When installing the crown race, I prefer to gently place the tool onto the race and then invert the whole assembly to strike the top of the tool onto a hard surface like a concrete floor. I've seen several different methods, but this one works for me. I have to give credit to a fella in Minnesota, USA. Gringineer Cycles.

Till this very day, I have a mountain bike I got... 10 years ago, whose front fork has an obvious play. One of the bearing races is not pushed all the way through. I guess the guy who put the bike together didn't have the proper tool or couldn't care less about it.
