Yet another useful, clear and fact based article on a very important part of our bicycles. Thanks, Relja P.S. If ever there was a word that was useless in an industry it would have to be "standard" for bicycles. 🤣

I agree - the word "standard" in the cycling industry is getting closer and closer to becoming meaningless.

Good stuff thanks! I am now wondering if it would be possible to change a bike with external bearing cups from 1 1/8 quill stem to 1 1/8 threadless stem by changing the bearing cups to suit? I guess if the headtube inner diameter is the same... it could work. If so, it would be a better option thatn using a quill-to-threadless stem converter.

A good question. I've just answered it on the forum: www.bikegremlin.net/threads/can-i-swap-threaded-1-1-8-fork-for-a-threadless-one.359/ Relja

Great video! Too bad I had to do this research myself a few months ago:/. On measuring inner diameter with this tool, I was able to do it by extending tool until I couldn't wiggle it side to side.

Yes - you can do it that way, and get accurate-enough, it works. I'm curious if your reasearch showed any of BikeGremlin articles explaining this? (years ago I published articles showing what and how to measure, explaining the "standards" etc.) I'm asking because it seems to me that BikeGremlin articles are practically gone from Google search results. @@BikeGremlinUS I don't think I saw any. I wasn't aware of BikeGremlin back then. And I was searching both English and Polish (my native language). I started little hobby project to learn about bicycle mechanics late in 2023, upgrading everything in my old ebike leaving only frame and battery. I was hoping to finish it by spring 2024. Funny thing, things are a lot more complicated than I thought at that time. I still have few things to do and there is nipple inside of one of rims. When I'll have some free time I'll be setting up hydraulic brakes. I'll definitely start with BikeGremlin forum when researching as I see now that I took some not so wise decisions...
