Thank you for being you on here.since I changed my bottom bracket my chainrings seem to rub and go in and out when I’m turning the pedals. Not sure why, could I have a crossed thread. I’ve got a fake SRAM BB GXP nine speed. I will had a go at indexing the rear as I have had some slipping as well. I used your ball bearing servicing video which is when I first came across your channel. I would have commented on that but you have pushed the comments. I appreciate your thorough and methodical approach.

Thank you for the kind words. Glad to hear the videos helped. :) P.S. KZbin is poor at handling comments, so I've built a forum for questions and answers: www.bikegremlin.net/ It has better spam protection, and more reliable notifications for any new comments or replies. Relja

Loved the video. I think you are funny without even trying. Very useful information,.

I have mountted the gear cable at the wrong side of the fastening screw at the derailleur once, making the derailleur move too fast because the arm was effectively shortened. I took some time finding that one out.

The other problem that might prevent you from tuning the derailleur is that it's mounted differently. Some Shimano derailleurs kind of go deeper than the hook, and others go on top of the hook in line with it. This difference may make the derailleur unable to access the largest gear no matter the tuning.

I would very much like to know where I can purchase the tool you showed and used for making the cable housing ends centered on the inside. It was a yellow tool with a pokey on the end

Aging derailleur hangers made of aluminum can be returned to new condition (once carefully straightened) by carefully heating enough for any work hardening to be relaxed, without heating so much that the metal flows or slumps. Standard engineering tables offer temp ranges for most metals. This won't fix cracks, but may help remaining metal soften enough so any cracks don't spread as fast. Talented welders can fix cracks, though reshaping where any weld metal affects function is filed or ground back to original hanger shape. My treasured MTB is just over 20 years old, and a new hanger probably won't be found.

New hangers are a problem even for new(er) bikes. It's crazy - the amount of needless slight differences that manufacturers make even between their own models, just enough to make it not fit - not enough to make any reasonable technical difference. Relja

If you have access to Amazon there’s sites that sell hangers. They have about 100 different sizes so you might find it there

Brilliant video, and brilliant English. You could practice "thing" instead of "ting" by brushing your tongue against your top teeth. Your vocabulary is so good that it sounds like you are a British person putting on a Eastern European accent. Dérailleur hangers are a way for bike manufacturers to make money, selling something that costs a dollar or less to make, for 20 dollars. Fortunately they are available from aliexpress at about 5USD, but not for all bikes. I bet there are other problems with gear changing though. Worn cassette and worn chainrings. Frame flex. Old grease in the brifters (brake shifters) which hardens and makes shifting difficult.

I agree - hangers are a practical thing, but the regular price is usually a ripoff. Good points on the cassette and chain wear, as well as on shifters. KZbin won't allow editing of the published/uploaded videos, but it's worth making a new one explaining that. As for the English - thank you. :) I read a lot, and I prefer reading UK and US authors in their native (things get lost in translation). That takes care of the vocabulary. My pronunciation was getting worse and worse since I had stopped actively learning English (past my teens) - KZbin in English is a great way to practice it (and get some constructive feedback :) ).

@@BikeGremlinUS I had another listen to your video pronunciation. Your English really is excellent. The "th" is "the" too are sounding like "de." You seem to add an extra vowel into "have" make it sound like "hyave." And the vowel in "put" which should be a shwa Ə (almost like "pt") sounds a bit longer sort of poot or pute or something but the differences is very minor.

Thanks for the tips - much appreciated. :) My native dialect in the part of Serbia where I live (Vojvodina) is different compared to the rest of Serbia. We draaaaag out our voweeeeeels quite a bit. :) I suppose that too plays a part to a degree. There's a joke about a Vojvodinian having a parachute crash because he was told to count to ten, then pull the lever, and he was counting "oooooneeeee... twoooooo..." :) This is what my native sounds like (just for laughs): kzbin.info/www/bejne/boHKZaqpmr6lg6c I suppose practicing with a teacher and getting corrected is the way to go for further improvement. Having said that, another thing is that I don't read off a paper. Nor practice with a script. I think and plan what I wish to show and explain, but I don't practice any lines, just keep in mind what I plan. So showing things, along with thinking how to express what I mean at the same time, makes it a bit extra difficult to concentrate on pronunciation. What I've noticed is that I can give the same explanation in my native with fewer words, yet even more clearly, compared to English. Still, in spite of that, I prefer running without a script since that is a better practice in thinking and talking in English - at the cost of more mistakes and a bit longer explanations.

@@BikeGremlinUS Very good idea I think. My students all want to read from a script but as a consequence they never reach fluency. Your English is fluent. The pronunciation is cosmetic. Vojvodinian sounds a bit like a cross between Russian and Italian. I will take the liberty of using that video in my English classes to have students practice speaking nonsense. I find that speaking nonsense is the most difficult thing. If one can speak nonsense, then speaking a foreign language gets a lot easier. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmPQemOOa9VjbdE The quality of the mimicry does not really matter. Great explanations.. i have a question though. If i currently have a 2x7 setup, can i keep my current fd and upgrade to 9speed?
@BikeGremlinUS
@BikeGremlinUS 2 жыл бұрын
A 7-speed FD (and chainrings for that matter) won't mind having a 9-speed chain - it should be fine. If replacing the front chainrings (usually by getting new cranks) as well, make sure the existing FD matches the largest chainring. This article explains it - the link should lead directly to the picture that's relevant for what I'm explaining here: bike.bikegremlin.com/1297/bicycle-front-derailleur-compatibility/#3 Having said that, 3x7 offers a lot of gearing range on a budget, while switching to 2x9 from 2x7 isn't what I would consider an upgrade. I discussed that in a bit more detail in this article: bike.bikegremlin.com/122/how-many-speeds/
