This one shows what the best place in the structure is best for the space thermostat. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

Another place to avoid placing a thermostat is anywhere close to ducts that are inside of a wall. Run the heat for a few minutes, then feel the wall. Keep the thermostat away from any warm spots in the walls. This is particularly a problem in two story houses because there are nearly always ducts that run vertically through interior walls to feed the 2nd story registers. A flue pipe might also run vertically though a wall, and that can generate enough radiant heat to affect a nearby thermostat.

Can you help me, GFM? I'm a layman. I live in a semi attached. My thermostat is very close to the party wall (warmth from neighbor). There are no windows to allow sun to fall on the thermometer. It is also about 24 inches above the pipes supplying the kitchen sink (hot water!). I leave the thermostat at 77, and its own thermometer reads 67. However, my freestanding thermometers, nearby, read 59 in the winter mornings, and maybe 62 after the sun rises. (I live in the Northeast. Our winters are still cold.) The house is built on a concrete slab. There is no basement, and the furnace is by the front door. It's been checked by a pro, and runs very well. After seeing your video, common sense tells me to have the thermostat moved to the other side (the cold side) of the house, open area under the staircase, no doors, on the opposite side of the toilet (cold water) in the half bathroom. Good idea? By the way, which tradesman does this: plumber, HVAC, etc? Thanks SO much!
