Style, fitness, and panache are all considered when we discuss and debate which Bond film each 007 actor looked their best in. A theory is tested in this video, that the second outing for each actor represented their best foot forward due to a series of reasons. Those reasons are explored through evidential discussion and humor filled banter of two Bond fans that agree the point. This is a Bond movie discussion you wont want to miss!

I've always preferred Brosnan's looks in The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day - especially his hairstyle and suits - to his earlier two films. And believe me, I am a Brosnan fan.

Good discussion. But the theory does not hold up for me. Connery looks great in FRWL, but he looks better in Goldfinger. He looks great in his iconic white dinner jacket, and I love the awesome gray suit he wears while imprisoned at Goldfinger's ranch. He's also so comfortable in the role and the film around him--the locations, the girls, and the production design--is so glamorous that it adds to Connery's look. Moore definitely looks his best in TMWTGG, without a doubt. But Brosnan looks his best in TWINE. He's so comfortable in the role, but also his Brioni suits are the most stylish in that film. Dalton looks great in TLD, and Craig looks best in QOS with that awesome casual look, as you say. So really, only Moore looks the best in his second film in my opinion.

Sean Connery looked at his best in Thunderball. No question about it. Look at that scene at the clinic just after he triggered the alarm ("I don't know-could it be the front doorbell?"). Look at Sean's casual poolside attire. It wouldn't look a bit out of place in 2024. Goldfinger just didn't look as cool. It was still very much Fedora hats and baggy suit pants.

@PFNel Yes. You complimented and said it much better than I did. And Sean is in print and in an interview saying "THUNDERBALL" was his favorite. Now, he very much liked FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE, for the same reason the rest of us did; it's fidelity to the Fleming novel (with some notable departures) There is NO argument on what Sir Sean's least favorite was; YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

"When James Bond doesn't look his best, I feel the film drops a little bit because he's not operating at the peak of masculinity," - Kyle. I disagree with this statement. A truly masculine man is not going to worry about his clothing except for the purpose of mission. This is the case in LTK where Bond is operating alone out of vengeance. It would be the more effeminate male whose clothing choices would really matter to him. To be fair, I think I know what Kyle meant. Adding the word "masculinity" throws the meaning off. Without that one word, the sentence works much better. I don't mean to be pedantic, I know it's hard speaking precisely at the best of times, but the idea that Dalton's Bond was less masculine due to his sartorial presentation is a ludicrous statement.

And if I had to pick one, it would be Live and Let Die because I’m not looking at his skin tones but I’m looking at his haircuts. And in LALD I feel he’s got the best clean cut. Timothy Dalton I agree the Living Daylights. Pierce Brosnan again I agree Tomorrow Never Dies. Daniel Craig I would have to say Skyfall. Again just like Roger he has a nice clean haircut. Its styled like that because Bond is acting out a fake persona its a different look, to appear more sinister to fool & win favour with Sanchez. Bond as Bond has a side parting or a less severe look.

There were many strengths to LTK but the weaknesses were mostly technical and aesthetic. Due to having $10m less in the budget than TLD, they had to use a cheeper film stock, they had to over light sets to save time in set ups and they used a lot of 50mm lenses that flatten the image, all TV techniques to save time and money. And yes, we used to buy our suits and jackets one size too big. It took me a long while to get out of that habit having grown up in that era.

May I suggest another theory - perhaps for a future episode. It's based on the question: "Which of each Bond's films is the most memorable?" From a personal stand point, I really really enjoy watching them. But if asked the next day what the plot was, I'd have to answer "no idea, can't rememeber." That, of course, has it's advantages - I can watch them, and enjoy them, over and over. I'm not trying to be negative. I just find it an interesting personal phenomenon. Am I wierd, or is is the same for some others? PS. I entirely agree, with the conclusions of this excellent and entertaining video.

But I'd agree on the the others, with Lazenby being an obvious exception. Craig in particular looked great in QoS, but that's mainly because of the emphasis on his casual wear, which he nailed.

QoS sartorially is my favorite of all the Bond films! Mostly because I can wear all those looks and I'm comfortable in that style. Brosnan dresses like my dad. That being said, I would love for the future Bond to stop with the non English menswear and go back to Saville row suits and casual looks. To be true to the character, Bond who lives in Chelsea, should look like he took a walk down Jermyn Street and did all his shopping in one day. The brands should be all the classics like Turnbull & Asser, Crockett & Jones and Floris etc. His suits should be from Savile Row. Pick someone like Huntsman, Anderson & Sheppard, Gieves & Hawkes or Richard Anderson. Henry Poole & Co might too old school. Make Bond's tailoring British again!

His hair looks its best too. I'm not sure I agree with Brosnan. I'm not into Brosnan's wet hair look. I think he looks best in TWINE all the way. Beyond the clothes, he's so perfectly relaxed in that film too. Craig easily looks his best in Quantum of Solace. His clothes, his physique and how relaxed he is. The hair is better than in Casino Royale too, but not perfect. Though Dalton doesn't have the look right, like all the others he's more relaxed the second time.

The arc of the individual actors across the franchise and hindsight into their sojourns in the role has driven, once again, one of Mr. Zaritsky's splendid videos. But what if it could be the ultimate Bond ensemble? Combining all the elements and all the actors “looks” across all the films? Surely David’s extensive collection could be mined to create such a video? Connery’s suits? Craig’ casuals? Brosnan’s Tuxedos? Moore’s Sportscoats? Lazenby’s….err, kilts? Could be a fun video.

I'm a rare case of liking Brosnan's style best in GoldenEye (yes even the hair). Brosnan naturally looks so clean and polished that those touches in GE added the ruggedness I believe Bond to have. The navy blazer-blue shirt combo and jungle outfit hit this best for me: he's got taste, but threw that stuff on to get on w/the investigation, concerned w/practicality and time vs looking like he's ready for a business meeting. I liked Craig's slow buildup. Started wearing more casual attire, started wearing suits more in QOS before going full Bond style Skyfall onward.

The one look I’ll give Dalton in LTK was his tuxedo/assassin outfit. A nice carryover from TLD. The suit he wears during the tanker chase (and at the Pan Am counter) work but that’s it. The second film usually has a bigger budget, which can mean more for wardrobe. Couple that with the Bond actor, “settling in” can make for great sartorial moments. I’m appreciating Moore’s wardrobe “more and more,” as I re-Watch his films. Nothing too trendy and I agree about his shirts in TMWTGG. Everything in FRWL looks good on Connery, though I’d lean toward Goldfinger for iconic looks. TND carries the 2nd film theory with Brosnan’s outfits. I’ll say it again and often, QOS is a look book with gunfire. It’s a menswear defining film and will continue to be so for years to come! Enjoyed this fully. Kudos to you David and Kyle!

Dalton: The Living Daylights (it's not a home-run like the two aforementioned, but he looks spectacular in the Bratislava tux and in his Tangiers outfits) Brosnan: Tomorrow never dies (tough to choice between his four films, but his long coat at the Hamburg airport gives TND the slight edge) Craig: Spectre (I don't care much about the film itself but his wardrobe is actually pretty flawless, although his first three entries are more than solide too. I have seen Daniel Craig in his first outing as J B and no way is he JB he is a great actor but the film looked like the Bourne Identity with fast over editing and nothing like the look of the rest of the movies.

Well first off, The Bourne Identity had no fast editing. When Greengrass came on to direct in the sequels is when the fast editing and shaky cam was introduced. Craig's first outing was fine and not overly edited. I think you may be confused.

Great discussion as always gents! Yes, Brosnan came into his own sartorially in TND, but my favorite of his in that regard will always be TWINE. There was such a variety of styles and colors which allowed easy replication when I used to wear suits to work in such a diabolical climate as the Southeast US. Two other favorite looks that use similar color ways are from GE. The Bond/Xenia car chase and the Manticore/helicopter sequence. My next N. Peal piece will likely be their homage to that sweater. @thebondexperience and @easysmilesandexpensivewathches a pleasure as always!

I gotta say that the suit that always impresses me in the entire series is Moore's suit in Octopussy when he's at Sotheby's - it's right on the money! Altogether a pretty sound theory for a video (sorry LTK you just luck out 😅)

Great discussion! Hot takes - I also don't mind Dr No's high waisted pants (I know, it's that vintage vibe, what can I say) also QoS - which I love - does have a few casual moments that maybe haven't aged as well as others. The almost boot cut jean is very mid naughties although the TF Harrington is a standout. The shirt under the cardigan sometimes feels too formal for me, if they were going for a Steve McQueen vibe, why not a t-shirt? And imho the Skyfall Scotland outfit is so perfect, I find it difficult to give QOS the Win - at least on the casual side of things - formal wise QoS wins on cuts but SF suits although they were a bit tight they were also beautiful. And I feel SF looks fresher today than QoS. There - I've said it! Now to the sin bin with me.

Sean Connery: "Thunderball"(1965). George Lazenby: "OHMSS"(1969). Roger Moore: "TSWLM"(1977) & "Moonraker"(1979). Timothy Dalton: "TLD"(1987). Pierce Bronsan: "GoldenEye"(1995) & "TWINE"(1999). ***** And the 6th guy... He's not James Bond, I think! He's Jason Bourne 2.0.

Fun episode! I have a bit of a different take. Connery: I have to go 'Goldfinger'. Every outfit he wore from the golf ensemble on and off the course, the long sleeved polo shirt when he was in stealth mode, the white dinner jacket and of course the gray three piece suit, he never looked better. Lazenby: he pulled the blue ski outfit off well. Moore and Dalton: Never liked their look in any of their films. Brosnan: Never looked better or was more Bondian that in 'The World is Not Enough'. Deeply flawed film, but he was completely at home as Bond, was the right age, had the right haircut too. Craig: 'Skyfall'- the suits, the Skyfall outfit, the peacoat, the haircut; Craig figured it out by number three.

So I think it's more random than the Theory of Seconds. Connery-Goldfinger (more at ease, less swarthy cinematography), Moore-LiveLetDie or ForYourEyesOnly - very crisp suits, good lighting, variety of locales. Lazenby's best in the ski-suit---looks like a man on a mission. Not a lot of his wardrobe does that. Dalton in Living Daylights (suits in Licence are horrible). Pierce in GoldenEye I prefer. His other suits seemed a bit shiny and thin? DieAnotherDay back to form. Craig I never liked in any suit. Always ended up looking like the henchman.

Interesting video. I enjoyed your content, except the discussion regarding Roger Moore. The worst Bond of all. He should have stared in comedy and not in action movies. All of my friends who are Bond fanatics have the same opinion. Why he was in so many movies as Bond, I’ll never know. Totally untrue to the character Fleming created. Don’t bring the character of Saint, that he played, into Bond. I enjoy your channel very much, until you talk about bloody Moore.

Interested to know what generation you and your friends are, because back in the 70's and 80's Roger Moore was massively popular as Bond. So much so, that fans weren't initially happy when Dalton took over the role from him (honestly!). Agree that poor old Roger wasn't cut out for Bond in the later movies due to his age, but he had a certain charm and charism that made his portrayal so great. if you check out Calvin Dyson's James Bond channel, he is a hardcore James Bond fan from the Brosnan generation, yet Moore is his favourite Bond actor. It's all subjective I suppose!

@@SirHilaryManfatI grew up with Bond right from Connery’s Dr No. I was totally taken in by the character. So much, in fact, that I purchased and read all of Ian Fleming’s books. Roger Moore is a great actor. I can’t take that away from him, but he is no Bond. Most people who liked Roger Moore, and I will go out on a limb here, never read the books. Case in point. One of my cousins thought Moore was the best Bond. Did he read any of Fleming’s books? No! Another cousin of mine. Totally disliked Moore as Bond. Did he read any of Fleming’s books? Yes, and like me, all of them. Unless one knows the character that Fleming portrayed, really can’t pass correct judgment as to who is the best Bond actor. For me, and all that I personally know of that knows the character from Fleming’s books, feel as I do. I’m fine with those who think Moore did a fine job, that’s OK. But if you are a true Bond fan who knows and understands the character, in all honesty can’t accept RM as Bond.
