Very few understand the most tools make SAE fittings, that is US vehicles and some Japanese ones. All European vehicles have ISO/DIN fittings with flat back and domed fronts. IT IS IMPORTANT to use the correct ones they are different in design. The tool used here is the SAE one that is commonly made in China and sold here on online .

Nice video. Worth mentioning operation 1 or OP1 on the tool does not do a "single flare" as you say. It's a bubble flare. I only bring it up as a single flair is a single walled female end that's only used on low pressure lines, not brakes.

Had a real awkward pipe to replace, seen this video yesterday am, ordered the kit from Amazon prime which arrived 26 hours later (33 quid! - at local auto store 69 for same thing!) vehicle back on the road after an awkward join which would not have been possible with an inferior version. Excellent video, thank you Rick.

When I was a kid my uncle had one of the "basic" sets (made by Snap-On) that did good flares. Fast forward 45 years and the current tools are terrible! I'm in the market for a flare tool or a kit and found this video useful. Always remember to put the nut on the line before you do the flare. It is very hard to get it on afterward! Ask me how I know!!

Hi Rick nicely presented video, but although you've added in the comments the advisory regarding SAE and ISO/DIN, editing in a piece to camera or a screen cation would help clear up any confusion.

I got an El Cheapo version of one of these from amazon, amazed at how well it worked and was easy to do it while on the vehicle. The one I got some of my flares didn't look absolutely perfect but I noticed that since I was using 98% copper it was fine. The cat that I came with gave me a little thing of Grease and it said to apply grease to the end of the die every time you screwed it in. I noticed yours didn't have grease but the grease would probably be a great idea as it will keep the die from wearing as fast

Excellent Video, Well explained not over complicated, Regretfully i wasted £20 on the A frame type, looks impressive tool, but only ok if one dont mind making several attempts at a flare, saw your video, bought the Blackline tool, tried it straight away when it arrived, amazing a perfect flare first time so easy, your video is certainly spot on, great stuff.

I'll be getting me both sizes of these. I've got several of the other ones and none of them do good unless you reposition the cone over and over so they don't mess up your flare. More on vehicle friendly and would help save a man's sanity as well. 😆

Thanks for the demo . I believe you are in the UK . Check out Steve on the Simply Diagnostics channel . I think the line you have is NI COP . Which is an alloy of about 10% Nickel and 90% Copper . There is also a small amount of steel . The Nickel gives it the corrosion resistance . Some parts stores loan that cheap tool for free . I still would not use it . In the USA , the older cars used a 45° double flare . I think many newer cars are using the bubble flair . My older cars from the 1980's have the older double flare . I saw a demo where the handle was removed and it was held in a tight spot with a 1" wrench . I think that is 25.4 MM - I don't know if there is a " spanner " in that metric size . Several companies sell that tool . I will get the one that does both flare types . I believe the line should be deburred after it is cut .

At 9:57 he is 100% right that first kit is 100% garbage! You can rent it for free at pretty much any auto parts store in the US and I spent about seven hours (I am extremely mechanically inclined that’s why I’m changing my own brakes) in two days trying to get the thing to work and it just doesn’t. Every time I used a brake line with it it failed and I watched around seven different videos to try to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I finally just gave up and figured I’ll just go to a garage and pay them do it. However after watching this video I know which one to buy . It may work if you’re using that copper alloy(may work better)but I’m using 1/4 steel. Thanks!

I recently bought the first type and I found it difficult to use getting everything in line to get a clean flare, not only that the clamping damaged the pipe with ridges. That kit will now probably rest in piece in my shed, I in all honesty couldn't sell it on and not being too expensive not worth chasing a refund. I have now bought one similar to the second one and will now try to get my job done.

I had one of those Sealey type tools, utter nightmare. I re-braked a Series 3 Land Rover with one and it was an exercise in frustration and anger. Got it done but it took many hours. I bought the DIN and SAE Black Line type ones made by Franklin and the other by Trident. Both Made in Britain. Brilliant piece of kit. Highly recommended. Had my Defender rear brakes done in about 45 mins.

I think you used the wrong flaring tool on the steel line. If it was a metric fitting you should of used the DIN flaring tool and not the SAE flaring tool. The DIN has a flat base under the single bubble and not a flared one as shown at 7:31 as you can see it's standing proud of the fitting and not flat. You might get away with a making that mistake with a copper pipe tho you run the risk of closing up the center of the tube as its softer but you should use the correct tool on a steel pipe.

They have been selling that split wing nut type for 50 year's ! plus it is garbage the die have undersize steams and never from day one will do the job right . Eye believe that it's intentional the industry does not diy to fix there own brake lines. Bought 2 different one's there all the same garbage. Just end up going with premade sections and trimming off the extra in 3/16 than cut a section of 1/4 about 1 inch long and make a slip coupling and brazen it like a refrigent joint rock solid with brass rod . Of course this was a lot of year's ago the special hydraulic tool was not somthing you could get easily get nor did any one offer a simple tool that could do it right. After looking at the premade line's you could tell somthing hydraulic and precise made the flare. That split wing nut tool went across the shop at 100 mph against the wall !!!
