I had some friends over one night recently and they find it pretty odd that I am such a Super Famicom/Nintendo fan, but nobody was bored with 4 player Bomberman and Tiny Toons Wacky Sports Challenge (dotabata daiundoukai in Japan) - everybody had such a great time. I just love the simplicity of the gaming and I guess it's my age but I still think the graphics and sound are amazing :)

The SFC/SNES had some classics. If you REALLY wanna jazz things up (and have the cash to do so and have a bunch of micro-USB to Type-A cables that can plug into an external power supply), get the SNES Brook Wingman Adapters for each controller port. This will let you use most modern USB controllers + arcade sticks, so if your friends are more comfortable with modern form factor or want to feel like they're playing on an arcade cabinet, it really adds to the experience. The external power supply isn't needed for 2p action, but you will need it if you use the Multitap.

In bomberman 4 you can use bosses in multiplayer and use special abilities like: shoot a column of fire, travel the entire scene using a jet pack (if you touch a enemies, he dies) and things like that

We used to gamble on Super Bomberman 2 during shop class in highschool. That game funded so many hours at the arcades. Side note: Winning the boots is not O.P., Winning the gloves is.

I played through Secret of Mana with three people. We had a lot of fun, but I can't recall anything about the story. It's really hard to enjoy the story and get immersed in the world when you have to share the experience like that, with other people who may not be as in to the story as you are.

My brother, friends and I play Madden NFL '98 with the multitap. We can have all five of us on the same team at the same time and it's extremely worth while.

Fun fact: The SNES was actually capable of listening to eight controllers at a time, though no games were ever made that would be able to take advantage of it. If a Multitap had 8 ports, the SNES would have been able to handle it. This gets put to use in arbitrary code execution in Super Mario World and a few other interesting cases.

Awesome list, man. I have most of these but, you turned me on to a few. Tetris 3 and Top gear 3000 are on the list now for sure. The tennis game looks pretty good too; was always a fan of mario tennis for n64. I just wish it wasn't so hard to have 4-5 friends who play SNES in the room at the same time. :/

Great that you mention Slammasters. It is an awesome 2v2 fighting game. Be sure to grab the PAL version of Slammasters. The US version I tested had slowdowns, which the PAL version did not. The only other 4-5 player game from my childhood is Lord of the Rings, but you better stay away from that one. Firstly, you need to play for a long time to get 5 playable characters. Secondly, it sucks, except for the music.

Super Bomberman 3 was pretty much the game I played most on my SNES. Love it. Especially when you get invincibility where you can spam bombs while getting hit by a blast and you can pretty much blow your self up while moving around as a fireball of death.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is 2 player only. It is not compatible with the multitap, contrary to rumor... but you'd need two people willing to get down on this awesome RPG with you to do this lol. Still, a great 2 player only RPG.

I should add that I LOVE SNESDrunk and don't want to come across as a jerk nerd saying "well actually", but don't want any body to be embarrassed when they try to play Seiken Densetsu 3 with two buddies. Actually had two people over to do this and specifically bought a multi tap to do it... we had to play secret of mana instead because sd3 is not 3 player. It is a popular misconception/assumption.

This list makes me wish there were more 4-player games on the SNES, and sometimes even the NES. Despite them both having accessories that allow for more players, they don’t often go used. Sure, there are the sports games and party games like the ones seen here, but that’s about it. I’m sure if more home brew developers knew how the multi taps worked, they could make something truly remarkable.

I got my multitap from The Good Guys after seeing Super Bomberman in an ad in the paper for a good deal. When there I asked a rep about the price to make sure, and looking it up on his computer he showed it at an even lower price, and I snapped it up. When I got home, I looked at the receipt and it turns out he rung me up for Bomberman '94 for the TG16 instead. I think the statute of limitations allows me to admit that now. But yeah, that and both Jam titles got a lot of use out of the 'tap.

Bomberman 3 and 4 got PAL releases in Europe. They didn't release in the USA due to the closure of Hudson Soft USA.

Super Bomberman 2 is just brilliant, and also the best looking of the Bomberman games on SNES imo, with characters and backgrounds that actually look a bit shaded and subtly 3D, which all the later games lacked as they went for a more basic cartoony-with-black-outlines look, which I'm not a huge fan of. I also like that it's a bit less bloated with random fluff than the other later games, most of which doesn't actually make the gameplay better imo, although it adds just enough over the first one to make it stand above it. So, for me at least, Super Bomberman 2 is the best of the Bomberman games on SNES.

Also, there is a patch you can apply to "Super Bomberman 4" and play it in FULL ENGLISH (on the RetroN 5 gaming machine). Now, if only someone could translate the last one -- Super Bomberman 5 -- my Bomberman collection would be complete... ;-)

Sure thing! The RetroN 5 will play any Super Famicom games (including translation patches). Just insert the game cartridge in the SNES port. Kunio's Dodge Ball ( Kunio-Kun no Dodge Ball Da yo Zenin Shuugo! ) is a good Japanese one (that's been hacked into English). It might just be my opinion, but I think that Street Racer is an awful game, and not worth your time. The controls are floaty, the attacks are unsatisfying, and the graphics aren't nearly as clean as some other racers.
