Which Audi RS3 is Better? 8V vs 8Y Real Differences and Driving Impressions!

👋 After one year of ownership with our 2024 Audi RS3 8Y, lets compare it back to back with the 8V Audi RS3. So these are the two Audi RS3 generations we got here in the US and after owning the 8V Audi S3 and then selling for the new RS3 8Y, here are my thought driving the old RS3 alongside our new RS3. Overall the 8V RS3 looks amazing. Classic styling that is aging very well. The old RS3 has a timeless look on the exterior. I like the silver trim as well on this specific spec. Both RS3 models have the same 2.5L inline 5 cylinder turbo engine with similar figures. You do see a 7 horsepower bump on the new RS3 and 15 lb-ft of torque bump as well. Both have the Quattro AWD system that is front wheel drive biased and the 7 speed DCT. Biggest changes are the interiors. The 8V RS3 is showing it's age for the interior and multimedia screen. The gauge cluster still looks great and modern, but the center screen does look a bit old an the climate control and center console are a bit basic. The 8Y has a nicer multimedia screen and climate control section with better cup holder location and storage. Also the 8Y RS3 seats are more comfortable and supportive will all power control and memory seating. Exteriors have very different front and rear designs with basically the new Audi DNA for the style. Driving the 8y RS3 and the 8V RS3 there is a small difference. The new RS3 is able to ramp up to a next level in performance. The RS Performance mode is new and tightens up the suspension and engine aggression even more then the Dynamic Mode offered on the 8V. Power feels about the same but the new RS3 seems to have a smoother power delivery and transmission. The new RS3 can also tone down even more in comfort mode then the old RS3 and seems to ride slightly better. So overall the new RS3 is not leaps and bounds better. It is a nice upgrade with a bit more performance and a bit better comfort. Would still like the old steering feel in the new RS3, but the new car is a modern update thats fits well.

That's my thought as well. The 8Y.5 is the best of both worlds. I do miss some of the interior bits of the 8V.5 however.

@@speeddemonRS3 Nope, other than the steering wheel and the lack of front batch (which Audi will fix by 2026), the FL 8Y is better than the 8Y in every way. It handles a lot better and looks much better, especially the rear end. Most people hated the rear end of the 8Y, with that ugly fake honeycomb decor. Not only is the 8Y.5 diffuser looks better, it is actually functional with vents.

Yeah I really wouldn't be concerned. Plenty of high mileage RS3's out there. We had our 2016 S3 for two years before buying this and it was well out of warranty and never had an issue.

8V has the better grill and shifter, I like everything else about the 8Y but that doesn’t mean it’s better than the 8V. Both are great.

Both are great for their price points. However when we bought ours, low mileage used 8V's were trading for $65k. So we spent the same and got a brand new one. Even now low mileage 8V's are not far off from newish 8Y's. I like the updates in the new one, just wish the steering was a bit tighter

I have a 2024 in Suzuka Grey and it’s the only 24 in the states with ceramic breaks. I love it. They should have kept the flat bottom steering wheel and the shifter, I can’t stand that chicken nugget. Now if they could just get the ECU unlocked.

Hopefully you can help me with my 2024 RS3. I was wondering what spacers (size & brand) should I use on stock stock setup? Also, my brakes randomly squeak horribly similar to my stock 2020 STi. Does your Audi do the same or is it just mine?

My 24 RS3 is only 3 months old with about 2,500 mi and I'm going through the same thing you are with the squeaking. Driving me nuts! It doesn't happen when I'm braking while driving at speed, but only when I've slowed down to a stoplight, and rolling real slow, if I touch the brakes they squeak so so loud. Many RS3 guys have recommended changing the front pads to either the EBC red stuff ones or Isn't that silly that we get a brand new $70,000 Audi and have to deal with squeaky brakes out of the box? I'm also ready to do my first mod, springs and spacers. H&R sport Springs with 12 mm up front and 15 mm spacers in the rear is what seems to be the most popular fitment. Although I think he did 10mm up front and 15 in the rear from h&R.

@BrosFOURRSpeed definitely will get in touch when I'm ready to order them. I'm in South Florida so we never get any winter or cold weather. I've also heard people mention that they sometimes hear some type of creaking with the h&R Springs. Is that something that you've been privy to at any point? It's just a big job, and it's expensive, so I'd really only want to install the springs once so I really want to get the right ones. Thanks

Definitely on the 8Y side. I am a big fan of the style. The overall feel is a bit lighter if that makes sense but def a car that I enjoy driving. Also get constant compliments.

thank you for the thoughts...been thinking about making the switch after I run through the stock tires, but have run up only 3900 miles in my 14 months of having it (2024 MY)... might be a long while. I live in Virginia... gets too cold for the summer tires about 70-80 days a year

Question, I know some people consider swapping the steering wheel in the 8Y for an 8V Style with push to start also on the steering wheel itself. Would you, or your wife because I know its more of a main daily for her, swap the steering wheel for the older flat bottom style or just keep it current?

I'd love to have a new R8 style wheel in the car. Would be sweet to have the start button the wheel and drive modes with a flat bottom. I doubt we'll do that tho. We're pretty used to it, I can't see spending however much that would cost to change it

Nice comparison. With the two side-by-side, the 8Y does make the 8V look a bit dated (even though I think it still looks superb). Interior wise, the 8V is definitely more ergonomics, but of course it can't beat the tech of the 8Y, and the torque splitter is definitely much better than the haldex.

In person the 8Y actually has better ergonomics and feels much more comfortable and usable. I like the updates for sure overall. But the old car still has some nice elements. Both great for their price points

@ it’s interesting. I don’t get the rubbing all the time sometimes over certain dips in the road. It’ll rub a little and I’m pretty sure it’s those little plastic inserts in the tire while I didn’t do springs on mine just the spacers

Man thats a tough one! Can buy a brand new GRC Premium for the same price as this 8V. RS3 is still more premium and has more power potential. But it would depend if you wanted a new car or used car. I'd probably go brand new GRC just to have a new car vs one with 35k miles. But thats a hard one!

The steering wheel in the new one is larger in diameter, which sucks. I had the old one in my 2019 RS5 (perfection) and the new style in my 2022 RS5 (which coincidentally is the same steering wheel in my Q7 lol). It's way too big for a performance car.

I measured the S3 we had and the RS3 and left to right they were within a half inch actually. But the flat bottom design is nice on the old one

@ exactly, that's what I got as well when I measured. But a half inch combined with the flat bottom makes for a much nicer feeling wheel in the hand (in my opinion). I actually swapped mine out for a flat bottom wheel from a 2023 RS6. It was a nice going back to a flat bottom and getting a nicer leather wrapped airbag cover. I'm very picky about steering wheels (can't you tell? Lol). My current 2024 M3 Competition xDrive just got the new LCI 2025 flat bottom wheel and it's made such a difference!
