3710 , yeah, and bad comedy. Bill shattner was able to be quite thorough and vitally descriptive in his own right. Something about how Gene Roddenberry wouldn't have approved of a ton of elements written in the later scripts.

Some years ago I attended a screening of both Trek pilots at the Director’s Guild in Los Angeles. Sally Kellerman was there, and looking very recognizable. She mentioned that she hadn’t watched “Where No Man Has Gone Before” since it originally aired in 1966, and thought it was actually pretty good!

That exterior shot near 2:37 is one of my favorites from the series. I prefer it to the remastered version. Thanks for sharing the original.

Yeah, that's solid. I hadn't realized the lack of detail on the original model though.
@moso299 Жыл бұрын
@@jonny-b4954That’s actually from the opening of The Cage (cut off before it zooms into the transparent bridge ceiling). I also prefer it to the new version. It shows the ship’s name and number, a reminder that this is supposed to be a powerful ship that’s being battered, not a little science vessel.

The FX in this episode are so much better than the remastered version. The energy barrier in the original version almost seemed like it was literally alive and was just rippling with energy!! You could tell just by looking at it that it was something dangerous!

Did they ever say what the barrier was made of and whether it still exists?

I don't understand why they didn't keep Gary Lockwood in the series. A very charismatic and capable actor. Such a shame he was a one-off. And yes this was the best episode.

The 2nd episode shaown in the first season. Plot:find wreckage - detect unknown 'stuff' ahead - plunge in - create drama - etc; 1960's style television trope. Spock shouting brought over from the pilot to eventually be toned down as his character's nature grew established as more composed.

Actually it was the 3rd episode shown. It followed 'Man Trap' and 'Charlie X'.

The "force field around the galaxy" idea has to be one of the most -- unreasonable -- ideas ever.
@michaelmatheny39273 ай бұрын
No. Not unreasonable at all. The various fields around this galaxy are somewhat resemblant to the Van Allen fields around the Earth. They serve a very real physical purpose. Not only in our tangible physica, but also, all the way up to the meta-physical threshold. Meta-physics, while completely-... see-able at its first levels with our own eyes, is almost completely ignored by mankind. Even though we can physically see its beginnings. It's just not 'physical' enough for our psychological limitations. However, back on point, My Friend, these fields or 'belts', if you will, serve quite the physical purpose unbeknownst to man on Earth. You see, they protect the Earth, and again outward around our galaxy, in at least dual ways. Not only do they protect us from 'exterior invasion',,, from whatever the sources or subjects may be, but also are they placed there by THE MAKER OF ALL THINGS, to keep people like myself, and my singularity/sentience/consciousness, to be contained/locked within.

It’s exciting, and Spock was an excitable character back in his youth. They do mention that he’s not supposed to have feelings, but he clearly does (which he acknowledges at the end).

I'm watching this for the first time on Netflix, and I had to stop to see how the original version looked because what they have on streaming is an HD remastered with the special effects changed. Looks better but I think some of the charm's lost.

Did you notice that "Commander" Kirk wasn't wearing captain rank? Why were they so lazy in the beginning?
@Jman7133 Жыл бұрын
Gene barely had enough money to do a second pilot after NBC rejected "The Cage". They reused as much as they could, including the single/double rank stripes. In this episode, 2 stripes is Captain, 1 stripe is any other officer rank, and no stripes is an Ensign or enlisted folks. Once the series got greenlit, they had money to do the proper Gold/Red/Blue uniforms we're accustomed to.
