Texas hunters eliminate 180 feral hogs, including 74 in a single night.
This video illustrates the severity of the feral hog problem in Texas. It is also intended to help educate viewers on some of the current technology and methods that farmers, ranchers, and other private citizens are utilizing to manage this problem.
The video contains direct comparison footage of traditional Gen 3 night vision/image intensification, digital light-amplification, and various thermal imagers.

Why do We Hunt Feral Hogs?
Feral hogs are a non-native and invasive species in the United States. Each year hogs cause billions of dollars in damage in the form of damaged crops, contaminated water supplies, broken equipment, transmission of diseases and injury to livestock.
Feral hogs compete with native wildlife for resources and also prey directly on the eggs and young of ground nesting birds and will actively hunt small mammals, frogs, lizards and snakes.
With no natural predators, the feral hog population has remained largely unchecked and continues to grow exponentially.
Due to their intelligence, adaptability, and prolific breeding habits, traditional methods of hunting and trapping have been largely ineffective in reducing the feral hog population. Since hogs are mostly nocturnal, they are able to utilize the cover of darkness to feed and travel from place to place while avoiding frequent contact with humans.
In recent years, however, technological advances have resulted in the increased availability and affordability of night vision and thermal optics, giving citizens a new tool to help mitigate the destruction caused by feral hogs.
Feral swine are not considered game animals in Texas and may be hunted by any means or methods at any time of year.

Estimated 6 million wild hogs in the US increasing at about a 20% rate every year. But there aren’t enough hunters to keep up with the rate of increase year after year. The feral hog problem is terrible in a lot of the US (mainly texas), but great job to you guys putting a little dent in it here and there. These hogs are smart critters and get educated with every experience they have with trapping and/or shooting... just wondering if using silencers would delay their 'automatic scattering' at the sound of gunfire, so as to be better able to pick a few more off before they bolt - I think using silencers would bring a higher kill ratio. BTW, it would be good to know that these kills are filling up some deep freezers --- either way, keep up the good work boys!
@seanblack9085
@seanblack9085 Жыл бұрын
Silencers would work at longer distances, and maybe give you a second or more to get onto another hog but it would likely only work at longer distances, 200 or more and at that point it would be more efficient to be as close as these guys are, to give you a lot of time while they are running away and easier targets to shoot

In the early 90s in Germany on the tank ranges we used to get an arv with a massive spotlight and sit on the bucket with 3 gpmgs and bag a few hogs even seen a couple get hit with a hesh round and apfds on night shoots great fun

Gotta say, the ratting videos are a lot more satisfying to watch. This looks like a visual arts project; just a jumbled mess of angles, colours, psychedelics, daytime/nighttime, hunter, photographers, prey, all randomly piled together.

This was back in the fifties. I still have that gun today. I need to make a new foregrip and do some work on the ejector, it's just worn out. The gun still shoots as good as ever. You just have to pull the spent shells out. After all the gun is somewhere between eighty and one hundred years old. I hope my newer guns last that long.

This is really one of those challenging situations which require intense management, but l hope that this should instead be called Harvest time as am sure the pork is put to good use. Everything managed in balance. Gentlemen well done for the support you are giving to the farmers.

@omnomshibob
@omnomshibob 2 жыл бұрын
@@lmcwill0502 yes it can. I've looked into it and I can hunt warthogs in Africa for less money than hogs in Texas! I have to pay a trophy fee for any hog over 100lbs, only get 2 hogs and have to pay extra for more, can't shoot sows, etc etc etc. It's beyond a joke, hogs aren't pests to these people, they're cash cows.

@@omnomshibob what? One of my coworkers has an uncle with some land down there, we're gonna go later this month and my understanding is not only can we bag as many as we want, the county will actually pay us $5-6 a head. The uncle isn't making a business out of killing hogs, true, but surely there's someplace that'll let ya do it without paying out the nose?

@@magmat0585 almost definitely mate, but whoever they are they don't advertise on the Internet. I think the only way forward is via a personal invitation and that's not very likely to happen.
