In the end, cyanoacrylate (superglue) worked best! It's the only one that actually turned out as strong as the rubber itself, enough to tear it. Jump to the winner: • Which adhesive works B...

Rubber type adhesives dont bond well to most rubber substrates , in fact most types of adhesive dont bond well to most rubber substrates . That being said , anyone who is into gold prospecting knows that non gel type cyanoacrylates (ie; superglues ) bond tenaciously to most rubber substrates as they use it to glue sections of rubber sluice matting together and even though they are edge glued so the surface area is very small the substrate will usually tear before the glue joint fails . Also it should be noted that rubber sluice matts are subject to frequent short term submersion and a high degree of abrasion , even still the joints will often last for years without failing . Just my 2c worth

No offense but you always clean with acetone or lacquer thinner before adhering. Your test wasn't reliable.

Contact cement would've been my pick in this shootout. The caveat of reg. CA is its brittleness.

Cyanoacrylate Super/Krazy glue is more forgiving & works better on unprepared surfaces because it's not as affected by surface contaminates.

Give automotive goop a try for just general rubber to rubber bonding. I fond it works very well. It's also black which is helpful when bonding rubber. Preparation is the most important step when trying to bond rubber. Make sure you strip the surface of any finish, quite often there is a layer of silicone on top. You can use naphtha gas or acetone to prep the surface. Make sure the surface is prepped for adhesion by roughing it up with a roughing tool from a bike tire patch kit or a coarse wire wheel. Sandpaper will contaminate the area. Spray again with acetone and let it flash off. For an easy to access product, try automotive goop. I find it works quite well. Otherwise you can go with something more specialized like a 2 part mix like sika bond R&B-210 which is a product for repairing conveyor belts.

Awesome. The conveyor belt in my house just broke. Now I know what to use. But seriously thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Really

I like your video, straight to the points. Thanks. I don't believe the compound material you used as samples is actually pure rubber. As it doesn't stretch as rubber would do. But that is another debate. Unfortunately, with "world savior" regulations, implied rubber products aren't actually rubber in most cases these days it seems. Unlike in the 80's when rubber was rubber and vulcanising glues actually worked as they were expected on all rubber products. They don't actually work as well or in the same way today. I am having issues myself currently with trying to find an adequate glue that will adhere patches to bicycle inner tubes. Where both the glue isn't bonding nor are the patches of material that allows for stretching when inflated. The tubes are also not all strictly rubber and that depends on the manufacturer you buy from. So the glues of general recommendations don't work on all inner tubes as one would expect. Why, because not all inner tubes are of the same "rubber" compounds these days. If you wanted to take up a challenge for another video, try one on glues and patches for cycling inner tubes that cater for both the adhesion and the stretch and sealing of the patches.

My go-to adhesive is lexel, which is a toluene solvent-based sealant. I put it in a mason jar and add extra toluene. The toluene seems to bite into most rubbers and plastics. This adhesive does take a while to cure but is very flexible and tough.
@Samlol23_drrichАй бұрын
So you’re saying you buy it in a caulking gun type of dispenser and dispense some into a jar and add toluene and use it as a glue? Does it stay soft out of the gun? Thanks in advance. I’ve got so many plastic and rubber things that need to be glued and nothing works well.
@sedevacantist1Ай бұрын
@@Samlol23_drrich Yes, depending on how much toluene you add will depend on how liquid it will be. I have a small mason jar which I have had for years and it is still good. It remains a stiff elastic after the solvent evaporates. It does not stick to silicone and some plastics, I have not tried rubber. I would say if the rubber will partially dissolve with toluene it will work.

Conclusion. Superglue is best for smooth surfaces. Other adhesives are for the rough surfaces,you have to roughen the surfaces first using sand paper for best result
