Jill - you are such a treasure! If you get sick enough of the cold weather, buy a plane ticket to Arizona! ☀️😎🌵. I am a grandma, the same age, & have three empty guest rooms. We could have so much fun in our nice 70 degree weather. I would LOVE to have a friend like you.

Leaving the kitchen clean & dining table cleaned off every night. Waking up to those areas cleaned in the morning is so much more enjoyable and motivating to get other things done during the day.

I agree with you Rhonda. Can't imagine coming down in the Morning, to an upside down Kitchen. 😕 I've got Family members who don't even have an inch of cleared space on their worktops, to even make a Sandwich. Yuck. Take care of you & yours Rhonda. ❤🙂🐶

I have to clean out my house and outbuildings. I lost my husband and I need to down size. On top of that my Dad died and I have a house full of stuff and outbuildings there to do something with. I finally decided and made a new years resolution to throw away at least one thing every day. Holding strong so far.

What I did with my children's hand made pictures, drawings, crafts is I taped all I could on the wall. I organized them by child and arranged them in a way that appealed to me then I took a picture of groups. Thus I have pictures of those memories without the burden of boxes of them taking up room and or deteriorating in the attic.

Lovely show ladies. I hope this might help someone. For years I held onto special baby, little girl outfits, Easter, party dresses and shoes. I found the right family to donate these precious items to: young refugee family from Iran. They were so thrilled to get these party clothes that they sent me photos of the little girl modelling her new things. The smile on that child warmed my heart; she was the happiest girl on the face of the earth that day.

About making that bed ..... when we unavoidably ended up with a bed against one wall, I got a flat top sheet one size bigger then the bed; that worked so well, I worked on gravitating to larger blankets too. They stay tucked in better.

To the kitchen lady with the small house, I too had a small kitchen space, I got a floor to ceiling cabinet and bought an 8in one appliance that replaced, a steamer, slow cooker, soup maker, rice cooker, it now fits snug in my space and also bakes a semi decent cake.. getting rid of and pairing down items that I a.never used,b had 3 of, c, didnt like or were broken. Got rid of a lot ( I mean a lot) of plastic containers, bought a full set of folding containers instead. Gave away heavy pots n pans, kept only what I new I’d use.. now, everything has a space, it gets used..then put back and I do not bring anything else in.. I don’t need it..

I love you gals. My mom was a hoarder and a drug addict and . . . nightmare. And brutally insulting, so for YEARS i felt paralyzed and **incapable** of doing even basic stuff well. Nightmare stuff, there. But by the Grace of God, bit by bit I've been getting better. I wish it had come sooner, when my girls were small, but better late than never. I moved with a bare minimum of stuff, two years ago, to another State, and I LOVE my life down here. And my home. Having piano students in my home is not a source of humiliation, and friends' visits are a joy. And they seem to like coming over.so I must be doing something right. And with my DOAD cookbook my next goal is getting good at cooking. THANK YOU!!! for your part of all this.

Regarding throwing out ugly things ( which may or may not include husbands….lol) -- My favorite radio pastor, the late J. Vernon McGee, liked to tell an anecdote about an old maid. Someone asked her why she never married and she replied, “Why do I need a husband? I already have a parrot who swears, a stove that smokes and a dog who lays around all day!” I believe there was more to the saying, but I’ve forgotten. My 82 year old mother got such a chuckle out of this. Great and inspiring video! Thank you so much 🌺

I don't call myself a hoarder , I am a collector. I tend to make greeting cards for my friends and family , so needless to say I tend to collect all kinds of paper cutting dies, different colored paper , and all things I can use to make my greeting cards. However, I do organize these things, yet when it comes to it I do have a lot . So I have decided not to buy any more things that have to do with making my greeting cards. At least until I can make room for it where it will be organized . I have come to the conclusion that I am addicted to buying more things for making cards than anything else. It brings me and who ever I give a cards I've made a whole lot of JOY !!! I really Love your program you and your Mom are just so Awesome !!! Keep up the good work.

If the craft or sewing "stuff" isn't gathered, sorted, or ideally organized i begin with a box of snack, sandwich, quart, and gallon resealable, clear plastic bags. I follow up with free cardboard boxes as needed. Then I start with one surface, or category of surface, at a time; or even a box or tote. I expect to do upto many, many sorts over the course of time, upsize any plastic bag or other storage item as like items are gathered, expect to sub-divide my gathered "like" items into more refined categories (typically as baggies are filled, and count all gathered "like" items in a bag or box as being one step closer to organization whether I stop or not. I also expect to switch up the approach or strategies upto mid sorting session.
@terryhenderson424
@terryhenderson424 2 жыл бұрын
In the craft area, I often look abiut me too to see what's sitting out and on top all over or in an area. For me its often writing implements and note pads/ pieces of paper. So, a "task" may be pick up all the visible writing tools and out them in a pile with all of the pads or paper in another pile. From there its sort the writing tools into the already bagged categories; and bag them in thier new, temporary-permenant home. Or simply throw them in a bigger bag for later sewing. I generally begin going through boxes one at a time sorting each individually and then condensing two or more at once part way through the process. In "condensing" I'm simply grouping similar items between the two or three boxes into a single bag or small box then figuring which of the boxes will hold which bag (or small box). Sometimes ill begin a new box or area surrounded on floor or table top by previously grouped baggies. I pile in front of the baggies until done or its clear I need to sub-categorize. Using writing implements, often it begins as a big pile but breaks down to a baggie of ball point, perma marker, colored pencils, mechanical pencils, white board pens, and pencil sharpener pencils; watching TV is a good time to test and discard pens which no longer work.

Thank you very much for the tips. My wife and I have a small 2 bed 2 bath and 2 young daughters, 5 and 2. We are in cleaning rut. We constantly feel run down from work and entertaining the girls. Because of this, our home is incredibly disorganized. There is no excuse and I want our girls to be proud of their clean and organized home. I don't want them to develop lazy habits. Little by little we hope to get our house back. Thanks for the videos. Have a great day!

You got it: little by little. One room at a time! Perhaps you can address 1 room/ space at a time? Example, on Mondays I do every kitchen only. Any mail that has accumulated on the counter any old or expired food in the refrigerator and wiping down those shelves and counter tops- addressing only that space. Tuesday is everything family room: toys, throws, vacuum, dusting. And each day once you're done with that space that's it. This worked for us because as we cleaned and purged there was less the following week- routine was now in place. Hope this helps and good luck!

Something I have learned in another decluttering and organizing group is when you clean out a drawer or an area, if there is something that doesn't belong in that area, take it where it does belong right now. If you get interrupted from your cleaning/organizing, the area is not more of a mess than when you started. I have really enjoyed following your channel. Thanks for all you do!

Great video. I have done 3 major pare-downs for moving. It’s amazing how much stuff I kept out of guilt or simply because I spent a lot of money on it. I still have some clutter to address but for the most part we are neat and tidy in our 900 square foot house. Since we do laundry on Wednesday and Saturday I only kept 2 pairs of jeans and 4 tops per season, 4 sets of scrubs for work, and 3 outfits for dress-up occasions. But I’m a crafter and I like to cook, so there’s issues there.

What I did with my kids awards and important papers from school that they did not want is I started a family scrapbook. I took the papers and made them smaller on a copier and put them in the scrapbook and their trophies that they didn't want I took pictures of and did the same. That way they were in one book and they could look at them and remember, but we did not have the clutter around! I included a lot of old family pictures (made them smaller if necessary) and we had them all in one place to look at. It not only was fun to do, but it turned out really nice and attractive and solved a lot of clutter issues! I hope this might help others. 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Trashcan wise we have the small desk size 🗑️ trashes in every room PLUS a small recycle bin in the kitchen and an 8 gal recycle bin by the door. (We religiously sort! We have 2 recycling bins and 1 trash bin - in our town the recycling bins are a free service included in the trash bill but you have to pay extra for a 2nd TRASH bin. So it saves us $ especially since recycle only gets picked up 2x a month) The trash goes out as soon as it's full, about half the time my 8yrold son takes it out once in awhile my 7yr old daughter does it (usually goes out at night before bed an she's scared of the dark so she mostly just gets the odd daytime trips) &we use the plastic store bags bc I refuse to pay for something 100%meant to be thrown away.

Begun years and years ago when house work often took a second burner to assignments and deadlines, if things get out of hand I often begin in the most organized, ordered, and least cluttered area. And yes, I will also go about for the "easy pickings" such as things that can "go away" in a garbage bag, dishes which can go to the kitchen sink area, clothing to the laundry (or a quickly created) pile, shoes to thier home, etc.. Whether its the highest priority load or not, as soon as an easy but full load is gathered and identified (laundry or dishes) I start them so they can be started, ready for the next step, and be put away by the time that area is being worked on. - I "count" what is completed and done rather than what needs to be done.

I find donating stuff to people who are not family and can use it helps he let go of things. My husband also had been known to sell things online in groups of 2 or 3 and “package” them for the buyer to take them all.

for safety and to build trust ....When helping elderly parents clear clutter its important to try to keep everything you keep in similar areas. As in don't decide toilet paper should go in a different cabinet or change pots and pans to different cabinet. Even if it makes sense elderly rely on habit more than they even know or are willing to admit. Sometimes we don't notice it. But once you change pots from their 20+ year location your parents will get confused. Especially consider things will become dangerous like maybe mom.can get on a stool for the pot she only uses once a month but one day getting on that stool becomes a danger and you wont know until the bad fall happens. Especially if you have parents that insist on being self reliant. Their habits of how they do things is all they have. And yep sometimes it means opposite, pick ypur battles and see how much change is reasonable for the persons ability to adjust.

Thanks Ladies. This is a bit off topic, however wondering if you've ever tried a cost saving homemade automatic dishwashing recipe? I ran out of my regular dry dish cleaning powder & am trying one using salt, baking soda & 3 drops of dawn. Hoping this will work well. I dont know about using this for the long run. Thoughts?

Moms of recent history have been sold this idea that they have to do it all. Truth is unless someone cleans and organizes their own things, they will never learn the process of how to do it. That is how all of us learn how to do it. It is tempting as moms to do everything just get it done without 'nagging' at someone, or thinking we are helping someone if we do it for them. That might be true the first or second time since we need to show someone (kids) the best and easiest way to accomplish the task. (Nothing worse than expecting kids to know how to organize and clean if parents don't show them or if parents don't know how to do it either.) After that though, cleaning and organizing for someone else only serves to rob them of the opportunity of going through the process themselves in order to achieve a very fulfilling sense of accomplishment once they go through it and see the results of their clean organized space.

I clean 2 hrs a day with 3 kids, a husband , a dog and cat. It doesn’t bother me at all bc over the years I trained myself to start in the morning when the kids get off to school and I’ll be done before 11am.

I have a problem with decluttering, my grandkids try to get me to recycle my smaller appliances all the time. They say you never use them, but I do. They just don't like that I have them and want them themselves. About ready to declutter my house of my grandkids so I can keep my kitchen intact. I also collect cookbooks, I have about 1,000 digital ones and maybe down to 100 hard copies. Most of them are the little ones that come from family reunions, churches, and other organizations, as well as the biggies... lol I also have a copy of one of the first cookbooks made in America. I love my books. I told them they can deal with them when I die, not before. I plan to donate my cookbooks to the library (they are in great shape), when I am older... lol I'm only 67. They love my cooking, they just don't respect my belongings. They need to declutter their stuff and leave mine alone. My appliances are in cupboards and my cookbooks are in my bookcase. Now if they want to declutter anything else I would be glad of the help. But they always want to start in my kitchen.

Respectfully, this made me think of my mom's collection. She has a lot and I do not want most of them. I'll ask her to list her favorites for me though, but I would definitely donate the rest.

Wish I could stop the cats from jumping on the kitchen bench. So unhygienic! I am forever wiping with Dettol wipes. We had a storm event last March where water came into the house and saturated the carpet. It had to be ripped up and the house dried out, mould remedial, etc. The upshot of this is we got rid of unwanted furniture. Very little clutter now. New floor layed with Duraplank, so easy to keep clean and free of bacteria. The five-minute rule as outlined by Jill is good. When I was undergoing chemo I was so exhausted most of the time that the five-minute rule really worked for me. I remember having to mow (ride-on) the property on a day when I was particularly exhausted, but I persevered. Love your advice, Jill. Now I engage a contractor to do the mowing and whipper-snipping, paid for by the government (we are elderly). By the way, I find that smaller bags of trash fit better, and you can fit more into your wheelie-bin. Where we live in Australia we have one pick-up a week early on Tuesday morning. At mark 43:00 that describes our place!

My pet pee is when people live in a house and to lazy to pick up or clean the bathroom up . But I live with 3 men lol. My grandson can be a pain with Autisum but he dose pick his room up when you tell him .

I am about to donate dishes. I have a china cabinet filled with vintage, maybe antique floral dishes I collected some time ago. They make you yearn for a simpler time. However they don't get used. 🤔 Time to donate most. 😪
