Regarding a new puppy from my experience (mini dachshund) with the crate we put her straight in the place where I wanted her to be in the lounge. Since we are in a townhouse I have neighbours that I don’t want to put though the annoyance of a crying puppy. It’s hard graft but it took about a week of diligence. every time the puppy made a peep, Instantly she goes outside for potty. No love, no pats, no cuddles. any crying would instantly get the result of going outside for toilet then straight back to the crate. This reinforced that if she cry’s she can go to the toilet but nothing more. First few nights I was like a yo-yo. Crying go outside, crying go outside. I didn’t get much sleep but we have only had her for just over a week now and she’s now only up once for potty (when she cry’s) during the night and quiet for the rest. Don’t get mad at the puppy just be repetitive and consistent and you will get the results pretty quick. Hard graft early on and reap the reward. She’s hard work but a cutie 🥰

I appreciate what you’re saying and totally understand it… unfortunately but FORTUNATELY! I got my darling girl well before this video. You didn’t say anything wrong and I was very lucky! My girlfriend slept (cuddled) with me from day one, and we were all overjoyed! She did bark at strangers, and couldn’t get her to stop and yes, separation barked to go outside, which amazed me, but I remembered the saying “don’t shitz where you sleep,” and loved her for it. She did bark constantly at strangers or during separation anxiety… even while she was swimming in the bath or the lake, which is where I lost her. Yes, devastating! I thank you for your videos and your care regarding these beautiful animals!

I struggle with evenings because I really love to cuddle her on the bed early evening. She is so good with sleeping in the crate during the day (she often just wanders off and goes to sleep), but when she is put in her crate for lights out and she sees me on the bed, all hell brakes loose! It’s day 9 and she is good at staying at the end of the bed throughout the night but recognise this is perhaps not the best approach..

We are trying the tough love approach, we’ve had our puppy for about 6 weeks. It doesn’t seem to be working. He has a meltdown every night when we put him in his crate and still has accidents in his kennel even when we wake up and take him out when he whines. He’s not afraid of his kennel, he’ll go in and out happily during the day when it’s open... help!!

As a previous owner of 5 Dachshunds, I can tell you that the ONLY place any Dachshund should sleep is in your bed and under your covers. You may want to get some type of baby holder that keeps the baby Dachshund close to your body while you do your daily chores. Something like a papoose but on your front. This way your puppy will feel secure and loved while it sleeps.

That sounds nice and all, but that's a sure way to develop big separation anxiety issues in the future. Puppys should learn how to settle themselves, and be able to sleep away from the family, so when we need to leave them (they can't come everywhere) it's not as stressful for them.
